The park was built in conjunction with the EPA and the city. I imagine that this was part of the builder's agreement to provide green space in order to get their housing unit approvals. In any case, they did a very good job. The path around the perimeter is easy to navigate. There's bathroom facilities; a covered pavilion; a children's playground; benches placed periodically throughout; volleyball sand court; basketball courts; handball courts. All these activity areas are spaced between stately trees, sable palms, and sawgrass palmettos. So glad we stopped by again for some fresh air and a spot of nature. PS You can even rent the park!

You can find the park near the entrance to Calvary Chapel Christian Academy. This park was dedicated in 2003. I was surprised by how much was packed into its 3.26 acres. There is a full basketball court, pavilion with tables and grills, restroom, racquetball court, sand volleyball court, picnic tables, a playground with a toddler area and climbing equipment, slides, and swings for older children, and my favorite a paved nature trail. The trail wasn't very long but it takes you around the perimeter off the park and you could walk it several times. The pavilion can be rented from the city for private events. This park was actually quite busy for a weekday afternoon. Kids were on the playground, there was a basketball game going on, and some people were just sunbathing on the grass. Although a major road is nearby, this park feels like a tucked away secret.

Anthony Park was named in honor of African-American Private Charlie C. Anthony who lost his life in combat on May 12, 1969 in Vietnam. Charlie grew up in Alabama in a family of sharecroppers before they moved to a 5th where he attended the former George Washington Carver High School where and excelled in athletics as a star basketball player and track runner. In the summer of 1968 he was drafted into the army and was assigned to serve with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment of the 11th Infantry Brigade. While in Vietnam he was killed in action at the age of 23 on May 12, 1969 near Xuan Thanh, a small village in South Vietnam. He left behind a wife and young daughter. Posthumously he was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. PFC Anthony's official Army citation reads, "Private Anthony, with complete disregard for his personal safety, attacked, and killed the insurgents. When he and the remainder of the squad tried to prevent some enemy soldiers from skirting the flank of his unit, a firefight ensued that caused Anthony to be fatally wounded." The Charlie C. Anthony Park is 7.92 acres located on the Gordon River. For years the park was lacking in basic amenities, so much so that federal civil rights investigators claimed Naples leaders were discriminating against minority residents. Finally in 2018, Naples fixed up the park and installed a proper sign. Previously the park was just called Anthony Park. Today the park is as beautiful as all of the of the other Naples Park. There is a boat launch and the Naples Rowing Club keeps their boats there. Other park amenities include a community center with meeting room, restrooms, fishing pier, walking trail, tennis courts, lighted basketball court, playground, picnic shelters, outdoor exercise equipment, and open play space. One thing I especially loved was that the tennis court has a box outside where you can open it up and borrow one of their tennis racquets and balls. You would never see that where I live. Private Anthony is an American hero. It is a shame Naples took so long to fix up the park but now that they have it is a place worthy of Private Anthony's honor. I hope that his daughter takes her children and grandchildren here to play.

I'm living in the area for a few months and when I heard about a facility with a fitness room, basketball courts, and much more all offered for free, I jumped at the chance to use it. Of course I set my expectations accordingly - I didn't count on state of the art equipment or free trainers for example. But I was shocked that the air conditioning wasn't on despite a 96F day, and there wasn't a single fan in the fitness room. There were only two treadmills for my run and only one had a fan built in - but it was broken. The lack of air conditioning meant everything was wet and slippery. I had to tiptoe on the floor so as not to fall, and the mirrors on the walls were completely fogged up. It wasn't just a hassle but clearly a safety issue as well. So while I appreciated having a place to workout for free, I won't be going back and wouldn't recommend the Englewood Sports Complex unless you have absolutely no other options. The YMCA, just a few miles away, is fully air conditioned and has a lot more machines to use. There's a monthly fee but - as my father said - you get what you pay for.
