Even if you do have your ppl I highly recommend taking him up with you anyways. He's a great guide and knows the island to the T. There are some sketchy parts and I was glad Mike was right seat. We loved the surf class so much we brought friends with us this time. We signed three 11 year old kids up for a semi-private class. We were texted the night before the class and asked if we could move our 9:00 am class to 11:30 am. I said sure, no problem. The next day, we had one kid drop out. We had a new instructor. He was nice but didn't prep the kids for surfing (irresponsible). After an hour and a half, the instructor brought the kids back and said the office should have contacted me about the new class time. Classes are no longer two hours, the new times will be reflected on the website. I called the office for a week, no one answered and the voicemail was full. No one responded to my email and I texted the number that texted me for the time change with no luck. The website says a TWO HOUR surf lesson, it has not changed. I feel cheated and no one has contacted me.

Ehukai and Hanalei were great with our kids (ages 9 and 3). They were so patient, encouraging, fun, and clearly love what they do. I even joined one of the lessons myself, and I was so impressed with how well they adapted their instruction to all of our different ages and experience levels. Our 9-year-old son had never surfed before, but in his very first lesson he was standing up and riding waves! Now he's totally hooked. Our daughter who just turned 3 also had lessons with both Hanalei and Ehukai -- she was all thumbs up and big smiles the whole time while tandem surfing with them! It was such a special, exciting experience for our kids and one we'll never forget. Not only were Hana and Ehu there to teach technique but they're also there to safely guide through the waves, currents, and other surfers. It was so nice to have that peace of mind. If you want to surf and are considering having lessons -- do it! I can't recommend Kona Kai Surf enough. Hanalei and Ehukai are outstanding instructors, wonderful with all ages, and are genuinely kind people. They gave our family awesome memories we'll cherish for years to come. Mahalo, Hana and Ehu! I originally had a reservation for a Sunday afternoon at 1:30 pm but the employee was honest and said the water was really choppy and it wouldn't be fun or easy to get to the Captain Cook Monument. Recommended I come back the next day day so I did and was so glad! I rented a double kayak and was able to pay card upon arrival. Came out to just under $63 for a rental I could've used all day. They opened at 7 am and we got out on the water by 7:30 am. The bay was like a lake that Monday morning. Bay Side Kayak lent us a large water bag that kept our belongings dry and safe. Would use this company again!

According to a local I talked to there are a lot of fly by night kayak rental places that are not permitted and technically illegal.
