In the last decade, I have made clubbing a centerpiece of my world travels. I never get tired of visiting new venues, with new crowds, and hearing new music. Europe in general is just heads and shoulders above anything in the USA, it is the absolute best place to party. This was my third club in London, and it had quite a reputation to uphold. When I saw that Sophie Ellis Baxtor was performing the night I was in town from LA, I was very excited. I have been a fan of hers since I first heard 'murder on the dancefloor', so to see her live for a 3 pound cover was just amazing. Unfortunately, the audio engineers at the club must have been asleep at the wheel (or perhaps on strike, given that 1/2 the city was on strike that day). The mic kept cutting in and out, and even giving out static. But other than that, the sound was pretty good all night long. The lighting was good, but nothing special for a major nightclub. The music was a good mix of pop and dance, which kept the crowd moving all night long, much better than any club in Los Angeles/Weho. The crowd was a good mix, mostly younger, a lot of cute guys from all backgrounds.
One thing lacking in this club is that for a major club, it would be nice to have another area of music to wander in and out of. My biggest complaint is that they do not allow gum!!! I had a brand new 18 pack in my bag that I had to throw out. Had I known, I could have easily hid it. I seriously could have smuggled a small arsenal of weapons or a mini drug lab through their lax screening, but damned if I could be allowed to chew gum to freshen up my teeth.
The drinks were cheap, I just wish euro clubs would start offering cocktails like they do in America, I get tired of Red Bull/Vodka's and Rum/Coke. The restrooms were clean and well maintained. The upstairs restroom was the best option. We got there around 11:30 and the line was not bad at all. They offer discount wristbands outside G-A-Y on Compton Street, which is a good area to start out the night.
Overall, it is a great place to dance the night away. The only problem is that it was impossible to find a taxi outside the club, but this seems to be a problem with the city as a whole, not really the clubs fault. I guess the best thing to do is just stay until 5-6 am, when the tube starts again, but I can think of many worse places to spend a Saturday night/Sunday morning. I really wish we has a club like this in LA, closest we have is a Thursday night only club, Tigerheat, but even there, the music just isn't as good as Heaven. read more
