I can't imagine our wedding without Paul as our photographer. From our first meeting, he put us at ease and stepped right into feeling like an old friend. He is soft spoken and kind, and took the time to learn about us before anything else. When we were nervous, he was able to get us laughing again. It's been several months since our wedding and our appreciation for Paul's talents has only grown as we've been able to relive the day through his gorgeous photos. We feel so lucky that we have so many spontaneous moments of our wedding preserved alongside all the big, expected ones. The photos he makes are way more than "candids;" he caught so many fleeting expressions, hugs, and snatches of conversation between us as well as our family and friends that it felt like he knew everyone there and could anticipate what was coming. Even when we were taking more traditional wedding portraits, we felt so relaxed and comfortable that it shines through in the photos and there is a lot of laughter on display. All of this is testament to Paul's skill and experience but also the kind of person he is; we truly did feel like we had a new friend along for the wedding day. We could not be happier we worked with Paul as our photographer for our July 2023 wedding!! Our experience with Paul was the best combination of both really enjoying spending time with him and really loving the photos that he took. Booking wedding vendors can take on a checklist quality, but something we really appreciated about Paul is that our relationship with him didn't feel transactional. We first met Paul 5 and a half years before our wedding when he took a photo of us on the dance floor at our friend's wedding. We loved the photo and the pure moment of joy he had captured so we hung it up in our home. We then moved across the country, got engaged, and were in need of a photographer for our own wedding. Paul did a fabulous job on capturing our wedding ceremony. The photos tell the story of our ceremony exactly as it happened while capturing both the subtle and the grand moments. It almost feels like Paul had an auto-capture on for whenever an expression showed up on someone's face. One thing I noticed is that he made sure to capture photos from different sides of the ceremony location. I believe these will become more important in the future when they can refresh our memories for a better reconstruction of the day. I also appreciate how he handled the difference in the skin tones between me and my partner. I am terrible at posing for photos and Paul somehow got me to look good in the photos. Paul was able to identify great spots and background elements in the garden as we walked around taking photos. Paul is an absolutely incredible photographer and a wonderful person to be around. We hired Paul for our San Francisco wedding and it was easily one of the best decisions we made. In addition to beautifully (and creatively) capturing the energy and excitement of the day, Paul was also an absolutely pleasure to work with at ever step of the way. I agree whole heatedly with all the other glowing reviews - hire Paul! Our wedding was in San Francisco the past August and had approximately 65 people in attendance. To say that we had high expectations for our wedding photographer was an understatement: we wanted someone who would be able to capture the dynamic energy and emotion of our big day in a natural, joyful way. I am happy to say that Paul exceeded all of our expectations and then some. We initially reached out to Paul in February through his website and we scheduled an introductory phone call. At that time I was chatting with a few different photographers in the Bay Area but was impressed at Paul's thoughtful questions regarding our vision of big day as well as the logistical considerations (venue locations, lighting , size, etc). From our first meeting at his lovely home, Paul was kind, thoughtful, considerate which made us feel like we were in good hands and helped put us at ease during the craziness of the planning. He asked us to consider which moments would be most important to our wedding and helped us think through the logistics of the day. Paul was also helpful in planning some of the big day itself: we had scheduled a city tour with our guests to occur between the ceremony and reception but were unsure where to go in the city. He recommended locations that would be both enjoyable for our guests and would make good backdrops for photos. In addition to the city tour, the day itself had a lot of moving parts which could have been really challenging to photograph (indoor ceremony in City Hall, outdoor brass band parade and cable car city tour in full sunlight, indoor reception with low lighting in small antique store). Paul and his second shooter were well prepared and able to shot gorgeous photos in every location. Paul was also very mindful of which moments would be most meaningful to us. For example, we had mentioned that we specifically wanted lots of dancing photos from the reception and so Paul made sure a remote flash lighting system was set up in the reception venue which made for some fantastic dance floor shots. We had also said that we wanted to make sure we had a lot of candid photos of our friends of family and so Paul made sure to mingle among our guests, putting them at ease and getting natural, candid photos of our loved ones. We had so many great photos of our guests that we printed the photos and included them with our thank you cards! After the wedding, Paul was able to send us