I lived at Hawthorne at Southside for 8 years and they were one of the best landlords I have ever had. My Girlfriend was hit by a car as a pedestrian at 45 miles an hour and suffered a catastrophic brain injury. The manager and office personnel went way out of their way to accommodate us when It was decided that home care was her best option. They worked quickly to accommodate us with a handy cap / wheelchair accessible apartment and were even willing to allow modifications to the apartment that were needed to tend to her complicated medical requirements. They even helped spreading the word about fundraisers. This is a great place to live. If you pay your rent on time and do not go out of your way to cause problems in the common areas then you will not regret living here. The other thing of note is the maintenance crew. I have been to this location many times doing chair massages for their residents. All of the staff members are fantastic! Clubhouse is beautiful. They have a ton of activities and amenities for the residents to enjoy. If you are looking for a place to call home, I highly recommend checking them out. read more

My husband and I were moving to Asheville and had spent a few weeks chatting with the leasing office here. We were super excited about a few of the units and even went as far to create accounts on their portal and submit applications for a few of them (per the guidance of the people helping us from the leasing office). The person we were talking to said we would be first on the wait list and that we would hear back either way about if a unit opened up - we were told it was highly likely because we were inquiring 4 months in advance. I cannot stress enough - we spent probably two weeks working with the leasing office directly, chatting with them about our move, getting dimensions on the units, getting virtual tours, etc - and then once we finally pulled the trigger and "applied" online (and paid a $300 deposit) we never heard from them again. Never. Not one time. Nothing about us being "#1 on the wait list!!!", no updates about our applications (were they approved or not..?), no next steps. Not even automated emails from the portal or check-in emails / calls from them directly. Literally nothing. I'm not at all insinuating that this was a scam and I don't feel like they stole from me -- I really just think this place is very disorganized and a lot falls through the cracks. Thankfully we were able to buy a house and aren't needing the unit we apparently were "next in line for" anymore - but if you're considering moving here I would be aware of all communications and make sure you stay on management if you want something done. read more

Our lease was up one week after hurricane Helene hit. We were hoping for more time to get our bearings straight as some utilities were slowly coming back on and road closures complicated our moving plans. We felt there could have been more understanding to not pressure us to move out right away. Phone lines and Internet were still down during this time so communication with this office was minimal yet they had no problem putting on the pressure for us to get out of there. If it were legal to do so at that time we would have gotten evicted for staying an additional week. We were charged for that week so we only got a dollar back from our security deposit. At a time where we really needed that money. If you move here and something out of your control happens be prepared for minimal workability with this company. read more

Reposting after they removed my review.... They are by far the worse place to live. Never In my life have I been treated so much like garbage than from this complex. There are plenty of other better places to live than any of the hawthorn complex's. When we first came to look the apartments, the ones that they were showing us looked amazing! We signed the papers and got ready to move in. When we moved in, the apartment that they gave us looked nothing like the ones that we had been showed. Plus it had dozens of Issues throughout the entire apartment. The apartment was also not properly cleaned when we moved in. We found multiple messes everywhere. I wrote everything wrong down on a piece of paper and gave it to them as well as calling and letting them know about these issues multiple times and they never got fixed. They have lied to us on multiple occasions. They will not fix basic problems like paint pealing from the walls and ceiling plus the mold in different areas of the house. Not to mention the police are here at least once a week. There are drugs and alcohol all over this apartment complex and the staff do absolutely nothing to control it. The staff are rude and absolutely terrible people. We also have had personal belongings stolen from both residence and staff. Sadly we have nothing to prove it. Not worth the $1600 a month that we pay and we are looking forward to moving. We have lived here for a year and the only reason why we have not moved yet is because we are under contract to stay for a year. This is one of the worst places I have ever lived in my life. I would not even live here if it was free. Whatever you do do not get a hawthorn apartment!!!! read more

I went on a tour with some friend's apartment shopping and Sarah Worley was our guide. She was so amazing. She answered all questions that any of us had. She also made the tours extremely personal and lots of fun. I can honestly say that none of us wanted to return back to work after hanging out with her. I would highly recommend living somewhere else in the South Asheville area. This complex sells itself as a very "pet friendly" community, which could not be farther from the truth. I have a cat who clawed up two small areas of my upstairs hallway carpet- the total damage was about 6 inches long each, if that. I called to have the property management give me a cost estimate for the damage SEVERAL times prior to my move out date (starting at about 6 months ahead of time). My request was ignored up until the last absolute minute. I had an estimate done from a separate local carpet company, who quoted me about $300 to fix the damage. This company said the two tears could be patched up. Yet the managers at Hawthorne claim the ENTIRE upstairs carpet and padding would need to be replaced in order to fix the two tiny damaged spots. I am now paying over $800 for a brand new upstairs carpet. When asked to be given the paperwork on how they crunched the numbers, I was told they "were not allowed to show me." Personally, I think this complex will nickel and dime you for everything in order to keep the property afloat. So, please be mindful of that if you are thinking of moving here. Initially, the management was great, but the recent staff changes have been extremely detrimental to this property as a whole. read more

