It's a fairly modern facility with open spaces and nice sight lines. An abundance of materials fill the shelves making it more likely you will find what you are seeking. The staff were enthusiastic to stamp my library passport and asked me questions about some of my favorite locations so far. They told me about the unique features of this location - kids garden (which not sure it's been started just yet for this year) and there's a pollination garden on the lake view side. They had some seating options but generally felt a bit smaller overall compared to some other locations, so I love that they have areas outside to sit. Definitely worth checking out on a nice day!

Nevertheless, for a mere $5 admission I was happy to explore the Brown County Historical Society and Museum when in New Ulm last year. There is not much to see in the way of exhibits (the building also houses a research library) but I'm always curious about local history when I visit a new place. Here I learned about the local farms and how the area was settled. There was also a wonderful exhibit on the US-Dakota War, something I was either never taught in history class or something that was brushed over so quickly that I forgot. A special exhibit of illustrations from Wanda Gag (local author and illustrator) was also on display at the time I was there. I also saw postings for many community events held at or sponsored by the Brown County Historical Society. While inside the museum offers a brief but informative history of New Ulm, one of the stars here is the building itself. Originally home to the US Post Office, it is described as a German Renaissance style brick building. Even if the museum and building are closed, it's worth at least stopping by to see this stunning architectural achievement.

Manages to be huge and modern and glassy while still feeling cozy. It's my absolute favorite place to curl up with a book for a few hours, or bring my laptop and work on writing my novel. It is also very clean, including the bathrooms, with helpful staff. I will say there are many homeless people who like to sleep on the comfy furniture here, and the stench can be something fierce. I'm not trying to be insensitive, but really... the smell is enough to gag me. But when I lived in Honolulu and Portland they had this same problem in the grand main branch of their library. I think it's just what happens in major cities. Fortunately, there are three floors of reading lofts where they do not go, and also all four floors have private study rooms available. You can reserve them online, or you can ask to be let into a walk-in one. They always have several available. Another nice thing about this library is the desks. They have reading lamps and power outlets for laptops. And the place is flooded with natural light. It makes a huge difference in my mental focus and clarity of mind to research or write somewhere with light that is both bright and soft, with a controlled temperature. We are lucky to have this library.
