My child took the required classes and training with Mr. Aoki. He communicates well with the parents and students. He gives them good pointers and driving tips to help them with their driving test. I recommend you tell Mr. Aoki where you plan on taking your driving test so he will help you. The classes are online which can be a downside because the breaks were short. There were times my child "wondered" off so I had tell them to wake up and focus. The second part of the course is the behind the wheel training. He took them to many places to practice driving. My child enjoyed this part very much. Overall, I would recommend this place. read more

Our grandson tried a DOE sponsored class but the instructor don't provide detailed online class info so grandson was blocked by instructor. Mr. Ron Aioki was a pleasure to work with as a parent and our twins did great at his driving school and both passed their driving tests the very first time. Mr.Aoki was very straight forward and helpful when it came to giving us tips. I passed my road test on the first try today, and the outcome would've never turned out that way if it wasn't for Mr.Aoki's tips. Who starts this first? Somebody flunked high school. Why didn't you complain about starting at exactly 7:45 and ending exactly at 2:15? You must be the one student that was falling asleep. Complaint: BAD MOUTH OTHERS 2. Bad mouth others...Ron is honest. Very Rarely complains about others Complaint: YELLS 3. Maybe a couple times. He is serious about his career! COMPLAINT: EXTRA FEES 4. My son missed the first hour and he stayed after an hour for free! I am in a wheelchair. He is very compassionate. COMPLANT: ON THE PHONE 5. On the phone...During video only. I agree with all the other people. 1. I took his class during my winter break and he only gives you 30 minutes for lunch. That includes buying your lunch, waiting for your take out lunch, and eating your lunch. 2. He talks bad about all the other instructors but he himself isn't good. He's been teaching for 20+ years but don't be fooled... HE CANNOT TEACH. He basically EXPECTS you to know all these terms and rules but when you don't understand, he doesn't teach and he blames your mistakes on you. 3. He says he NEVER yells but then he blames every mistake on you. Saying how its your fault for not accerlating fast enough, or how you can't see the parking stall. Instead of correcting and teaching you, he blames you and makes you feel really bad and makes you want to give up. 4. I text him a few days before that I cannot make a BTW lesson, and he charges me $53 dollars. No where in the class has he warned or told us that we will be fined for missing a lesson. All he wants is the damn money. He is a SCAM... I could go swearing. 5. He's constantly on the phone. Either texting or talking to other clients as if you weren't there. He doesn't respect his current students. 6. His BTW lessons are so wrecked. You have 5 lessons and he basically puts you on the freeway on the 3rd lesson no matter how much driving experience you have. FYI: the 3rd lesson can be in 1 or 1 1/2 weeks (not that much time) If you can't drive correctly, as I said before, he'll just blame it all on you and how crappy you are. In summary, he is the WORST. DON"T GO TO HIM. He praises himself but all his wants is the money in the end. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me... but this is my personal experience. I'm sorry Ron, you are a disgrace and no one should waste their time and money on you. You need to find another job. read more

Ron Aoki explains things well and makes things easier. He's very patient and explains things thoroughly when behind the wheel. As long as you listen and remember everything he says, you'll do well. Going to This Place for my Classroom & BTW Certificate during Covid-19 is one of the most memorable moments even if we did virtual classes. We call him Kumu which means teacher in Hawaiia and he teaches pidgin and tells really funny stories. But most importantly Kumu teaches the best techniques to new drivers or like me I did +40 hours for my log already and I learned about my bad habits just by learning his tricks and techniques. The one I like the most is the 3 Quarters Steering Technique because it's so smooth when you counter steer to make the wheels straight without time wasted. I really enjoyed my times behind the wheel along learning to drive with my partner. I think everyone who listens carefully and applies the techniques and awareness skills, and his number one priority is to look for pedestrians, he will help to ensure you don't get into any accidents or pedestrian hits. read more