Sarah and Leah were very professional, always followed up with me and responded to my emails swiftly. They were also very genuine, caring, and understanding about my situation! I've lived here for 18 months and love it! Phase 3 has washers and dryers, and as a new mission hospital employee they gave me a discount. I moved here under the impression that the amenities would make the cost of the rent worth it.. boy was I wrong! The amenities are not taken care of. Pool is often closed due to other tenant rude negligence in following simple cleanliness rules, not surprising though as they just leave trash all over common areas and neglect to clean up after their pets. Printer in office area is always our if paper and has extremely poor print quality. Staff often forgets to fill water/cups/towels/etc. The lawn is well cared for except the dog parks are about 80% mud... not grass.. and not to mention TINY! very little room for dogs to run around. No easy access to facilities near pool either... and the closest restroom you're not allowed to have wet suits on to go too. "Starbucks coffee bar" only available when staff is in office. And beware if sitting in the computer lounge while their open... they talk like a bunch of cliquey rude teenagers... read more

I have lived at Turtle Creek/Hawthorne for the better part of 17 years and I must say that I am having second thoughts about renewing my lease. The office staff, and others have echoed this, are seemingly more interested in their higher-renting residents than people like me who live in the more "modest" buildings. The change machine in the Laundry Room is, 99% of the time, either broken or empty. Apparently, it's too much trouble for them to check it. IMHO, the rents, fees and rates are out of control. I can't afford to buy a house at my age. I feel stuck in a situation where the rents are going through the roof and my income can't keep up with it. I do NOT recommend to my friends that they move in here. read more

My family and I have been living at Hawthorn at Southside for the past couple weeks. So far it has been a great experience. Among the notable experiences, the maintenance men have been very enjoyable to work with, and have been quite responsive. As a fitness geek, the fact that their workout room has free weights is a huge plus for me. Lots of community events going on. A nice little park for my toddler to play at. They're super accommodating if you have a pet. Oh yeah, and in the community room, they also have a Starbucks coffee machine with free coffee. Can't beat that! :) read more

My husband and I had an awful experience with this complex. The photos of the apartments online are not what they offer. We traveled from out of state and when we arrived we were greeted by a less than enthusiastic woman who was checking her phone under the desk for most of our "meeting." We were told over the phone that an apartment that met our specifications would be available to rent late July but when we arrived we were told that no three bedroom apartments would be available anytime soon. Over all we were highly dissatisfied with our treatment and the apparent lack of communication or knowledge of the leasing agents. If you are looking to rent I would look elsewhere. I really wanted to like this place from what I saw online and on their Facebook page. I called to schedule a visit and they never even took my name. We showed up and there was chaos in the office. The man that greeted us was nice but was not up to speed on this property. He was filling in from another property. He did the best he could and was asking for help from others in the office but they acted like they were too busy. Two ladies and another man at desks, and this guy helping us couldn't get any straight answers or help from them. The property looked nice. We wanted to see more and be taken on an actual tour but it didn't happen. We were rushed over to a two bedroom apartment then straight back to the office. We were interested in seeing other apartments but they don't keep models of the most popular newer floor plans. I was very disappointed that the employees here didn't try to win me over. Money in the bank, ready to sign a lease, and nobody wanted it. I took my money elsewhere and got treated much better at The Aventine Asheville. We signed a lease there the next day. read more

Me and my children are living here in Hawthorne at Southside NC for almost four years. We choose this place because it was cheaper and had everything ..like pool playground like any other Apartment. But since last year the Rent went up a hundred dollars, and this coming year it will be another 100 Dollars. We got mold, Closet doors they fell out few times almost hitting my kids, screen doors and blinds they fall off and out. I hope a lot of people are reading this and choose another Apartment. When we moved in, the Management was nice, helpful, now they are rude, and arrogant! This is the worst experience we have ever dealt with as far as an apartment or landlord has ever gone. They told us we could rent a townhouse with a basement and after we paid our $60 application fee the ignored us and didn't return phone calls or emails for over a week. After we finally got ahold of them they told us a basement was no longer available. After we asked for a refund for our application fee they again dodged our phone calls and emails. We would call them and they would apologize and promise to take care of it and refund our application fee and tell us they would call us back later that day. Two or three days would go by with no phone calls and we would contact them again with the same results. I finally showed up to talk to them in person and they looked me in the eye and again apologized and promised to refund the application fee and return a phone call later that day. They never called us back. We called again today as a final straw after three more days of never hearing anything back and they refuse to let you talk to the property manager David. They have our phone number they can easily make things right but they choose to ignore you. Do yourself a favor and choose to live anywhere else except for here! They will blow smoke just to get you off the phone or out of the office and then refuse to help you. read more

After numerous attempts, the office staff flips off calls for maintenance. Even problems that can cause fire hazards. Only the new section is kept nice. Ours is filthy with cobwebs in rafters, paint chips falling off, tons of cigarette butts in pine needles around plants. They never follow up. Not worth the high rent, filth, and headache. read more

I have loved living at Hawthorne so far. It's only been about 2 months. The maintenance team is great! They get to your problem quickly and efficiently. The only thing that I was a bit unhappy with was, the dog washing station is closed in the winter for some reason. That is when we need it the most! Also when it rains the dog park is a mud pit. It would be great if they put down wood chips. read more
