My daughter came home happy to have learned so much and extremely more confident after her 2-hour lessons with Lenard. She decided to keep practicing with her permit and call for another 2-hour lesson before her driving test. Living in east Oahu costed an extra $20 which was no problem because we're limited on good driving instructors over here! $80/hour with 2-hour min + $20 travel fee. I should have look at the reviews In yelp before taking the adult program. This is my first time going on yelp to review. Not recommended for beginners. I took the adult driving program with instructor Lenard Wong. While he might be a good driver himself, he is not a good instructor for beginners. I would only recommend him to people who already know how to drive and just need a refresher. For first-time and nervous drivers like me, I highly discourage choosing him. Every time I made a mistake, he would scold, yell, or sigh. This made me incredibly anxious and unable to focus. To make matters worse, he barely explained the rules or how to use the car's mirrors, mechanisms, and other essential functions, nor did he give detailed tips on how to drive well. By the second lesson, he made me drive on the main streets without proper, detailed preparation. Yes I made a lot of mistakes but everyone makes mistake and has different pace. I am trying to learn and that is what I am paying for but with him I am barely learning to drive. tried wong way 2 different times the first time i had leonard and thought i was the problem because of my lack of experience and was critiqued heavily the second lesson its like he completely forgot what we worked on and i just thought its okay maybe i can just sharpen what i already know. tried again a couple weeks ago in hope for a different instructor but got the same guy and i told him im okay with my turns and just wanted to work on parallel parking. He proceeded to ask where i learned from and i said my friend and he told me that they didnt know what they were doing even though they have been driving for 6 years. and i had my road test and on the way he FELL ASLEEP but i wasnt gonna let that stop me. when we got there he wanted to get some practice in so we drove the kapolei route and when driving pass a cross walk i slowed down which he asked me why i did so, i couldnt give an answer at the time i just thought its was right and he said there was no reason to and low and behold that was something i got marked down for because i was supposed to slow down incase pedestrians wanted to walk. do not recommend if you guys get leonard im not sure about any other intructor apart of this company i have not been introduced to anyone new. read more

This review is in regard to Leonard. He was VERY unprofessional upon helping my niece. He was yelling at her, he was rude, and he was definitely taking advantage of her. He FELL ASLEEP on the wheel! And took her from Mililani to Kapolei to "feed his horses?!" We definitely called him and demanded a refund! $320 for 2 days just to fall asleep? And when we called him he said he had a "bad day". If you get Lenard, cancel. Based on my brother's and other reviewers' experiences, I do believe Matthew and Stephen Wong are excellent instructors. Lenard is clearly an experienced and strong driver, but his demeanor was very unpleasant and unfriendly. I don't need my instructor to be my best friend, but I do think they should at least be somewhat supportive, and like they genuinely want to help you get better. Definitely didn't get that vibe here. This is a review for Adult driving lessons with Lenard. He is not a bad person but he is unfortunately not a good teacher. Despite all the bad reviews about him I wanted to give him a chance. There might be a chance that people are review bombing him and maybe people are "Wong" about him. Well the people are right. Now I don't usually care when people yell at me or critique me when I'm trying to learn something. But there's a difference between yelling at someone to get a valuable point across and yelling out of frustration. This instructor is the latter. He is not a patient person and needlessly puts stress on people he is teaching. I have anxiety and panic attacks and when I told him that sometimes I get scared around cars he tells me to just deal with it. If you do have anxiety I highly suggest to not take an instructor who can't understand the debilitating effects of anxiety. And his lack of patience highly exasperate my stress. He does not positively reinforce good driving methods, behaviors, and techniques. During lesson I didn't know if I was doing something right. And everything I did felt wrong. The only conversation was him yelling at me when I did sonething wrong. I had to constantly ask him if this is right and he just sighs and mumbles. If you don't give positive feedback, how are you going to build a driver's confidence when they are driving? Lastly I decided to go to other driving instructors and see if I was a bad driver or not . And oh my what a difference! Lenard teaches a slightly unconventional and orthodox way of driving and other driving instructors told me to forget everything he taught me because it's an outdated and inflexible way of teaching. Many instructors were baffled at how I was driving with what he taught me. You can imagine how much of a setback this was because I practiced everything Lenard taught me and it was already in my muscle memory. I had to spend weeks forgetting what he "taught" me and build confidence driving. Again Lenard isn't a malicious