I arrived in my pumpkin carriage (better known as the Northern Line) and strolled down a very busy Long Acre which was jam packed with Christmas shoppers and tourists and found refuge from the madness in Rose Street. A quaint, quiet wee street with a slight Dickensian air to it. The small, independently run salon was a breath of fresh air from the faceless anonymity of the big chain salons I've patronised in the past. It was obvious from the outset that Rick knows about hair and he took a good look at mine and had good chat with me before whipping out the scissors. The result is that I'm now delighted that my hair no longer makes me look like Tina Turner circa 1990 and is very pretty, and I'm ever so pleased. Moreover I feel confident that should I ever have any further hair disasters or even small queries; I know exactly where to go. I will certainly be recommending the Rose & Crown to whomever shall listen and I will definitely be returning whether for a new do, colour, manicure or massage (yes, they do all that in one cosy wee place! Not in the same room, there are different rooms, obviously.) Staunchly recommended for those who find it difficult to trust hairdressers and for any hair catastrophes the personal touch here is hugely reassuring.

As an idiot student, I was looking to get my hair dyed a wacky colour. Popped in to the salon to ask advice and Rick took one look at me and said I'd need a better hair cut if I was going to dye it. Got to admire the honesty! From that point on and for the next 10+ years, Rick handled cutting my hair better than anyone else. I have quite curly and awkward hair (as a guy) and Rick managed to cut it in ways that didn't make me look like a complete idiot. This was something that previous hairdressers had somehow failed to accomplish. Even over the course of 10 years, I never felt that Rick got lazy or complacent when cutting my hair. He'd always be willing to discuss different styles as my hair changed over the years. His prices are reasonable, considering the central london location, and Rick himself is a top bloke. If you're looking for a recommendation for a good quality, unpretentious haircut in Central London, then I have no hesitation in recommending Rick and the Rose & Crown salon.

The stylist gave me good hair advice and suggested different styles and variations I could do with my hair. My hair wash was very thorough and my hair definitely felt a lot cleaner and in better condition when I left. All the staff were very friendly. I didn't have to wait for my stylist to be ready which I have done in the past at previous hairdressers. Definitely recommend.

Situated on the prettiest road in the Borough, fronting the Common, next to shops and cafes crowded with young mothers and their children, Jo Partridge is a peaceful haven where the music isn't too loud and the service is laid-back but professional. I have used them now for a couple of years having graduated from a famous West End barber, and am more than satisfied. My daughter likes them too, so they cater for all styles:-)

I think they think because they give you a glass of cava and your allowed to sit in one of their overly- aggressive massage chairs they can double the prices. Anyway!In sharp contrast Jo Partridge is an unpretentious breath of fresh air. The staff are really friendly and will bend over backwards to accomodate you. They have a good selection of drinks, current magazines and a good selection of background music. As well as that they also cut and colour hair to an exceptional standard and actually listen to what you want. The atmosphere is spot on, with really friendly staff and lots of places to sit and relax while you wait for a nail technician to become available. There is a food and drink area which has a small menu offering cakes, quiches, juice, alcohol, tea and coffee. Unfortunately, you can't book in advance so, unless you arrive at a very quiet time, getting a coffee and flicking through magazines seems to be pretty much part of the experience. The usual prices for nails and hair are quite reasonable, considering that this beauty parlour is run by the same company behind Cowshed. They don't offer a full manicure, so at £10 for a shape and paint (with a free bottle of nail colour to take home) I'd say it's fairly good value if you just want a quick fix. Having nail art will vastly increase the price - especially if you're like me and prefer to have the whole set done - it's £1.50 per nail! My experience was somewhat marred by the sullen attitude of the woman doing my nails. However, I think I was just unlucky, as the other nail technicians seemed really chatty and nice. Don't get me wrong - I'm not expecting for someone to actually feign interest in my day, but a little bit of interaction and friendliness doesn't go amiss! My nail art also looked a bit amateurish, so my advice would be not to bother having nail art - it bumps up the price of your manicure and the options are fairly limited. For a special occasion, or before a big night out, this is a fun place to come with a friend. You could eat lunch or have a coffee depending on the waiting time, and after your treatments you could have a go in the 'selfie studio', which is free to use. They washed and blow dried my hair brilliantly twice and were charming, helpful, and the whole experience was lovely. After having such a great time with the hair side, I thought I'd get my nails done. I've had two manicures so far, which are just simple polish jobs, but it's been lovely, my technician has given me a little hand massage with each manicure and I've left with perfect nails, and super soft hands (I need to get some of their hand cream...) Did I mention that they let you take the polish home with you?? Yup! You pick your colour and get to take a lovely fresh bottle of gorgeous polish home with you. All for £15! I mean, seriously, how can you not be excited by that?? PS: They definitely do appointments now (a previous reviewer said they didn't)

We arrived to the salon a bit before one and noticed each Japanese hair dresser (about three of them) was quietly servicing their clients over soft music. The gal at the front desk introduced herself warmly and promptly led the husband to a seat. We showed her a few "inspiration" images we saved from the interwebz and she seem to have understood what we wanted. She was snipping away for at least 30 minutes (I appreciate her attentiveness to detail). I looked up from my magazine and lo and behold....I have a brand new, hot husband. It was shocking what some layers, a few strategic snips here and there could do for a man. After that, they were off to wash his new hot hair, came back to the original chair to get a nice head/neck/shoulder massage before blow dry and style. After the blow dry, she snipped a little more. We both loved her so much that we got her card. Will update with her name.

But I had good results using rollers at home. She cut my hair too short, she advised it look better this way, it did not. She advised i dont get layers, but in the end added some layering on my request. Layering adds a lot more style to hair. I have been to far better hairdressers They didn't seem to have sophisticated hair styling tools at their shop, only heat tongs, she didn't not even use the hairdryer much to add volume or curls to my hair. Hairdresser was fairly boring, had no flair for what looked good. And could not replicate the style in the picture I showed her to begin with. No sophisticated styling products to make hair look silky and smooth, frizz free, as you find in higher end salons. Price was ok at £64 for cut and blow dry
