Helping Hand Thrift Shop is the classic antique/thrift shop experience. Stuffed to the gills with clothing, furniture, jewelry, records and the like. The store has a fairly large fine jewelry collection, occupying several cases. There are also a number of fine Judaica pieces, like menorahs and mezuzah cases. There is an entire row of old clothing which I would have loved to pick through, but simply did not have the time. From the looks of it, there are definitely some finds for those seeking thrifted formal wear. The price range was pretty substantial. There were pieces that where 10 dollars (like an old hardwood box for a toy that I bought), to large antique pieces that are quite a bit more. You could definitely spend an hour or more in this shop: the selection of artifacts is huge. Would recommend. read more

I was just on a walk without any intention of buying a rug, but I walked into the Helping Hand shop, and saw a huge rolled rug, and asked the price. I'd been trying to replace an old rug for years, but the rugs I loved were always more than $10,000. She said, "It's a hand made Persian. $2500." She showed me the picture, and it was beautiful, so I bought it. I called the company that cleans my rugs and asked if they could pick it up and clean it for me. "How much did you pay?" The owner rug cleaning company asked. I told him. "Good buy. It's a $10,000 rug." Once the rug was cleaned and in my apartment, it looked better than its picture. read more

This is a really cool thrift shop! They have a lot of items from the past and it always feels nostalgic to come here. There is a lot to search through and see. They have a lot of items for every type of collector and decorator. They have a lot of jewelry, accessories, clothing, toys, glassware, books, old technology, and storage containers(like chests). You can find more as you look through the shop. They also sell chains for jewelry. I love to support a small business rather than go to a Micheal's and buy jewelry stuff from there. As others have noted, prices listed on items are not honored. I picked up one of the items to purchase that had a $10 sticker on it. When I went to the counter to pay, the woman behind the counter removed the sticker and claimed that wasn't the correct price and that it was actually $38. I explained that clearly someone had placed the sticker on there...she refused to budge. I said I didn't want it and walked out of the store feeling scammed. I could not believe this store!!!! I have been driving past this shop for nearly 7 years or more and have always wanted to stop in. I finally had a day off during the week and this was my place to be! I have been thrifting for over 18 years or more and never have I been someplace where I felt so untrusted. I parked outside where they have only meter parking and made my way inside. I was greeted immediately by a young man. I was looking for rugs and jewelry as well as clothing and this place seemed to have it all! Well, as I continue my search, I found little items that were priced incredibly and ridiculously high. I found a bobble head dachshund that was priced at $90 that came from a department store such as Ross or HomeGoods. I found a toothpick holder that was made of plastic for $20! They had a set that was sold separately at $20 each, they also had clothes for children marked at $40-$45! I could not believe this! I made my way to the jewelry counter hoping to find rings as I am a ring addict and have an enormous collection. The woman who was the owner assisted me but seemed like she was very bothered and annoyed at helping her own customer. I asked to see a gold ring and another ring that was over priced. The store is JAM PACKED and it's for a good reason! Everything is price insanely high, they are ripping off customers! It's no wonder there is so much inventory and it's a fire hazard in there, it's unsafe with no place to exit or run around if there is a fire. Also, if you are handicapped and/or have a wheelchair , forget about this store! There is absolutely no room to maneuver or walk down the aisles. When asked to see other jewelry, the owner came around the jewelry counter to the front entrance area to speak to the young man I was greeted by. She then said "oh are you buying that bag?" ***By the way, I came inside the shop with a giant bag, it's my thrifting bag!! It holds everything!!*** I kindly replied, what? No, this is my bag lol! The owner then said , "oh because we had one like it". Mind you, I was already in this store close to 15 minutes. What I didn't like now , is that she walked behind me and PEEKED inside my bag to see if I had stolen anything! I couldn't believe that! I didn't want to say anything but I felt very untrustworthy and not trusted at that moment. I then answered a text messaged and turned around to go back into the store, and the owner said " oh you can go ahead and leave your bag up front". I then replied no, I'm fine thank you. Didn't make sense as I came in with the exact same bag that didn't seem to bother anyone at any given time , NOR were there any signs letting customers know to leave big oversized bags at the front. So I decided to head to the entrance to exit, and I said to the rude owner that I was leaving now because I felt very untrusted here. So I left. II love supporting small shops such as this one and this place was not the kind I want to support. I will never recommend them or step foot into this place that wreaked of moth balls ever again. read more

