In the ye olden days it used to be a traditional stop for those making the treck, but nowadays if you can't hold onto your thirst then you really have a problem.....like me! There isn't too much special about the Halfway, it is just a normal, common Adelaide Pub that caters for the family looking for an inexpensive night out and the pokie punters. One point of interest is that the front bar is seperated from the rest of the establishment by the bottle 'o, which I think promotes a strong family unity.....dad drinks with the boys and mum is out the back with the kids (grandma is on the pokes)! Everyone wins! They, like most pubs, do have weekly specials and functions, with pub poker on Tuesday nights and a 50's/60's band playing every last Friday night of the month.

Mind you I used to live near here, but rarely, if ever, actually ventured in side, which is why I decided to come and check this place out when I was down this way with a friend. Well, it is certainly not a pub that I would be coming back to, nor recommending to anybody, even if they happen to live in the area. It pretty much looked like your typical, and rather blokey, suburban pubs. Even though it has cheap schnitzel, the atmosphere pretty much puts me off.

The phrase 'airplane food' popped into my mind, but there was no need to worry. For a start, planes probably couldn't take off with the generous helpings dished up at this fancy pub. On top of the half-price carvery deal the night we attended was an offer of free soup - a choice of two soups, in fact. Cheapskate heaven. I won't go on about the consistently high quality of the traditional fare offered by the professional kitchens of most pubs in Adelaide. Suffice to say that our roasts were definitely up to scratch. My beef was tender and juicy, yet with a crunchy crust. My partner's pork was succulent with lashings of perfectly roasted crackling. The gravy in both instances was proper pan-juice gravy, not the glutinous powder sort. The vegetable selections in the Bain Marie were regularly topped up with fresh material and the salads were a cut above the usual noodle, spud or 'green' alternatives. What a delicious meal we each enjoyed. It may have been a bit warm had we been lunching next to the vast expanse of north facing plate glass at our elbows, but the view at dinner time across the lake was ideal. Turn up your nose at soup, roast and beer if you like, but sitting back, with a lake view and a well-filled belly at the West Lakes Hotel, I say, 'Suit yourself!'

I do wonder at times why I would never step inside for a beer, but a part of me realises that maybe back in those days there wasn't anything all that interesting inside - just old men sitting at the bar drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. In fact the pubs that I did visit back then were all basically that. However this is another of those pubs that they have completely renovated and it now looks like one of those trendy pubs with a decent beer garden. Mind you the beer garden is basically non-smoking, which does add a change to a lot of the other pubs that you visit. It's not a bad place, but not a pub that I would regularly visit.

These were very enjoyable evenings, where you would very occasionally get knocked out early (then hit the turps) or stick with it for the long haul and kick it on the final table. I have also been to the Ex for other reasons than those card related, namely drinking in the front 'Keg' bar. Basically a big horse-shoe bar that still retains much of its character. Recently they have instigated a new menu which I haven't tried, but they did tend to be a little hit and miss in the past. Hopefully this has been rectified as it is a top spot otherwise!

This is definitely one of those places, which has been transformed into a pretty awesome pub actually. According to their website, they have recently upgraded and I quite liked this area. Although this is an "outside" area, it's protected from the elements but still allows glorious sunlight to stream on through the windows warming up my chilled bones. The heating in that area helped a bit too!! There were staff bustling about here and there but all were very friendly and eager to please. We looked at the menu and I noticed the regular sort of pub fare that you'd expect from any decent bistro. Nothing really jumped out at me. They had parmi's, steaks, burgers, pizza's and a few seafood options. Because I'd seen this on the menu online before arriving, I knew I was going to order the bruschetta to share with hubby as an entree. It also helped that I saw a serve of this coming out and it looked quite big! For main hubby jumped out of his steak comfort zone and went for the Oven Baked Chicken Breast : Filled with double smoked ham, semi-dried tomato and haloumi cheese served on garlic mash potato and topped with citrus hollandaise I chose the Coorong Beef Rump Parmigiana: With chips, salad and your choice of sauce I swear I'd barely sat back at the table after ordering before the bruschetta came out. I had been craving this and was really really looking forward to it! It didn't disappoint. It looked pretty on the plate. The bread was lovely continental bread, lightly toasted, and the tomatoes were sweet and full of flavour. I just love tomato and basil. Such a heavenly combination! The sticky balsamic added a nice touch too. If I'm being picky I'd say I'd prefer my bread to be a little more toasted but hubby said he liked it just the way it was so that just comes down to personal preference. Unfortunately it was finished just as quick as it came out and now our hunger, rather than being partially satiated, was enraged! We had been warned that hubby's chicken was going to take at least thirty minutes before it was ready however it did seem like it came out sooner than that. Still, I like when you get that warning because then you're not left wondering if they've forgotten your order. Hubby was a little disappointed when he saw his dish. Only because to him, it looked small. I thought it looked ok on the plate but probably could have done with a bigger salad so that the meat didn't look so lonesome and maybe could have done with some fries on there too. I mean when you compare it to what mine was, this is like an itty bitty serve and yet cost quite a bit more than mine. I know that's not how things are priced but when you have a hunger.... There was nothing wrong with the taste of it. Hubby said it was good. Nice flavours throughout but he couldn't get past the size of it. Not that he should have complained really because he ended up eating half of mine! My beef parmi was HUGE! And they were so generous with that cheese!! The meat was good, tender, the tomato sauce was ok and the cheese was gooey as it should be. All good. No complaints. I'm not sure why we weren't "wowed" as there was nothing wrong with anything either of us ate and everyone was lovely to us. Most of the things we saw on the menu I thought were reasonably priced or at least, comparable to other pubs/bistro's. If you're a local or simply looking for a good bistro I would recommend The Woodville. The food is good, the prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly and from what I see, there's usually quite a few people about!

There would've been maybe 10 patrons in there if you were lucky. I went with my friend and a child so we placed 2 orders, my friend placing first and telling them that there was another order from our table. Her order came out as I was walking back to the table (least they were efficient, right)? But the poor 5 year old had to wait an extra 15 mins for her food to be brought out.... And it was burnt. Children's meals are meant to come with a sundae. We asked 3 times if we could have the sundae brought out to us before it was actually delivered. Horrible, in attentive service. I won't be returning. Also, no beer was available on the day, it didn't bother us as we weren't drinking but other patrons weren't too impressed