The first review about the Hawaii Driving Institute was a bit harsh and most likely over exaggerated. Ron Aoki is a man of God and humbleness who doesn't insult or disdain others. I am a recent student of his, so I have experienced this first hand. He is not a joke, as said by the arrogant reviewer before me. He teaches teenagers how to drive and he does very well and excels in such a profession; to have the patience and self control to handle unappreciative and ignorant people/students (such as the reviewer before me who, I may assume, was once a student of his). Such a joke. On the first day, he was telling me how great he was and that he is the best in the island while saying nasty stuff about others. Their office is actually in downtown next to Honda. I didn't get receipt on my payments and the instructor named Ronald Aoki didn't give me receipts on any of my payments. He just asks for the money right after driving. He even told me I dint pay one time but I did. He was constantly on his phone while I was driving(first time). He was negotiating with new customers while on the road. He had too many excuses too. He had to cancel one of my trip because he said somebody banged his car and was talking to the police at that time. But the funny thing is he took the same car to my next schedule without any visible damage! On my supposed to be last day, we had to cancel because he said he would be in the other island during that day. I never got to learn how to park at all. And to add, while on the road with me, he told me he haven't renew his permit to teach yet. He was actually teaching with an expired license. $50/ 1.5 hour isn't worth it with this guy. ====== I ain't going to take back what I said because that's what I experienced. How can I be mistaken if I got your name right and when I said the location is next to honda, that's the honda in bishop street. It's that all glass on the corner. I totally agree with Chris M. I had an even worse experience at this driving school. This rating should actually be negative stars. First of all, this guy named Ronald Aoki does not have any special teaching skills or know how to teach. All he does is talk and joke about random stuff and he has absolutely no patience while I'm driving. At the end, he blamed everything on me for making mistakes which he never gave me any clear explanations. It was totally a waste of my valuable time and money. It was so obvious how much he sucked once I went to different driving school like right after. Unlike somewhere, I definetly learned the right skills from other institute more than enough to pass the driving test at once. AVOID THIS DRIVING SCHOOL !! read more

Ron Aoki is great teacher i strongly recommend him! He's very patient with you, he doesn't get angry or frustrated, and he explains things to you in different ways if you can't get it the first time. He is very dedicated to his job and to helping other people. Before i took his behind the wheel classes i was a very nervous driver, i sucked at driving and i wasnt confident at all. I highly recommend Ron Aoki as a driving instructor. I am an adult foreign driver and although I had taken some lessons in the UK I had not taken my driving test. I am not the most coordinated person and I was extremely nervous about driving on the different side of the road, under different road rules but I had no need to be worried, Ron was a wonderful teacher. Ron was incredibly patient and never once showed an ounce of frustration even when I made the same mistakes over and over again. He always explained things to me in a simple and logical way, and if I didn't get it the first (or second time) he would try to explain things in a different way until I finally got it. This was one of the things that most impressed me about Ron, he clearly puts a lot of thought and personal attention into each student and adapts his teaching methods to each individual. He carefully planned lessons that allowed me to practice things that I was struggling with in a variety of driving environments. This allowed me to gain invaluable driving experience of more difficult situations and really helped to boost my confidence. I would not hesitate to recommend Ron. Mr. Aoki was very friendly and made an effort to explain things in various ways in order to best fit the needs of every student. His classes were organized and he responded to all of my texts and calls promptly. When I first started driving I was very timid and I didn't enjoy it at all. But Mr. Aoki did a very good job of remaining calm throughout the behind the wheel sessions and making the process less stressful. He also gave really good tips throughout each class and an entire list of tips after completing the behind the wheel lessons just in case you were to forget. Overall, I learned a lot from his class and I was able to pass my road test on the first try. The Hawaii Driving Institute is definitely somewhere you want to check out if you'll be attempting to get your license anytime soon. read more

My son took Mr. Ron Aioki's driver's ed class over spring break 3/2018 (5 days, 6 hrs/day with about a 45 min lunch break). It's now 8/2018 and my son passed his driver's test on the first try in Kapolei! Yeah! I feel Mr. Ron went out of his way in communicating with my son via text during his behind the wheel lessons and also before and after his road test. He has been professional the whole time and educational materials were excellent for my son and for us as parents. Love the reminder handout on tips for the road test! The location of the school is very convenient to Hickam AFB and walking distance to several restaurants during the driver's ed class. Mr. Ron was always on time for class and behind the wheel lessons. My son said he is very informative in his lessons and has stories of other drivers that serve as good examples of driving rules to be obeyed, which made the lessons stick and mean something to my son. Ron is the best!!! He was the most patient, kind and caring instructor I could possibly have had. He enabled me to feel confident to ask any question if I was unsure. He never made me feel stupid when I made mistakes, which I did often... I really felt that it would take me a very long time to learn. Fortunately because Ron always encouraged me and assured me that I could do it, I picked it up in time to be prepared for my road test. He was always very prompt for my lessons and really happy to accommodate my driving lessons around my work schedule. I'm upset by the other low rated review as I had a completely different experience. The instructor has had over 15 years in the business and hands down allowed me to learn driving techniques safely and as clearly as possible. Having had already had a permit in the state of North Carolina, I had to redo drivers Ed here due to some of the minor changes in the rules. I can say my experience was much different and hands down think you won't find a better instructor on the island. read more
