What an amazing hidden gem this is, way off the beaten path in America! On the edge of nothingness…read morein tiny Organ, New Mexico, you aren't far from Las Cruces. But it's also the final stop on eastbound Highway 70 before emptiness, the longest span on one of America's longest roads without any population (48 miles of nothing). Exiting the highway here gives travelers one last point of interest before making the lonely drive to White Sands National Park. And what a worthy stop this is! Driving up a narrow road between weeds and brush, you might wonder if the place is abandoned. And judging by the name, you'd think Space Murals Museum was a tribute to artwork. Nope, that's just a reference to the painted water tower that started the whole journey in 1990. After painting several pictorials of space accomplishments on the tower, so many passersby were interested in this quirky stop that they walked around the tower looking for an entrance. But it only held water. This wasn't a museum. So the owner decided to give the people what they wanted, opening a small museum in 1992. Today, it's blossomed into a multi-room collection of NASA-donated space memorabilia and collectors' contributions. These aren't murals. They're relics of space travel! Highlights include the actual fuel tank that allowed the Apollo 11 Lunar Module to detach and land on the moon! You'll also find leftover astronaut food from a Space Shuttle mission and an early model of the space capsule that allowed John Glenn to become the first American to orbit the Earth. NASA even donated the original model for the space station to the museum, making quite the centerpiece! There are so many amazing space relics to see here, so don't let the name fool you! They also have an outdoor display and a nice little gift shop. It's a wonderful museum. And boy do I love a good freeze-dried mint chocolate chip ice cream sandwich!

It's dog friendly and the volunteer working when we visited was quite gregarious and offered our dog some treats that she makes herself to bring in for the pups that visit. Our dog is very picky so she didn't eat it, but it was very sweet and thoughtful. You could tell that the volunteer genuinely loves the museum and was super excited to have visitors to share it with. She chatted with us quite a bit and it was almost like a personal tour where she was giving us information on everything inside. During our visit only one other couple stopped in, they had a dog also, and she was just as warm and friendly to them. It's nice to hear stories from someone who really cares about the history and is clearly knowledgeable. For me, the highlight was getting to touch things that had been on the moon and returned to Earth. How many people can say they have touched something that has been on the moon? My husband thought seeing all the old astronauts food in toothpaste styled tubes was interesting. There's something about vintage space travel that's kind of fascinating and almost funny; it's interesting to see how far we've come. The murals were fine, but the museum and artifacts were probably more enjoyable to me personally. It's not a huge place but there's definitely a lot to see. We got a souvenir coin on our way out which serves as a nice little memento. It's definitely worth stopping in even if you just have a mild interest in space because the price of admission can't be beat, it's free!!

We first found them while visiting Rock Hound State Park which is located just a few miles from the museum. We stopped that first day and learned so much. Now we always stop each time our road trip offers the chance. We drop in for a visit and usually find another fine piece for my personal collection. We did some shopping and came away with six different chile powders, ranging from mild to extra extra hot, as well as green chile salsa and a large assortment of gifts for relatives. The famous and tasty Hatch Chile must be grown in Hatch or it's not the same. Laws require proper labeling! It was developed by Fabián Garcia at the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, now known as the New Mexico State University, in 1894. The town is tiny with a few small restaurants and plenty of chiles for sale along with chile art, chile sculptures, chile magnets, chile anything you can think of! Life is better with tasty Hatch chiles!

2026 Bataan Memorial Death March!…read more This event is very challenging yet rewarding. For 2026, the course was reduced to 15.6 miles due to the unseasonably hot temperatures. Even with the distance reduction, the course was difficult when you add in the heat, the sandpit, and the lack of shade. I finished the course before lunch - but it left me a little sore today. I can't wait to do it again next year! To all the other participants - I hope you had fun. To the staff and volunteers - thank you for a top notch event!

From a spectators perspective, the Memorial Bataan Death March in New Mexico is executed well…read more Enough so, that I don't mind going every year, spending the night, and hanging out at White Sands all day (normally I wouldn't want to be at White Sands because there really isn't anything to do, but during the MBDM, there's a lot more going on). Packet pick up is always the day before and some people camp out. We decided to camp out this year and I definitely recommend doing so if you're more than thirty minutes away because waking up super early the day of and then trying to find parking before the event is no fun. Camping, however, is fun. They allow tens and RVs (bring a generator though) and there is no fee to camp. There are a lot of grassy areas with tall trees and shade to choose from and there's a playground for the kiddos. During packet pick up and at the finishers area, there are different booths around. Cool to check out, you'll go home with at least a few free shirts or pens. Every year we make a stop at this one booth during pick up that will frame your participation medal along with a MBDM commemorative medal. This year since we camped out, we went to the pasta dinner the night before. It was buffet style... not a ton of options, but still enjoyable. They had two different types of pasta, penne and spaghetti, two different sauces, alfredo and marinara, garlic bread, and a salad bar. Just a nice environment to talk to friends and meet new people. They have a few other pre-event festivities so you just have to take a look at the schedule. I'm sure we'll be coming to this event year after year and who knows... maybe one year I'll actually participate (that Southwest sun is not my friend though, so it would have to be a super gloomy day). The MBDM is organized well and it seems like they're starting to add more activities for both the participants and the spectators.

Nice open space for events in Cruces…read more It is nice open area with tapestries in the center. It even has a sun dial in the center. I practically missed it because it was impressed by the design in and of itself. The place is already set up for Christmas, but I wasn't sure if they had done a Christmas tree lighting yet. In the daytime, with the blue sky above, the tree looked beautiful though. I like that there is plenty of seating around the plaza, both covered and uncovered. The plaza is within walking distance of several eateries, casual and fine dining, and the historic Rio Grande Theater. I would like to return for the seasonal special events for sure.

They have so many shops including this heavily recommended bookstore that my husband likes called Coas Bookstore. They say once you enter in that bookstore, it's hard to walk out and you will get lost. It's like a maze! The Plaza is very clean with decent parking and has excellent food and even the public is friendly and approachable. The tiles of the sidewalks are detailed and every shop is decorated for the holidays.

Today,Monday, called again and was told it was still in "teardown" with no completion time estimate. when I asked why it was taking so long I was given the excuse that they had many vehicles in their work schedule and didn't have enough people to do the work.
