Kinloch Lodge Hotel - Toffee pudding with ice cream

Shown a mini tour of the lodge and brought to "the big room". The dining room with about 8 tables. Neatly decorated with gold framed paintings of the lineage of the hotel. We were gifted some complementary fizz for our anniversary which was so special. Spectacular service, my husband was interested in some whisky and the hostess/whisky expert/amazing woman came to ask what he likes and recommend something. He loved what he got, a local whisky made down the road. We had the special of the day: Pie and Pud. Mine was cheese and leek and his was venison. Delicious! The first dish we've had in Scotland where even the vegetables were seasoned. Perfect pastry and such savory flavors. We were almost too full for the pud! Almost. Toffee pudding and chocolate brownie were intensely sweet and yummy. After dessert, we were welcome to have tea in the parlor, but of course! Great views of the loch while having fresh loose leaf tea, homemade shortbread, and a crackling fireplace. We were frequently checked on to make sure we were doing ok and just felt so welcome and at home. We could have stayed all day.

We were there at 5:57 pm, one of the waitresses walked in the front door and the hostess almost didn't let us in from the cold outside to wait in their lobby. I ordered a starter and my wife an entree and one desert was 25.90 pound with no drinks besides glasses of water. Most of the time there were 4 tables occupied while we ate and there were two servers yet after our food was served the waitresses never stopped back by to check on us. We were seated in the middle of the place and I had to go to the bar to ask for a desert menu and refill on our drinks, have written this whole review and have still received neither. I'm about to go back up and ask again. It appears the hostess is actually the proprietor. She left telling the serving girls she was going on an errand and they visibly relaxed and became a little more easy going. I've been traveling the U.K. with my wife and we've had pleasant experiences everywhere. So much so in fact that I haven't even thought to leave a review because it's all just been so great and we've eaten out every meal the past three weeks! But this place was poor enough I decided I'd make it known to steer clear. Also, its bland. The nachos with chili were just that; nachos, chili and cheese. No personality. I thought maybe they just threw it together behind the bar. The steak pie was probably three or four ingredients. My water just came after asking for the fourth time. No ice. On top of all this, we've been completely pleasant this whole time. My wife and I have been such good customers we often are offered free deserts and deals after telling our server or bar tender of our travels but we just weren't welcome here. The serving girls don't appear to be paying much particular attention to the other guests either. They just stay behind the bar when not serving food with the proprietor talking. The good news is the black currant and mango sorbet is very good. The wifi is also strong. Though each scoop was 3.50 pound. I asked and was told it was a mistake, which would have been admissible by itself, but it wasn't.

And now for the cons: It wasn't that the breakfast was terrible, but the selection was very limited. There were 2 choices, and both involved eggs. Two members of my family don't eat eggs, so that was an issue. On the second morning, even though breakfast was included in our rate, we went elsewhere. Dinner was equally limited, so we found ourselves going to Portree to eat, which is a good 40 minute drive from the Hebridean, which was exhausting after a long day of hiking and exploring. It would've been really nice to just be able to unwind and eat in the hotel. In general in Scotland, I found most restaurants very accommodating of our food quirks, always coming up with something we could eat. This was not the case at the Hebridean. If I ever return to Isle of Skye, I would stay in Portree, as that is where the vast majority of the restaurants and amenities are, and staying there would've saved us a lot of driving.

The bar in the restaurant has a very nice list of whiskys- a good amount from Isle of Skye. There is a casual pub in the hotel with a casual menu and drinks. You can also sit out side of the pub on the lawn with picnic tables. Our room was very cute- small but we were only sleeping there. Even with the pub downstairs it was very quiet and enjoyable. My most favorite thing was that the marble line (hiking trail) is about 2km from the hotel- it made for a breathtaking morning run amongst the mountain and sheep.

We turned in and asked the waitress if they take walk ins. After checking with the chef she sat us in the small dining room. At first, we felt a little out of place, it appeared only those staying in the hotel were dining that night. Our drinks were good, local gin and whisky. I was pleasantly surprised by the fish and chips. It was probably one of better ones I've had. Husband got the pork fillet and he enjoyed it. Nice waitstaff came to check on us frequently and didn't treat us like we didn't belong.
