Simple doesn't mean comfy, as the church pews are a little rough on the the knees and the aisles are a bit tight. Standing room isn't kind here, especially when the church gets crowded. The ushers do a good job of keeping churchgoers in line and the priests are easy going enough not to bore people to death during their sermons. This church is the perfect non-gaudy (not God-dy) neighborhood church. Their last English speaking mass on Sundays is at noon.

Came here a handful of times and I must start by saying this is the most grace-based church I've…read morebeen to so far. When I went there and heard a couple of the sermons they were mostly refreshing. There was only one thing that I didn't really care for at this church and their sister church in Manhattan. And it was "the tithe". I have no problem tithing or giving but it was very heavily emphasized and it always felt like pressure especially after quoting Old Testament scripture to go along when it came time to give. This location in Astoria wasn't as bad as the one in Manhattan when it came time to tithing. I visited one time at the Manhattan and there is definitely without a doubt straight up legalism concerning the tithe. I saw it in a booklet that was at their book table up front and I was horrified to say the least. I'm only writing this because people need to know the truth. This booklet is written by one of the pastors there and he says that if you don't tithe God won't bless you which is total hogwash. And he's basing this on the Old Testament which we are not under. As born-again Christians we are under the New Covenant of grace who is Jesus Christ Himself. In the New Testament there is only one scripture that's mention about giving and it applies to all types of giving. And this scripture is 2 Corinthians 9:7 says; each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. This scripture is the only one I see telling us that we could give of our time, money, service and any other resources that's in our hearts to give according to the leading of the Holy Spirit moving in you. So long story short for me this approach is a complete turn off because I am for grace and freedom of the Spirit of God and not legalism. So on one hand I heard a great sermon from one of the pastor named Sherman and it was a complete delight to hear a grace filled message. But then there's another message that's not grace-based going on this same church pressuring the congregation to tithe or else written in this booklet. That's mixture and it's not okay at all. I really hope for the people at this congregation along with their sister churches will discern what God's word actually says and will change their approach on tithing. The way they are doing this is not grace based at all. It's putting people back under law. I hope y'all make a change on this. Thanks!

Seven years ago, I had a conversation with a Indian woman about Durga. She suggested that I should try this place. The minute I walked in, I fell in love. I will be totally honest here; haven't visited this space in a while because basically, I moved. I'm kinda partial to this place, because it was the first Hindu temple I've ever visited. Even attended a Puja here once. Despite the fact that I wasn't Indian, I still felt welcomed by everyone. Some of the women even taught me a few traditional dances.

A few people…read moremade a real effort to introduce themselves to me, which is much better than what I experience at most churches (aka absolutely no one says hi to me). Congregation is genuinely committed to investing in the Astoria community. Theology is sound (they are a PCA church, affiliated with Redeemer Presbyterian Chuch). Worship was a bit tame for my tastes. I'm not sure if this is a product of it being a presbyterian church but hopefully they'll be open to using real drums and electric guitars in the future. The sermon that was preached that morning was pretty straight forward. I think I would prefer sermons that are a bit more intellectually challenging or have some twist that make them a little more out of the ordinary. Overall, it's a solid community church with great people. I might eventually come back to it since I live so close to this church but I'm still in the church "shopping" process.

Plenty of seating and anywhere you sit you will get a good view and good acoustic means you can hear the priest clearly . Mass are available in English and Spanish and with the many services it means no excuses due to your schedule. I was struck by how wonderful the interior of the church is and from the design I bet it's very old . Glad I came to attend Sunday mass with a family friend and I didn't get bored or fall asleep.

St. Sabastian's is about as impressive as they come for Catholic churches in NYC. The place is…read moremassive and could easily fit a crowd of 2,000 and maybe more with standing room. Given the large Filipino / SE Asian population in Woodside, this place is sure to be crowded every Sunday of the week. The inside of the church has a modern appeal with a classic touch. The wide interior, deep walls, simple altar, and elaborate caved ceiling gives this place a real amazing look. Usually the priests are easy to listen to without boring the youngsters to sleep. The choir is situated on an elevated second floor and generally sing so well they garner a big applause from the crowd during the end of every Sunday mass. This is good for those of us who can't sing worth a lick, just let the professionals do their job. What does get me is how disorganized the crowd situation can be. For some strange reason, many people sit on the ends of the row leaving a huge gap of space in the middle. This makes for awkward seating for the late stragglers and even more so for people attending mass in a large group. The other thing is the lack of ushers. During communion, people just get up as they please and flood the aisles making the people traffic all the more congested. It's kind of like a bad club that has little flow of people traffic, resulting in plenty of "squeeze-bys" and difficult nudging from the elderly or handicapped. For the sheer number of people it can handle and the amazing choir, experiences here are for the most part good enough for return visits. Just watch out for the hordes of people crowding the Filipino / Thai restaurants in the area afterward, that's a whole new kind of seat jockeying.

The Church has been rife with scandals. The theft of a weeping Icon, a Priest working in a brothel back in GREECE, another Metropolitan having sexual relations with both men and women and impregnating a Nun. Was in the neighborhood recently and attended the GREEK FESTIVAL which is held in JULY annually. WORTH VISITING.
