It was in 1993, when we were in a down market much like today. My mortgage company had agreed to accept less money than I owed them in order to move the property. However, at the closing, they changed their tune and tried to get me to hand over $6500 in order to close. In retrospect, I'm guessing this is a common trick they use - knowing you are eager to get out of the house and some people probably pay up. Most fortunately, William Kanteres, the broker, was present at the closing. He got right on the phone with the mortgage company and demanded that they honor the deal that he had negotiated with them. Everything then went as originally planned and it cost me zero. I would also add that the people working at this firm all seem to be highly competent, and exhibit a kind of low keyed professionalism that I really like.
