This is My first school in Berlin, literally. I spent about 8 months here. It took me awhile, but…read morefinally found the time to write a review for this. The first six months was the Integration course plus orientation course. At the beginning 1-2 months was the difficult, it not only about the study, also about adjusting the new language and teaching style here. it does make people quite frustrating. Well, Every beginning is difficult though. My teacher since the the beginning to the whole course end, never really spoke other languages but German. Which is good. it was difficult to understand at the beginning, but it does help me to improve my listening and speaking so much faster. I remember i was really angry couple times about the school, the classmate or the teaching method. but I do find my way and get used to the way how thing works there. Even we got the substitute teacher sometime, my main teacher was good. I considered myself quite lucky. In the end, I actually have a really good time and all my friends here was really surprise how my german could improve so much is such a short time. Something I have to say it, I also have some good friends their job are teaching. I do know how much to difficult to teaching an adult than a kid. Most of the time adult has too much pride and too rely on the teacher. As a student should find the way in balance, see what is the really important thing, and made the right call. Of course, The teacher is also the problem. sometime when the methods really doesn't fit you, better just switch to others, instead of waiting. One other thing i have to mention from my own experience. Most of the students come here just for study, but it doesn't mean everyone will be nice and open minded. Some of them bring their own discrimination to this country and bully other students. This school is really stand up for students that who bully and prejudiced. They really care about this. Some schools even they noticed the problem will simply ignore it. For me, beside teachers and students, also the school environment is a really important part of the study. The last two month, I took the B2 lever class. Went to different class. It was really different. The atmosphere is not as good as before. And I also met one teacher really arrogant and like mocking mistakes of students. Maybe it wasn't suppose to mean that way, but it does made me feel like this. I didn't like the methods of that teacher so i did switch my class and found the teacher with the methods that fit me better. The thing is I think most the schools are the same. There are good teachers or bad teachers, just like people, they are also different, people got different definitions about good and bad. It really hard to just judge something through reading. After all, it's really depend on what kind of school you looking for. For me, although the price of the school is not really cheap, there are still some parts that I like about in this school. which I don't think other schools might have the same.

I find the school leadership and administration professional and passionate about delivering excellent education and creating an ethos of kindness and compassion. I also find they are very willing to receive parental feedback and thoughtfully consider ideas brought forward. My children have learned a great deal in the six months they have been at BMS, as well they have developed strong bonds with their teachers and classmates. I highly recommend BMS!

My experience dates back to 2015. At the time, my daughter was 5 years old. She spoke English when…read moreshe arrived in Berlin after having lived in the United States, but she did not speak German yet. Her integration into this school was extremely difficult: she was bullied by classmates to the point of crying, in front of teachers who did not appear to intervene or take the situation seriously. I also felt that the teaching staff was not trained to support English-speaking or bilingual children. There seemed to be very little consideration for children in this situation (and not all of them are necessarily English speakers). We were even called in and told that our daughter should repeat the year. We refused, and in hindsight, I believe this recommendation had more to do with class organization and enrollment management than with her actual academic abilities. The following year, after moving to another school, my daughter actually skipped a grade. This clearly showed that neither her intellectual level nor her maturity had been the issue; the only difficulty was that she had not yet acquired German. My impression is that this school is not truly designed to support bilingual children or children newly arriving in a German-speaking environment, but rather to serve affluent German families who want their children to learn English. Finally, the tuition fees are extremely high and, in my view, do not reflect the quality or the type of activities offered by the school.

At first we assumed that a lot of the differences were cultural, considering that we were coming with a North American perspective. Teachers and staff yell (scream) at the children. It is ran in a very militaristic manner. When we first signed up for the school, they assured us that they had just hired a 'German as a second language' tutor since it is a bi-lingual school. They did not hire one until the second year of our child's time there. When we enquired about it, the principal responded "by law we are not required to have one". And that's fine, but a pretty low response if you told us there would be one a year prior. To make things worse, we had two incidents with two(!) different teachers at the school PHYSICALLY HURTING our child. The first teacher grabbed our child's arm so hard he left bruises. At first, the school showed concern, but there was no punishment from the administration for the teacher's actions. A few months later, another teacher pushed our child against a pillar in front of the whole class. We were fed up and (rightfully) outraged. We contacted the administration and they ignored our complaints. We didn't even get a response! Our child's psychologist took us to the equivalent of 'Children's Services for Schools' in Berlin, but unfortunately since it is a private school their hands were tied and were unable to do anything about it. They advised us to go to the police or hire an attorney. Since we were planning on leaving Germany after that school year, they suggested talking to a doctor. When we did, the doctor saw how terrified our child was and wrote a note to excuse them from the rest of the year. It was an absolute nightmare. I am sure Platanus is well aware of their power in being a private school. Many other parents had similar stories as well and when we left this past school year so were many other families. I tell you this to warn you and protect your children. There are many other schools available in Berlin, please, avoid Platanus at all costs.