our sneak peaks only after 24 hours (!) and the full gallery a short time after that. At this point, I was already very impressed but what happened after that really blew me away: Paul emailed me a few weeks after the wedding to me to ask if he could photograph some details from the wedding that he wasn't able to get on the big day (handkerchiefs from the brass band parade, wedding invitations, etc). He told me that he felt that those details were important in telling the story of our wedding and he wanted to make sure they were captured. I realize that it would've been easy for Paul to simply send the photos he already had but the fact that he found it was important to capture all the small details really speaks to his thoughtfulness, professionalism and excellence. Paul did a fantastic job shooting our civil ceremony at the SF City Hall. I had chosen him based on his photographic style, and the results came out great--they are exactly the photos that I had hoped for! Everyone has their own ideal photo style so you should browse the web to see what your style might be. I told Paul that I want more candid/photojournalism-style shots, not blown out Instagram-looking pictures that are heavily filtered or have lots of blurred foreground objects framing the shot. He absolutely delivered on that. Perhaps not surprising in SF, as we were posing for the final shots outside on the steps of city hall, building security was wrestling with a belligerent man being escorted out the door. Paul took it all in stride and had us move a bit and then reframed the shot. Love that he could roll with that. Communication was great, and the turnaround time after the shoot was exactly as promised. A+ would hire again. read more

At our wedding, Paul put our parents at ease as we posed for photographs, gently encouraging us to show ourselves at our best. He's funny and charming, so everyone felt comfortable around him. Spectacular!!! That is the word that comes to mind when I talk about our experience working with Paul and the results of his work. Our kids got married in a majestic space in the Redwood forest and had a wonderful outdoor reception. The weather was cloudy and misting with occasional sunshine. It was a large crowd, and we asked him to include various clan shots involving 15-45 people. Every aspect of his work was amazing. The lighting was perfect in every shot, regardless of weather. He captured the majesty of the Redwoods with sweeping shots and then closeups of the ceremony. Every person looked so photogenic in every shot. The posed group shots were outstanding, with everyone looking in the right direction and engaged, and the candid shots truly captured the energy and fun of the event. The many photos of the bride and groom were priceless, gorgeous, romantic and really captured their happiness. The joy of the parents leaps right out of the photos. I thought I had fully appreciated his work when we spent so much time on the online gallery, but I just received the 12 x 12 lay flat wedding album that I ordered, and I'm using the word "spectacular" all over again. Do not skip ordering an album. Paul gave me great guidance on storytelling as we sequenced and planned the layout of the album. The two page lay flat spreads, including the majestic Redwood forest ceremony and the two page spread closeup of the couple kissing under the wedding canopy, are breath-taking, and many other aspects of the joy of that day come through in the album in a way that you just don't get viewing online. Full Disclosure: I didn't hire Hazel Photo for our wedding photos, but Paul was brought in as a second shooter by our photographer when one person in the photography team couldn't make it because of Hurricane Hermine. So, I can't comment on his process or communication leading up to the event. Paul was *a dream* photographer! All of our family members, entourage/wedding party members, and guests raved about him, and he was such a pleasure to work with. Posed shots with large families and wedding parties can be really annoying, and we were running behind schedule, but Paul was the perfect professional. He was warm, relaxing, and focused - giving people direction so that they'd feel natural, keeping people laughing, and moving us swiftly through a very long shot list. The photographers we hired aren't local (though they were also great!), but I'm so glad we got to work with Paul and that I can recommend him to local friends. We haven't gotten our photos back yet (which is to be expected, the wedding was 2 days ago), but my spouse and I were so enthusiastically raving about him that I immediately wanted to go look him up and leave him glowing reviews. Even more specifically, as a queer couple, we've encountered a TON of wedding vendors who are warm, enthusiastic, and "comfortable" with a gay/queer wedding, but it's clear that it's not their normal. Paul went above and beyond basic comfort; he quickly demonstrated such a level of cultural fluency and competency that without knowing anything about him personally, I trusted that he saw and understood us. Paul photographed our same-sex wedding and we'd recommend him 1000%. We initially chose to work with him because of the quality of the work he did for our friends' wedding. His documentary style stood out from all the other "cookie cutter" wedding photography we found out there in contrast. His warmth and genuine interest in capturing the most precious, organically heartfelt moments came through immediately in our initial consultation with him.
