By far one of the better private charters I have taken. Capt. Peter gave more than great directions on finding his dock and boat and a very thorough overview of all the safety equipment before we set out. Seas were calm and the weather cool for a July Sunday. Capt Peter made sure everyone was safe when on the boat and it was moving, was very knowledgeable about the long-Island sound and various landmarks during our charter. We followed the birds but the usual spot was quite crowded with a lot of other boats so Peter took us to a much less crowded spot and we got into hitting strippers and blues pretty good. What was the best thing for me was how patient and attentive Capt. Peter was to my two boys. I have been on many other charters before where the Capt. And crew are not nearly as good or concerned about the kids. But Capt. Peter answered every question they had (which were sometimes asked multiple times), he was great helping them fish so my father-in-law an I could man our own rods, and was great at teaching my boys how to cast, jig and reel. With a little instruction from Capt. Peter, my 9 year old was even able to land his first striper completely unassisted! I can't tell you how happy and proud this made my son. While we did not round out the day with any keepers, we definitely caught a nice showing of fish. When we got back to the dock and were heading to the car, my boys were like "Dad, how soon can we come back and fish with him again?". I would definitely recommend Capt. Peter and FlylightCharters to anyone, especially if you have kids. A much better experience than the crowded party boats, much more fun, and a very, very reasonable price!

The fish of the day to catch was fluke. Everyone in our 6 person party caught one along with about two dozen sea robins. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and Captain Peter was in high spirits. Besides the many stops, we got a great view of the city and Long Island. For lunch they had a decent amount of drinks and fast food for sale (burgers). The price (around $80pp) is a little on the steeper end, but it was worth the trip for sure. At the end of the trip one of the crewmen filleted any fish you caught for you (tip the man!). I would recommend checking out these guys if you are in the NYC area and want a fun day trip.

That matters more to me than anything else. They love what they do and it shows. They maintain a super clean ship, awesome gallery and superb mates. Especially Kyle. Sandworms are sold aboard which is a lifesaver when you can't get to the tackle shops. They also give you free clam baits. There's ample parking that seems to be free for now. Not sure what post pandemic conditions will bring. I love these guys, I try to fish with them anytime I can. I hope they never change. They also catch fish and put in the extra effort to do so.

Good company wasn't just good, it was great!…read more I had a fishing charter planned for my father for quite some time, and we finally the bullet and took the trip Doug and Chuck (first mate) were great! I booked directly with Doug over the phone and paid the rest in cash on the day of sailing. We departed for an early morning 530 5 hour trip, watched the sunrise and slowly sailed pass for Trumbull, a few light houses, and into the New York waters. We started fishing for stripers for about 40 minutes with no luck and then moved onto a different spot where we started fishing for smaller fish. We ended up catching a lot of Porgies and Black Sea Bass and ended up having over 65 fish by the end of the trip. One of the highlights of this trip was catching a small sand shark! It was so fun and made my whole trip! Chuck, the first mate, gave us all the pointers and tips on how to fish, and even gave us some entertainment when the seagulls would catch the chum from the boat! He filleted all of the fish, and although there were a LOT of bones left in it, we still bought home a good amount of fish. I have never been deep sea fishing before but Doug and Chuck made it very easy. From the history lessons from the local surrounding areas, to the fun facts of the fish we were catching. The boat was clean, there were bathrooms onboard and the cabin was big , however the boat was a little dated. There was no soap in the bathroom or anywhere on board. We had to use hand sanitizer for a lot of stuff.

Unfortunately, there were several negatives. The seagulls were extremely aggressive--they were going into people's bags and pulling out food. People were feeding the birds, which only encouraged this behavior. Another downside was the atmosphere. Several groups were playing very loud music, making it difficult to relax and enjoy the beach. Parking was $40 per car on a Sunday in July, which felt expensive. The boardwalk amusement rides are priced individually, and many of them seem very old and dated. Overall, while the beach itself has some nice qualities, the aggressive seagulls, loud environment, high parking cost, and aging rides made the experience less enjoyable than expected.
