Absolutely Gorgeous!…read more This theater was built in one year by businessman George Coleman Sr. because he wanted vaudville to come to Miami, OK. That's pronounced "My-am-uh" The outside is notable. The inside is palacial. Gifted to the city by the decendant of the original owner, the city thought to knock it down. It was in need of restoration and the city did not have the funds. Local citizens banded together to save this theater from demolition doing repairs themselves, a little at a time as the money trickled in. Boy has that labor of love been worth it! The original 1928 Wurlitzer organ was sold after the advent of modern movies when it was no long necessary for live music to accompany films. During the restoration process a stranger overheard a conversation about locating the origial organ to reinstall it at the theater. This stranger knew who owned that organ! After much fundraising, the original organ is back in it's place. The theater has remained open through the years for vaudville, stars of stage and screen performed here, movies from silent era to today, community theater group performances and they host the local elementary school Christmas concerts. Volunteer docents give tours of the lobby and theater to visitors. There is no fee, but they accept donations toward continued restoration. Definitely worth a visit.

The acting, costumes, and overall production values are stellar for a small town theatre like this one. I have always enjoyed their productions, but it wasn't until I attended a half dozen small scale productions in other cities that I fully realized how wonderful JLT is! We have a lot of talent here in Joplin and it's nice to have a night out doing something different now and then. Most recently I attended "High Society" in Summer 2010 and it was fantastic. The theatre itself is small and unassuming on the northwest edge of Joplin, but once inside it's clearly a well-run machine and the interior is quite sophisticated if a little spartan.

Most recently, I've attended several productions of Midwest Regional Ballet held here. This is a very well-kept venue and plenty large for its small community. It's a shame they don't publicize and use it for even more - I think it would be a terrific concert venue for start up and moderately successful performers traveling through the area. It's about a hundred times nicer than the nearby Joplin Memorial Hall.

My first memory of Springfield Little…read moreTheatre was our rural junior high school drama class being hauled down to watch a play in the metropolis of Springfield!! I couldn't tell you what we watched, but I remember we actually "dressed up" to get on a school bus and ride over an hour for that event. Fast forward at least 20 years, I still got excited (not too dressed up) to see Shrek at SLT. Springfield Little Theatre is located in the historic part of downtown Springfield. They have done so much work cleaning up, restoring and attracting new businesses in the downtown area. I REALLY like Springfield's downtown mix of restaurants, arts, businesses, salons - there is truly something for all ages. Needs a little more parking, but I don't know of any downtown area that doesn't struggle with parking challenges. Back to SLT - my sister, her friend and I all saw "Shrek". I have watched the movies a million times, but still loved the play. I was incredibly impressed by the cast, music, and the amazing costuming! The price for the show was $35 (I think) which isn't cheap, but really isn't bad when you consider a full night of entertainment. Since this is a review of SLT not Shrek - I will focus a little more on that. SLT has a TON of events (not just performances) and educational opportunities available throughout the community. The educational outreach impresses me the most. What a unique chance for kids (and not kids) to take part in the classes, workshops and productions. The prices appear to be quite reasonable and if I did have children- I would really want them to consider the activities and volunteer opportunities.
