This mural is located on the Newport flood wall. It is the work of Gina Erardi who completed it in…read more2020 as part of a series of 9 such murals celebrating Newport's 225th anniversary. It was inspired by the old Southgate Street School, the city's only African American school during the time of segregation, and Newport's historic commitment to educate all its residents even during segregation. In preparation for making this mural Erardi interviewed former students of the school and even had a former student, Virinda Garland Doddy, assist with the murals design The mural is in great shape and depicts a teacher helping a little girl write on a chalkboard and a man and a woman in a cap and gown. The background is a wave of color. The mural was funded by a $13,000 grant from the Horizon Fund of Northern Kentucky. Parking here to get a closer look is kind if tricky. It is located off of a pretty busy street with no parking. There is a lot of parking garages within a reasonable walking distance. Anyway, as with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other murals in the area or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. I just did a mural tour between Newport and Cincinnati. Fun fact: The Southgate Street School is still standing today and serves now as the Newport History Museum.

This mural depicts women living in our community who have returned home, became leaders and sought to break down the stigma surrounding those with criminal records who have re-entered society. The mural's design features 5 women. From the left: Sheila Donaldson Johnson, senior paralegal at OJPC, DeAnna Hoskins, president and CEO of JustLeadership USA, a national organization dedicated to decarceration and who created the first office of re-entry in Hamilton County; Tyra Patterson, social justice activist and community outreach strategy specialist with Ohio Justice and Policy Center (OJPC); Tracy Brumfield, the founder of RISE, a publication that provides information and resources to inmates in preparation for release; and Belinda Coulter-Harris who now works at Cincinnati Works, where she helps to connect people coming home to jobs and resources. Time Saved vs. Time Served was brought to life through a team of eight Youth Apprentices and two Teaching Artists. This abstract mural is located in the Gano alleyway on the side of 21c. Museum Hotel Cincinnati. It…read moreis in great shape and is a collaborative effort between Jenny Roesel Ustick and Kiik Create who painted the piece in 2018. It is 60 feet wide and 15 feet wide. This was actually part of an exhibit of the two's work that went by the same name as the mural. I like the color used in the mural it is like high-def, a color explosion. I am normally not an abstract art kind of guy, but this one works for me. Construction in the area has really limited metered street parking to get a closer look of this mural. There is still some in a reasonable waking distance. I parked about a quarter mile away. There are also commercial garages and lots you can park in, but they are pretty pricy. You could easily pull into the alley that the mural is located, get out and take a closer look Anyway, as with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a very long stop. With this in mind, the Center for Biological Diversity's Endangered Species Mural Project works with artists, scientists, and organizers to bring endangered wildlife onto the streets of cities and towns around the country. These murals are imagined as tools to help celebrate local endangered species within communities, and to encourage people to make connections between conservation and community strength. Spearheaded by Portland artist Roger Peet, the mural project promotes an affinity for the natural world and the diverse species that help define it."(www.biologicaldiversity.org) For the 17th installment of the Endangered Species Mural Project, Roger Peet partnered with ArtWorks to create two murals along Cincinnati's Little Miami Scenic Trail to feature the Indiana Bat on the walls of a 1,000 square-foot underpass. It shows all the historic buildings in Lindenwald. I recognize most of them but should probably ask my parents for a list to make me better informed. Ben Dysart and John Wolfe are also credited as artists on this mural. It's on a Minnick's Drive Thru. Lindenwald used to be its own city, I believe, and is a historic part of Hamilton. It's nice that there's finally a mural to celebrate the area.
