When she moved to primary care, I had to wait until she was excepting my insurance. I literally set a reminder in my phone every month to call and check. It has been a challenge for me to find doctors that I trust and truly feel have my best interest in mind. Maya is a kind, caring and great at what she does. I feel comfortable and like it's more of team effort vs someone simply telling me what I should and shouldn't do. She wants to learn about her patients lives so she may in turn have a better understanding of what values and goals are important to them. She wants you to voice your concerns because no one knows you as well as YOU. I don't dread my visits to the doctor anymore, which is such refreshing feeling. I have 3 foster kiddo's and would love to have them see Dr. Smythe as well although, they do not take Medicaid at this time. If that ever changes I'll get them assigned as their PCP right away! Although, providers offices may take a specific insurance companies coverage. Each insurance company has their own network specific to each of their plans. Providers aren't privy to know those details. That's why it is always best to use YOUR insurance companies website or provider handbook with their list of providers that are currently in network for your specific plan.

I've been to urgent care in the past and the wait has never been less than 1/2 hour. They saw me and took an xray on my chest to be sure it's not pneumonia, it wasn't. Overall, my experience has been fairly positive, but there are definitely some improvements that can be made on the administrative side here to improve the clinic. I like my doctor and believe that she has my best interests in mind, and I enjoy my appointments with her. I really appreciate that they have an online portal for scheduling appointments and messaging, and that they offer evening hours for those of us who work a standard office schedule. However, I don't think I've been seen on time once since being a patient at this clinic for several months now. Granted, I've been tardy a few times as well, but the majority of the time I've been no more than 5 minutes late. On average, I then spend about 15-20 minutes waiting to be seen. My doctor can also be slow with returning messages and uploading the visit notes to the patient portal, which leads me to believe that the providers here have stretched themselves too thin with patients. I understand the desire to take on as many patients as possible (and to maximize profits, sure) but when your patient load impacts your current patients' experience at the clinic, perhaps it's time to reassess things? Extend the appointment length and schedule in time to work on patient notes and referrals. Our time is important too. I had an incident recently when I was scheduled for a blood draw at the clinic, and I was ill that day and unable to make it. I called the office twice, and left two voicemails as no one picked up either time. I asked for a call back and a referral to a diagnostic clinic for the draw instead. No one ever returned my message and I had to reach out to my doctor several days later, informing her that I hadn't been able to make it and I needed that referral. No idea what happened there, but checking voicemails and returning messages should be standard procedure at a medical office. Additionally, I do wish the doctors would be a little more cost-conscious when it comes to suggesting procedures and supplements. Naturopathic and holistic care isn't always covered by insurance, and not everyone can afford to pay out of pocket for supplemental care. My doctor once recommended I take a supplement for three days prior to a blood test that cost $50. $50 for a supplement I'd take for three days! I care about my health, but I don't have limitless resources to spend on healthcare. Overall, I do like my doctor and the clinic. With some improvements to make the entire experience more patient-centric, I really feel that it could be someplace amazing.

I arrived on time, and they asked me to resubmit paperwork that I had already completed online. This took about 10 minutes. I sat for another 10 minutes, and asked why I wasn't being seen. The receptionist informed me that they ask people to arrive 30 minutes early to fill out paperwork, which I was never made aware of, AND even I were, I don't know why they would ask a person to come in 30 minutes early who had already completed their paperwork online ? It's very disrespectful of their patients time. I considered rescheduling to their Hillsboro office because it was going to impact other appointments I had that day, but they wouldn't have been able to get me in for quite some time which was not an option for me given my level of pain. At one point, I was quite literally, verbally attacked by a medical assistant for questioning why I was asked to come in so early, asking about rescheduling, etc. The only reason I didn't leave is that I waited for this appointment for so long, I'm in excruciating, chronic pain, and rescheduling would have pushed out my ability to be treated. Nurse practitioner was thankfully very professional, which I hope is more indicative of how Dr. Stephenson will administer my initial treatment. However, I will never set foot in the Happy Valley office again, and I will be actively searching for another solution longer term.
