The ranch offers great places for photographs with the backdrop of greenery, a rarity in the desert landscape of Phoenix. There are arboretums, trellis with gorgeous vines, park benches, quaint historical buildings that suit a photoshoot. Parking is nearby albeit it is hidden. Turn south on 51st from Northern. Watch carefully for the sign next to the Walgreens parking lot that says in fine print: Manistee Ranch Parking. For those in heels and finery, the grounds are small so there isn't a long walk to the great photo spots!

The garden is well maintained and organized, quiet place for give yourself quiet time and meditation. The garden is not that big place to walk around, but it's definitely worth it if you feel like need to escape and looking for nature therapy--this is the one! As someone who is typically more comfortable taking the photos than being in them, it was nice to see myself in a flattering light with no judgement but my own. On a moderate Phoenix day, one can stroll through the ancient dwelling spaces of a fascinating culture who started the canal systems we use today. It seems virtually impossible to think they made a go of this environment for so many years! It's incredibly fascinating to think of both the smarts and the physical endurance of these folks in constructing such a project. This is a must visit for anyone interested in the Valley of the Sun history, archaeology or just plain historical enjoyment. Take plenty of water.

My fiancé and I were put in a difficult situation when we had to let go of our previous…read morephotographer for our wedding just a couple months before the big event. We looked at several photographers and what felt like hundreds of galleries. When we were down to our final four, it was hard for us to make a firm decision, as we were cautious due to the previous bad experience that we had just gone through with the other photographer. Then my fiancé told me "so no to JoJo or did you like her stuff"? I was like. "Who is JoJo? I've never seen Jojo's photos". It gets a little confusing when you're looking at several images, to keep them all straight. Immediately after seeing Joanna's photos, our top 4 got tossed to the side and we knew at that moment we found our photographer :) We spoke on the phone with Joanna and she was super friendly and had answers to all of our questions, and had more to share with us that we didn't think of. We met Joanna at Knights Ferry for our engagement shoot, which is a must (very cool place that she suggested). Joanna was the sweetest person and, this time It felt to us like we were with a real professional. She was constantly helping us get into position, making sure hair wasn't in my fiancé's face. Making sure the lighting was just right before snapping shots. She was in her element, and we couldn't be happier with how this session went! After we parted ways. We were biting our nails waiting to see what we would get in our gallery (after the last disaster with the previous photographer) lol but when that email hit, we stopped what we were doing and went through every image and a huge weight was lifted. We were given the most beautiful pictures and couldn't be happier. We will FINALLY have good pictures of us hanging in our house that weren't taken from an iPhone lol. Being that I work in Parks and Recreation, whenever I visit a friend in another city, I always like…read moreto check out the local parks. So when I was visiting my friend in Phoenix, she wanted to take me to one of her favorites, Encanto Park. Of course, the name immediately made me think of the Disney movie, so naturally we played the Encanto soundtrack all the way there! Unfortunately, we picked a particularly brutal day to visit because it was a blistering 110° in Phoenix. Needless to say, our visit was a pretty quick lap around the park! It was beautiful and appeared to be fairly well maintained and clean. I was curious about why the water was SO green, though. I'm not sure if that's typical or just a result of the heat. There wasn't a whole lot happening while we were there, which wasn't surprising given the temperature. Even Enchanted Island, the amusement park attached to Encanto Park, wasn't open yet because of the heat. One thing I absolutely loved was the drum circle. I could have stood there and watched for quite a while, but we knew we couldn't stay outside for too long in that heat, so we moved along. Overall, the park looked beautifully maintained and fairly clean. I definitely think this would be a great place to hang out, explore, or spend the day on a much more reasonable-temperature day. I'd love to come back when it's not 110° because I have a feeling there's a lot more to experience here than we were able to see during our very hot and very quick visit!

A gem of a green space smack in the middle of central Phoenix -- where I least expected it. You have a number of paved walkways zigzagging through some very nice landscaping with lots of palm trees, an island and a bunch of picnic tables, and crossing over a number of canals and lakes. The class is quite long so be prepared - and eat before because I didn't and I was starving! There were about 12 people in my class so it does take some time since he helps each person find each thing on their prospective camera and everyone has different settings. I wasn't a beginner beginner taking this class (have already been shooting on Aperture priority) but it definitely helped me understand more about settings I was already using. This is a good class if you're brand new to a camera, but also if you've been shooting for a while but mostly on auto.
