She got out of her car and went out of her way to open the store back up just so we could try the iconic local desert before we left Rothenburg. She also when tour of her way to tell us about all the different flavors and which ones were allergen free. The pastry was delicious and she makes a large variety of flavors. Would highly recommend giving them a try. On top of this the store is in a great location right near the main square and close to some of the best views in Rothenburg. Definitely something you cannot miss when visiting.

In stead of operating mobile kiosks in the weekly open local Farmer's Market, it's a permanent store for the two farms for your convenience. As the store name suggests, it offers many locally produced items...sausages and meats, vegetables, cheese, etc. It also sells some gifts and home décor items for which we came here. My wife happened to see something she liked displayed in the front window as we passed by this store in the morning as we headed in to town. She simply had to go back to purchase it on our way back home. "Der Bauernladen offers meat and sausage products from its own production. Pigs and cattle come from Hans and Christian Schneider's farms. All animals are kept animal-friendly (cattle and calves kept on straw; pigs with exercise area) and are fed purely plant-based. We use high quality spices and herbs. Traditional recipes are used for traditional types of sausage such as bratwurst, press sack or farmer's ham, which do not use any other additives" according to their website write-up. It's not a large shop, and they currently limit on customers inside up to three people due to COVID-19 health prevention measures. It's the sign of the time. The slightly larger flavour selection and the different options for special cups made this place looked promising, and I think I made a good decision. I got an Eierlikör Becker, which consisted of 3 scoops of your choice (the scoops were thankfully relatively small) with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and a biscuit, topped with eierlikör-flavoured syrup/custard. I'm sometimes turned off by flavoured syrups but this one was actually very good - the taste of liqueur was so convincing that I almost thought I'd actually gotten something with alcohol. The gelato itself was also good! I opted for Malaga/rum raisin and hazelnut gelato and both flavours were relatively mild but pleasant (not artificially concentrated), and the gelato was very creamy. It was €7,50 which seems a little overpriced, but while I didn't look at the prices at the other gelato shops, this does seem in line with food prices in general around the market square.