person who is intentionally trying to bring you down. But it's arguably worse if he brings you down unintentionally. He can be professional and I do wish him the best. But he himself seem to not learn from all the feedbacks and criticism after all these years. He is just not good at teaching. I do not recommend taking driving lessons with Lenard. I took 2 classes with him in July and November 2021. I'm an adult with little to no driving experience and I communicated that to Lenard ahead of our first class. Yet for some reason, he expected me to know more than I did. In both of our classes, Lenard would be overly aggressive, yell and not offer constructive criticism when I made mistakes. He didn't seem self-aware that his irrational outbursts to my errors were distracting. I don't get the sense he has intentions to help new drivers build a sense of confidence and safety. Anytime I did something wrong, he would put his hand on his forehead and sigh loudly. There was one instance when I slowed down before making a right turn because a car across the way was making a left turn onto the same road I was heading. Lenard started yelling at me, asking why I'm slowing down and saying it's my right of way. I didn't know that, but that wasn't the right way to teach me in that moment. I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed and started to tear up. He didn't even coach me on how I could have done that better and just sent me a PDF after class. Honestly, from seeing all the great reviews I went to spend the extra money to have lessons from Wong Way Driving Academy. I paid for four lessons and rented the car for my drivers test. In total, I spent about $760 or more to learn how to drive on Oahu. I mentioned to my instructor that I came from a smaller island and I didn't know how to drive in the "city". Despite that, he would make (as other Yelpers have mentioned) aggressive outbursts and rude comments. It was discouraging to keep taking lessons but I thought that I might as well stick through it. My driving instructor also FELL ASLEEP while I was driving. I drove from Ala Moana area through Kalihi to the point where I noticed the monorail. I realized he was asleep and only reason I noticed that he was asleep was because I had to ask for directions back (since I'm not from here). He would also pressure me to make turns faster and yell at me for small things like double checking my left side. Crazy to think that I spent $140 to get yelled at for double checking my left while taking a right turn. I would say something like "It's just a habit for me to look down the lane when I'm making a turn." My instructor would reply aggressively asking why I would have to do that when I have the green light. I've almost been hit from someone running a red light with my previous instructor on a different island so I KNOW how important it is to double check the lanes (luckily my instructor back home was reactive and even honked at the person running the red light for me). My instructor back then didn't even get mad at me for that. In fact, he told me how it was the other persons fault and how it's important to double check for people running red lights. THAT'S how an instructor should teach their students. Although I hated driving with him, I give two stars because he was accommodating with my schedule. I still can't lie about how glad I was to have cancelled one of my appointments because I got constantly beaten down with snarky remarks. As a young adult, $760 is a lot to spend on driving lessons. I live on Oahu alone so I regret spending as much as I did here. My advice for any adult drivers looking to learn how to drive in Oahu is to find a friend to learn with instead. It really isn't worth it to spend over half a grand to get yelled at. Before you say, "It can't be that bad," check the reviews. In simplest terms, I felt finessed after reading all of the positive reviews. I don't think that I've ever felt more discouraged to drive but I guess that some people aren't meant to be teachers. read more

If you're assigned Lenard as your instructor, make sure you ask to switch, or find a new school. He literally wants his students to fail the driving exam and acts as if you've personally offended him by not knowing how to drive. He is rude, egotistical, unhelpful, snappy and impatient. He did not prepare me for my driving test at all and even insisted he's a "great instructor" after I failed. He will make you feel incompetent and uncomfortable while you are driving with his rude remarks and nonverbal aggression. Thanks to Lenard Wong, my son passed his road test on the first try! Lenard helped my young adult learn the rules of the road, as well as the tricks for passing the driving portion of the exam. While we live in Aiea, we registered to take the test in Waianae. Lenard took my son to the Waianae test location to familiarize him with the area and what to expect. Wong Way Driving was great. My son did the classroom and BTW driving. Mr Wong had excellent communication with my son(good coaching while driving) and myself scheduling the BTW sessions. My son passed on his first try at Koolau DMV. :) Advice for other parents, drive with your child at least 20-30 hours before the BTW session. It will make the BTW session much more effective. I started off with A One Driving School because they had a lot of good reviews, but quickly wondered if the reviews were authentic (I had a terrible experience) and switched to Wong Way. Benjamin at Wong Way was a life saver. He was so nice