Those preferring something of more substance must order it, retire to their table and then keep a eagle eye open for the number that has been assigned to them to be displayed high up in the garden and which indicates Come and get it. This procedure seems to be slightly complicated, but it frees up the beer garden staff for their key duties of dispensing ale to dehydrated punters, so let's stick with our priorities. One German reviewer notes that the seats are rustic and I must certainly agree and withdraw one star for that. Rather than bench seating, they give the impression of being vast sections of tree trunks which in places are at an angle of some 20 degrees off the perpendicular. Indeed, I am surprised that the usually vigilant German authorities permit an arrangement which could prove to be a health hazard to topers, be they sober or otherwise. Clearly a case for local specialists Thyssen Krupp to step in with some underpinning, piledrivers, or similar. The prices seem to be reasonably humane, given the apparently oligopolistic configuration of riverside watering-holes in Kaiserswerth and a view for which the Swiss would inevitable levy their characteristic surcharge. A cursory glance at the wall of the main building failed, however, to reveal a commemorative blue plaque stating that Florence Nightingale got lamped here in 1851.

You have to drive through small streets and there are no clear directions to get there. Parking space is limited especially if the weather is nice so keep this in mind if you want to go. The actual restaurant is really nice, they have a big outdoor seating area, modern, not your typical German "Biergarten" which are normally very simple and rustic. Service can be disappointing especially if it's packed. They just don't have enough servers to cover all the tables. We came here during the first sunny day in May already at noon time. The place was less than half occupied but we had to wait quite a bit before getting our order taken. Drinks wise they have a nice selection of wines by the glass as well as some good bottles. They even have some rare German pinots which are hard to find. If you like beer they have some nice ones on tab. Food wise you can choose between their main menu or go for their BBQ items or pizza. The BBQ items and pizza you can get at their self service counter. If you opt for the dishes from the menu you will be offered classic German fare with a modern touch and some Mediterranean dishes. I have to say that their kitchen is doing an excellent job, every dish I tasted was really good. If you like pizza, it is really good as well, thin enough and very crispy. Although the prices here are not cheap and service can be lousy I still like the Auermühle and will definitely return.

The menu is in German and English and try also have a children's menu. Our server was very nice. I ordered the Salmon which was excellent. My husband ordered the filet, Medium-well. It came out RARE! He sent it back and it came back medium. For 29€ I expected it cooked correctly, and since this is Germany, I was actually a bit shocked that it was undercooked, twice! We tried the dessert trio which was good. The chocolate mousse was the most flavorful. The creme brûlée had an inconsistent texture. I think we will give the place another try and hopefully next time it will be a better experience.