I always bring visitors to this block for some amazing Ethiopian food and then we walk around the block and always stop by this antique store. The owners are kind and attentive and I always leave with something that's caught my eye. There's beautiful hand painted Persian drawing in beautiful hand crafted frames towards the back worth checking out. I'm so sad because I LOVE their selection, but as others have said they don't honor their price tags. I found a little stack of identical trays that were priced at $8 a piece except for 2 that didn't have tags. A gentleman working there asked if I needed any help and assured me that it was in fact $8. BUT when I checked out the lady who rang me up said that the particular tray I'd selected was actually $10 because it was in "excellent condition." How is that ok?? Came into the store by chance to search around for some decorative pieces for the home, found a nice little silver tray for my bar and the lady from the front moji tells me tho it's stickered and priced she isn't going to honor the price since she felt it was worth more! I had to leave my phone number and name just to see how much they are going to charge for it. Honestly I would of just said don't worry about it but the fact that she was seriously doing what she was doing was Ridiculous so I played along. Anyway I do not recommend this place. I saw a man walk away with maybe 10$ of cheap used kitchenware she charged him $45! After questioning her she stated that it was a private owned for profit and couldn't clarify if the profits benefited anything other than her pockets. Junk. Lots and lots of junk. Mostly Jewish and African themed junk. Cheap crap. Mass-produced garbage with retail pricing like new. You'll find no hidden treasure here. Of all the junk stores I've shopped, this is by far the junkiest. If I could write a song about pure junk, I'd write it about this gunk and then hide it in a trunk. If I could pen an ode to junk, I'd pen it about this place, apace, then launch it to outer space. Specific examples: - a standard Broguiere's milk bottle $8 (I have a couple "themed" ones if you want them, PM, haha) - $23 for a lump of glass (they say it's a paper weight) - $35 for a cheap glass water pipe with missing pieces - $5 for an old Robert Ludlam book ("Open" in the LBC sells for $1) - $23 for a fading, frayed 6" hula dancer (Made in Japan) - $8 for an old canteen cover ($8!!!) If this stuff has value then my garage is Ft Knox. (but the sign says they're available for filming, haha. You know, just in case you want to do a movie there) read more

I am all about helping the Jewish community. I think that this store is sponsored by a temple. This is my 2nd time here and I am disgusted the 2nd time around. The place is filthy, you can't set your foot anywhere because of the clutter and it's a total mess. More people would spend more money if they didn't feel so claustrophobic there. Many items are overpriced and not very antique or original. While there, in Little Ethiopia check out some Ethiopian restaurants. They are amazing. read more

Terrible service and energy! They do not honor their word. Bought a camera with a promise from the lady that I could return if it was not functional, she did not honor her word. At every chance she could she tried to go back on her promise. Granted, she did try to fix the camera but when she could not she rescinded on her promise. I took a stroll in the Helping Hand Thrift Shop today. I felt like I was in a walk-in closet! I saw lots of clothes, books, and jewelry. There were also some furniture pieces, lamps, and carpets. Some of the furniture looked like they could use a paint job. If you're an antique collector or need some props for a movie set, I'd recommend you check this place out. On a whim I pulled up to the store to run in and ask a question. I did not put money in the meter and so as soon as I entered I mentioned to Solomon(an employee) that I had not put money in. Well not only did he offer to watch my car he actually went out and put change in the meter for me so I could look around. Then if that was not kind enough he went back and out in enough for an hour so I could take my time to browse. That is as generous as it gets. The store itself is filled with treasures and you must really take your time to look. They have everything from Knick knacks to books, clothing and furniture.
