    West Lakes Hotel - Balcony

Actually, this place wasn't bad at all, though of course it is basically the bar, or should I say…read morerestaurant, located in a rather large hotel complex. Anyway, since I don't need to stay in hotels when I come to Adelaide, we just basically remained in the bar. Well, they certainly do have a great selection of beers here, which certainly does make it stand out from many of the other suburban pubs that I have visited, and the service was okay. However, what I really did like about this place was the balcony that sits next to the lake, and gives you some magnificent views. In a way this place is pretty cool, especially with the beer selection.

The phrase 'airplane food' popped into my mind, but there was no need to worry. For a start, planes probably couldn't take off with the generous helpings dished up at this fancy pub. On top of the half-price carvery deal the night we attended was an offer of free soup - a choice of two soups, in fact. Cheapskate heaven. I won't go on about the consistently high quality of the traditional fare offered by the professional kitchens of most pubs in Adelaide. Suffice to say that our roasts were definitely up to scratch. My beef was tender and juicy, yet with a crunchy crust. My partner's pork was succulent with lashings of perfectly roasted crackling. The gravy in both instances was proper pan-juice gravy, not the glutinous powder sort. The vegetable selections in the Bain Marie were regularly topped up with fresh material and the salads were a cut above the usual noodle, spud or 'green' alternatives. What a delicious meal we each enjoyed. It may have been a bit warm had we been lunching next to the vast expanse of north facing plate glass at our elbows, but the view at dinner time across the lake was ideal. Turn up your nose at soup, roast and beer if you like, but sitting back, with a lake view and a well-filled belly at the West Lakes Hotel, I say, 'Suit yourself!'

Ohhhhh two more negatives sorry when you are pay $400 a night for your room the least they could do is actually make you a fresh cup of coffee. UNFORTUNATELY! The have one of those automatic push the button and the machine pours out brown water with no flavor! If you ask for a real cup of coffee they want to charge you more for it. Seriously $400 dollars for my room and I still have to pay for my coffee! So I giving it a very weak 4 star's just like there weakest coffee possible! Yuk!

Ok, maybe I'd throw in the word comfort too, for this hotel had the most comfortable bed of my entire two week trip. Yup, I was as snug as a little joey in his mother's pouch. Oh, and the carpeted floors were simply Heaven with so much spongy padding underneath the carpet that I felt like I was walking on a cloud. I swear this experience was just like taking a trip to a spa, and it had me crying, "Why can't my carpets at home be this awesome!" Finally, the location of this one rocks!! The whole area near the hotel is loaded with bars and restaurants of just about every style--why I even found a sushi conveyor-belt restaurant around the corner. Kanpai! Yes Sir, whatever language you want to say it in---Kanpai, Cheers, Hooray, or Good On YA ----The Majestic Roof Garden Hotel is a winner.

What an eclectic bar it is - they have a Facebook page, the Karaoke is on Wednesday night, Red Uncensored and Terri-Louise Kelly may be reciting poetry on one night a month along with plenty of other local poets and there are bands on a Thursday and Sunday night. You can get nosh a la pub for around ten dollars, nothing too fancy but it will fill your guts and the locals will fill your head full of fun stories and strange sayings. This is an old school pub with a decent drive through and a pretty good car park. There is an outdoor area for the smokers and you would go a long way to find such an easy going and chilled out venue that deals in rock and roll as well as poetry. I quite like it because it hasn't got trendy, and it is not trying to get trendy. Who needs to be trendy when you have all the poets in Adelaide massing in the back room and waxing lyrical every few weeks - that says it all. Ever met a poet in a pub who didn't have a full glass and an eye for another?

I have to say though Paul has done wonders and I'm very pleased to have been associated with him in the days of live music at Brompton in the House of Bedlam. At the pub, the first night I treated myself to a couple of cocktails. The strawberry Pom sour and the tropical pornstar martini. I loved the fruity flavors of both drinks and would be hard pressed to pick a preference, just get them both! You won't be disappointed. They are a little pricey, but lucky me-I had a two for one offer. In the end I went to the pub all three nights and always enjoyed what I ordered. I only had the cocktails the first night with my special offer because the happy hour for beers and wine is amazing-$6 a drink-you cannot go wrong. I opted for the house white wine which was decent. Regarding food, somehow I ended up down a pumpkin path. I had the wood roasted pumpkin in curry sauce and loved it! Another night I had the pumpkin satay soup of the day, and that was also delicious. Alas, on my third night I had whiting-I think that's a local fish, grilled and it was fantastic. The fish was delicate and perfect with dill sauce. The chips were the nice pub style thick cut, and tasted like fresh potatoes. A little pricey, but it balanced out with the happy hour wine. The portion size of the mains is on the small side, but most likely because we are used to such huge portions that a normal sized portion seems small. The ambiance is classic pub and the service is good. All in all a great establishment to spend some time in.