and helpful in all of our driving sessions (I believe I took about 5 sessions). On the day of my test, my CAR that I have been practicing in broke down (such luck!) and I was in a panic because I cannot reschedule the test date as I was leaving town and had a deadline in which I needed to get my license by. I called Benjamin while he was teaching another student, and he came straight to my rescue! I passed the test and now am a happy and safe licensed driver. My son started driving a little more on the roads this past summer. It took 3 of us to teach him all we knew how to drive. We thought to put him in a driving session/lesson to see what a professional driver instructor could do to help sharpen his driving skills. I sent a Direct Message through Instagram and I received a quick reply! We were connected with Lenard and scheduled his first session with him. He met us in Wahiawa and they drove around for an hour. After their session, Lenard said that Noah did well, and that he didn't need any more lessons...just that he needed to drive much more to get used to being on the roads and freeway. We all thought that the purpose of a driving school was to teach them how to drive and not expect a person to already know how to drive. I have a driving lesson with Lenard, I don't recommend him as your driving instructor. He was so impatient & not giving constructive criticism when you did something wrong. And at the very beginning, he doest even introduce himself. I greeted him in a positive manner, and he just look and greets in cold. And for the 2hrs I drive with him, he only teaches how to park near the curb, not even a parallel park. The rest he let me just drive. The whole driving was so awkward and silent. He doesn't give any tips or advices about driving. He ask me where I'm gonna take my road test, and I ask him what's the best location to take the road test, he just sarcastically laughs and didn't say anything about my concern. And the worst part, he SLEEPS. He just let me drive straight so he could sleep. And what I know is you supposed to know your student if she/he knows the place, familiar or new to them. He didn't get to ask me if I'm new here or how long I've been here. He expects me that I already know this place. I think he just takes advantage of me because I'm not really vocal to him and I'm a young woman. I just do what he says. I just let it go because he is old, but if you think you're too old to teach, just stop/retire, you're giving urself a hard time and the students because if your behavior towards your student. My husband and I had no time to teach our 18-year-old how to drive, so I did the super fun research on Yelp and found good reviews for Wong Way Driving Academy. I emailed them one night and in a couple of hours I received an email saying that I will be contacted in the morning and sure enough, I received a lengthy text with all the available dates they had for the next two weeks. The price they quoted was higher than the other places that I contacted, but 5 stars on Yelp has never failed me, so I took the plunge and scheduled 5 driving sessions with Wong Way. After I booked the dates, I decided to just scroll through the comments. I don't know why I didn't look at it BEFORE I booked the lessons for him, but I'll just blame it on the busy holiday season. I found out that he would be having lessons with Lenard. Imagine my disdain when I read the negative reviews about him. Well, I'm here to say that Lenard was (is) AWESOME. My usually cynical son thought he was great. And I'm happy to announce that he got his driver's license today on his first try! I would text Lenard, but I lost his number when I updated my phone, but Lenard, if you're reading this. THANK YOU so much for being such a good instructor and he went into his road-test with confidence and got his license on his first try! Long, long time ago, I was a poor college student who had no hopes of driving. I was traumatized from my previous driving instructor (more on that the end of this post), before I found this instructor. I was so lucky to find this instructor. He's super cool, cracks jokes, and teaches you easy methods that you'll remember for the rest of your life. Easy parallel parking? Check. Easily teach you ways to remember the safety rules of the road? Check. Drive you to the DMV, make sure you pass your test, and gives you a high five when you pass? Check. He expects you to already know everything about driving and if you're not already perfect he will be rude, sarcastic, and acts like a petty little teenager. Seems to feed his ego to set his students up for failure. First I'd like to point out that the driving school (classroom instruction for under 18 drivers) is different from the driving lessons, even though it is all under one company. Most of the rave reviews here are for the driving school. I will be reviewing the adult driving lesson, specifically taught by Lenard Wong.  I signed up for the adult lessons and was assigned Lenard as my instructor. Before my first lesson I had maybe driven for a total of 4 hours, so I was pretty new to driving. Although Lenard was aware of this, he scolded me every time I made a mistake. He would frequently sigh and give me attitude throughout the lesson. He was also the first one to bring me onto the freeway, during which I saw him not paying attention to my driving and looking on his phone. I had a total of 6 lessons with him and I left every time feeling less confident in my driving. I later had a session with another instructor who was much calmer, more instructive, and less abusive than Lenard. read more

