Why review a grocery store? Good question. But a review can help Yelpers find the hidden gem of a…read morebusiness in a new city of any size. So here goes! Fareway Stores are a mid-sized grocery. Not the choices of a Kroger, Hy Vee, Walmart or Target Super Store, but they have a selection to meet most needs. What sets this chain apart then? A number of things. First, Fareway is known for their meat department. They staff the department with a number of butchers (never one or two. Think 4-5!). When I walk up to the butcher case I am often asked about what I'd like before I have had time to decide. They gladly cut what you want from a larger piece, e.g. "I'd like a 4 lb. prime rib roast." You'll get it. Along with the standards of pork, beef and chicken, there is a fine selection of ready to cook meat dishes (stuffed chicken breast, shiskabobs, etc) and a number of deli items. You won't find that case stocked with prepackaged ground beef, pork items, etc. This is an entire department that rivals the small premium meat counter at a large store. Secondly, Fareway is s student-friendly employer. They hire many young people and are accommodating to the high school student's active schedule. Great community orientation. This leads to a third quality. The many employees do more than stock shelves and check out customers. This store still provides carry out service for nearly every customer. If you have a small bag, you are probably fine carrying your own. But for that cart of groceries--carry out assistance every time. And no carts are left in the parking lot. That young person rolls it back into the store. And while it would be nice for the carry out employees, no tipping. If you find a Fareway Store in your community, give them a try if you haven't already.

Honestly, it's a divey place with divey neighborhood people but we like it. (Example: The guy in line behind you may be a little buzzed, but he'd definitely help ya if you're short some change or your car gets stuck in the snow.) The people who work here are characters to say the least. As we've come to know them, they've grown on us but you never know what you're gonna get that day. People steal from them constantly so prices are a little high on some things to compensate. Sometimes the gas pumps don't work? Basically, it looks sketchy but you'd be fine to stop here and get what you need.

If you don't follow public safety regulations, you don't get my business. I left the above as a review on their Facebook page. They replied back with some lame excuse about being a distributor, and their employees used to working only with each other most of the time. But they ARE a business with a store that is open to the public, so that's a pretty weak excuse. Then they disabled reviews from appearing on their Facebook page because they apparently can't handle one legitimate negative review (all previous reviews were positve). I used to shop there on a fairly regular basis pre-pandemic, and I liked the ability to shop local with such a good selection. But no more. I'll gladly spend my money at a large chain store like Hy-Vee instead as they follow proper pandemic guidelines.

The gas station attendant was kind and helpful. I liked the layout of inside the store (way better than the gas station that resided here before). Overall, pretty good experience!
