Yelp has its own issues too. But in my experience -- especially with law firms, mechanic shops, rental-related services, healthcare specialties, and other service-based businesses -- Google reviews can be very misleading. Some businesses have nearly perfect Google ratings, but when you look closer, some of the reviews feel like bots, fake reviews, or paid reviews. Then you check Yelp and the picture looks completely different. For example, I came across a law firm with nearly perfect Google reviews, but on Yelp, that same firm averaged around 3 stars. Other locations for the same firm were closer to 1-2 stars, with detailed complaints that sounded much more like real customer experiences. Another tip for fellow Yelpers searching for lawyers: if a law firm has no negative reviews anywhere -- not on Google, Yelp, Avvo, Facebook, or any other platform -- that's a red flag to me. You really think they met every client's expectations? Every single time? Yo..let's not be naive lol. That doesn't mean every negative review is fair, and it doesn't mean every positive review is fake. But I've learned to actually study the content of both. What are people complaining about? What are they praising? Would those issues matter to you? And honestly, this applies to a lot of services -- not just law firms.but mechanics, doctors, therapists, contractors... oh yes, contractors are a big one. I'll have to write a whole separate review for the contractors I've used while remodeling and flipping houses. Different day. So no, I don't blindly trust Google reviews. I'm not saying Yelp is perfect, but Yelp gave me a better sense of the full picture. I hope this helps a mom, a dad, or a family, because some of these services and reviews we rely on are not as simple as finding who has the best tacos.

Anyone can Google the Family Code but very few have enough experience to know what each judge wants as well as a likely outcome based on the facts in front of him. My experience was that he was understanding and compassionate in a difficult situation and was willing to work with me, although I was the one who made a mistake. A good lawyer isn't cheap, so you should know that you will be billed accordingly upon the first in-person meeting but its an overall investment into your end goal. His background in mental health gives him an additional toolbox to work from which is extremely helpful. The case isn't looked at in just strict legal terms, but how the family members' mental health can affect the outcome as well. His office is a somewhat interesting spot in Carlsbad, I think he's got another one in San Francisco, so it seems small and personable. He's the one you'll most likely talk to directly, not a junior associate or receptionist.

I talked to several process servers and explained all our struggles and difficulties. I asked each of them how they would handle the situation if our defendant proved impossible to serve after trying. Chris's answer to that question was a confident laugh and, "I will have him served." That's why I went with him, and I am very happy I trusted my gut. Chris was able to take the limited clues and information we provided, track him down, and complete substituted service when personal service was not realistically possible. What impressed us most was not just that Chris got the defendant served, but what happened afterward. Close to the hearing, the defendant filed a Motion to Quash Service and also sent us a separate packet challenging the service that had not even been properly filed with the court. It was stressful and confusing, but Chris immediately stepped in, provided detailed records, explained the applicable small claims service rules, and helped us understand exactly how to respond. Chris was patient, responsive, knowledgeable, and incredibly thorough. He did not just serve the papers and disappear -- he stood behind his work and helped us deal with the defendant's attempt to challenge service. The judge ultimately denied the defendant's Motion to Quash and found the service to be valid and sufficient. Serving the defendant was the biggest hurdle in our case, and I am so happy Chris helped us get over it. Now that we've won the judgment, Chris is even guiding us on how to claim the service fee, as it's allowed to be recovered by law. On the morning of the hearing, I contacted the company to obtain the status of service and any service attempt information. Because the court required detailed information regarding service attempts, a court clerk also contacted the company seeking the dates and times of any attempts. At that time, the requested information was not provided. My hearing proceeded without the service information, and the matter was concluded shortly thereafter due to the lack of completed service. Several hours later, at approximately 12:27 PM on March 9, 2026, after the hearing had already ended, the company sent a report containing alleged service attempts from March 5 through March 8. My concern is not simply whether service attempts were made. My concern is that the information was not made available before the hearing, when it was actually needed. As a result, the service had no practical value to me at the time of the court proceeding. After I disputed the charge with my credit card issuer, the company continued to send invoices and informed me that finance charges would accumulate and that the account may eventually be sent to collections.

They were very warm and professional. I felt like I was speaking to friends and not a legal team. We reviewed various scenarios and left without any ambiguity. They sent over our family trust and of course I had troubles following along with some of the legal jargon. Katie, Misty and Claire were always responsive and gave me support. They helped to keep costs down by recommending I personally record the documentation and supplied me with the addresses and tips on which locations are best. Yes they do have a service if you rather but it was simple enough that I opted to take care of it myself. They even warned me about solicitors who would be contacting us by mail posing as necessary services.