March 10, 2023 I took a driving lesson with Lenard, and I implore that you consider looking for another instructor unless you enjoy aggressive remarks and nonverbal gestures that indicates his frustration if you are struggling to be more comfortable operating a vehicle and applying your understanding of the rules of the road on the actual road. Be ready for explicit indications of irritability if you make mistakes, a constant need to repeat the same phrase of action despite you attempting to perform what he asks of and snarky remarks when you ask him a question regarding to the rules of the road for clarification. Prior to me driving his vehicle for the lesson, he did an initial survey to comprehend how much experience I have with driving before my scheduled road test, and I explained to him promptly about the areas that I need the most work on. I took the minimum amount of behind the wheel hours that the business requires adults to pursue. His general comments of the road test were insightful as he highlights how the examiners will score the driver based on a point system that gets reduced if mistakes or failures occur during the session. I will acknowledge that he has helped me in areas of parallel parking and gave me a better understanding of what areas I need to work on if I hope to pass my road test, but in my own opinion, his demeanor outweighs the constructive areas of criticism and comes off as condescending, as if he expects someone paying for these lessons to know whole-heartedly the traffic rule and law as if we were textbooks ready to be referenced on demand. It is in this area where I find that taking a lesson with Lenard from this organization is of a paradox: How can a company such as this one - which promotes safe and defensive driving - retain an instructor that has questionable methods of teaching that instead further diminishes the confidence level of a client who may need more assistance for their road test or familiarity operating a vehicle? Before you pursue an adult behind the wheel lesson with Lenard, please consider reading the reviews of him on this platform and make an informed decision with the information that is written by those who have had near similar experiences to mine. I am sure Lenard's method of instruction is not ill-intentioned, but I do sense that his sense of navigation for instructing students is authoritative, sandwiched with small complements to lay out the terrain of encouragement. At the end of the lesson, I drove myself home from Kapolei and left the vehicle feeling ashamed and belittled rather than encouraged and humbled to understand the plans I need to work on if I want to pass my road test. What disgusted me from this experience was his racially ambiguous comment about Native Hawaiians as I was heading home, making a statement that once I obtain my license, I can "speed like the rest of them". This places a bad taste in my mouth as it demonstrates how comfortable he is to talk about groups of people with prejudice. Personally, I would not schedule another lesson with the instructor and my review is in no attempt to defame or tarnish the business he represents, for many of the youth enrolled in this academy have been successful in their lessons both in class and behind the wheel from other instructors and their reputability producing great results. The furthest we went was to Kapolei. In terms of scheduling, communication needs more improvement as I have experienced delays in responses from him. My initial lesson was cancelled because I was sick and told him that I would reach out as soon as possible when things also calm down for me as I have other responsibilities I must cater to. Thus, I do not appreciate being yelled at or feeling insignificant when I am doing my best to learn from a person who claims to be a professional with their x years of experience in this line of work. Steve Wong and the Wong Way Driving Academy gets 5 Stars from me. Not Just 5 Stars... BUT FIVE GOLDEN Stars ! Last September my daughter had a brief window of time, in between school schedules, where we could focus on her driving. I had started her out driving, first in a parking lot and then on the local side streets. To be honest, I didn't think she was the most skilled or confident driver and she sometimes made me pretty nervous. Clearly time for a professional instructor to take her to the next level and get her ready for the road test. So I emailed several driving schools and Steve Wong responded and we set up a time for an evaluation sort of lesson. Flexibility: He worked with us on scheduling and was even willing to come over to Kaneohe. Email seemed to work out well for both of us. I think this allows him to work out a plan for efficient use of his time and ours. Plus you don't have to play phone tag. He can't answer the phone instantly anyway as he is booked with classes and road instruction during most of the day. Four short lessons later he pronounced her ready for the road test. Need A good driving school to teach my wife how to parallel park and to take her road test in. Read all the good reviews on Wong Way Driving School so decided to call. Voice mail asks potential customers to leave message or text would be better. I did both waited over 3 hours still no response back or text? I run a family business here on Oahu we always answer voice mails- texts and email inquiries. I think it's rude and bad business to ignore potential clients!
