Because it's so hard to find specialists right now, one of my labs was sent to the wrong type of specialists causing me to have to find two new specialists. One of them is not taking patients until next April. The nurse responded for me to get on the wait list. Do you know what it feels like to not be able to get out of bed at all and have no energy to do anything? And I have these large masses at the bottom of my neck that are not being treated? I have now found two new specialists and asked for my labs and a referrals to go to each of them. After not hearing back I called in to find out the doctor is not back in until next week. Next week! This means sitting and waiting another week to make appointments and one of them is out of state and unable to make my flight and travel arrangements. Every time I make an appointment with the doctor something happens and I end up seeing the nurse; I'm fine with the nurse but when that is who I am expected to see. Now, I will have to suffer in pain and absolutely no energy and unable to get treatment for what is wrong with me while no one is in the office apparently that can handle paperwork when the doctor is out. And out often. I know there are few options out there right now and that is really said for us patients.

The doctor had an emergency to step out which I understood but calling me less than an hour before the appointment was kind of disappointing. I'm driving and I didn't have a safe way to listen to the message or answer the call, probably won't return to this clinic. Friendly staff and I didn't have to wait long for my appt. Carol did my mammogram and she was easy to talk to and explained everything clearly. Very friendly and considerate. He presented with extreme GERD with very intense left chest, back and arm pain. They, in a nutshell told him to take two omeprazole for the next two weeks, and did not address his pain. He is a high performing athlete so cardiac issues could be present. They also mis-documented his visit saying they checked his lungs, when in fact he reported he was never touched with a stethoscope. The ER however addressed these issues more thoroughly and found a potential past small heart attack with an unknown date. Disappointing is the word for this office - another classic example of capitalism healthcare.

I checked into the Urgent Care at Park Nicollet, where a very helpful person asked if I'd like to check out Smart Care. She said it was a new service and virtually no wait (v. the long line at Urgent Care). I thanked her and trudged a short way down the hall. Honestly, that moment likely changed my life, or at least my health. I was treated quickly and expertly and have since made Smart Care my primary provider. I've stopped in for vaccinations, treatment for muscle strains, more stupid sinus infections and have always felt that I received the best care possible. I can easily reach out to them through the MyChart website or with a quick phone call to see if an office visit is necessary. The whole team is friendly and knowledgeable. I always feel as if my concerns are heard and acknowledged. I recommend that anyone looking for a primary care team check this out!

SmartCare by Park Nicollet offers much lower prices, but dramatically limits you to providers within the Twin Cities metro area. Even then, many physicians (including my long-time primary care physician) who work for Park Nicollet are not part of the SmartCare program, which tends to rely on Physician's Assistants (PAs) for primary care needs. I've never been impressed by doctors with diplomas, at least outside of specific surgical expertise. I know many PAs whose expertise rivals those of general practitioners. For 90% of us, you don't need a doctor to diagnose your sore throat and prescribe meds. (In fact, an increasing amount of primary care is *finally* being made accessible through virtual visits.) It's been an active year for me, medically at least: two total knee replacements; a few asthma complications that required medication adjustments; a fun visit to the foot doctor to see if he could help level out my leg lengths after the first knee surgery; pre-op and PT visits for the TKRs; a lovely colonoscopy; and a few other visits I think. All within 10 miles of my Plymouth residence. Next year I probably won't go interact with the healthcare system more than a few times. Only nitpick: The appointment scheduling lines are consistently understaffed to handle call volume, so wait times of 30 minutes are not unusual. Ideally you can use the website to schedule an appointment, but sometimes you need more assistance.
