This library is STUNNING. I don't think I could possibly take photographs that would do it justice, it's an architectural piece of art. Manages to be huge and modern and glassy while still feeling cozy. It's my absolute favorite place to curl up with a book for a few hours, or bring my laptop and work on writing my novel. It is also very clean, including the bathrooms, with helpful staff. I will say there are many homeless people who like to sleep on the comfy furniture here, and the stench can be something fierce. I'm not trying to be insensitive, but really... the smell is enough to gag me. But when I lived in Honolulu and Portland they had this same problem in the grand main branch of their library. I think it's just what happens in major cities. Fortunately, there are three floors of reading lofts where they do not go, and also all four floors have private study rooms available. You can reserve them online, or you can ask to be let into a walk-in one. They always have several available. Another nice thing about this library is the desks. They have reading lamps and power outlets for laptops. And the place is flooded with natural light. It makes a huge difference in my mental focus and clarity of mind to research or write somewhere with light that is both bright and soft, with a controlled temperature. We are lucky to have this library. read more

When in Minneapolis, why not see the library? Personally, I just needed to stay somewhere with A/C until it was time to check in at my hotel. It's beautifully designed! Lot of long and large windows. The lobby area's ceiling is so high up that your eyes keep traveling upwards. There's an elevator and escalator in here. The inside looks more like an office building. I think the building also has walkways upstairs to other buildings too. Anywho, I sat and read at one of the tables for a bit. Each table had a place to charge your electronics. Lots of libraries tend to have people experiencing homelessness hanging around. Not a problem since it's free for all. Just a reminder to be kind to your fellow being. read more

Downtown Central library that takes up a city block. Parking below the building (or metered street parking-if you can find it). Between Nicollet Mall and Hennepin, a mainstay of downtown Minneapolis. There is an element of wariness you must have since this is a major spot for everyone to congregate. That being said, there is uniformed security and always friendly library staff-just don't leave your items unattended! They offer classes and events that are interesting and fun! The parking right now SUCKS as construction is blocking off the garage. The bus route stops right out front tho, so you could park somewhere else and hitch a ride. I was so tired trying to find a spot i ended up paying $8 on street parking. I came here solely for their Zine collection that, while small, is the only Zine collection I've ever seen a library have and i hope more catch on! Great library! This is a community hub for Minneapolis. Beautiful design and function. Public computers and wifi for everyone. Sit and read all of the books and magazines you love and talk with friends. It's nice and quiet. There is a very nice kids zone with lots of fun activities for children. They have a nice friends of the library used book sales area. I love to but the used audio books for family trips. There is also a coffee shop with fresh food on site. Came to this library about a month ago while I was on vacation. Really wanted to check out what this library had to offer. It's got such a plethora of books. Really cozy place. What really did bug me were the "weirdos" loitering at the library. Such as a bunch of homeless people in the back of the library sleeping on the chairs and couches. With the exception of the University of St Thomas library, this is my favorite library to study at. It's huge (four floors), has tons of windows, and plenty of space to lounge or get work done. My favorite spots are the tables along the East windows, or the balcony seating located on the West side of the building. I also love that they conveniently have a Dunn Brothers on the first floor. For academics like myself, I think they have a great selection and variety of texts. Their rotating featured literature (located near the elevators) are always unique and thought provoking. I avoid driving whenever possible. This library is super accessible by bus and train! Unfortunately, there are a handful of reasons I can't give this library five stars. 1) It's not an atmosphere suitable for everyone. Because it's a safe and public space, you will encounter a fair share of homeless individuals. This might make some people uncomfortable. 2) Bring a wet wipe. The tables are always greasy, dirty, and perfect for sharing flu and cold viruses. 3) No noise control. They don't have a designated "quiet zone", nor do they enforce library etiquette. There have been a number of times when my quiet corner is rudely interrupted by someone taking a phone call, or laughing out loud to YouTube videos on their cell phones. There have also been a few instances when fights have broken out in the echo-prone lobby -- you can hear the cursing in all corners of the building. read more

I am a total book nerd. I read too much to buy everything I want to read, so I am also a total library nerd. I can't say that I have ever met a library that I like more than the Central Library downtown. It is gorgeous! The stacks are well-stocked. If there is something you don't find, they are so helpful in searching it out with you or transferring it from another branch. I love that they put catalog kiosks in the stacks, so you can immediately look for something else if the book you want is not there. I also love how thorough and easy to use their database is. Sometimes, there are three editorial reviews and even some book club notes attached. So smart! In this weather, I especially appreciate the easy online reservation and renewal system. The reading lounge by the fireplace is so welcoming. Add Dunn Bros and free wi-fi and you can make an afternoon of it. The art is lovely as well. I find myself just popping in, just because I am in the area. I have also never been to a library that has so many of the museum passes available. Most times, they have at least one on-hand for each venue. Usually, it is several. read more

Coolest library I've ever been in, this review is a long overdue one for me. I've never reviewed it since it's such a great place that I wanted to make sure I didn't leave anything out. Since I discover a new study spot or an amazing selection of material on different topics almost every time I'm here it's safe to say I'm still not going to cover everything, you're simply going to have to come here and see for yourself how great it is. To start with the space is huge, when you first walk in there is a end to end 4 story atrium, you can go up either by unwalled stairs or glass elevators. So many great places to read and study inside, they are everywhere so you'll for sure be able to find a spot that works for you. If you need to take a breather there is a Dunn Bros on the first floor, and you can either eat and drink in there or if it's in a covered container you can bring it into the library. So many other great things about this Library that I frequently use are the Special Collections, The large room with books from 80 - 100 years ago, and Microfilm of newspapers going back to the late 1800's. You can find lot's of info and pictures of practically any part of Minneapolis history in the Special Collections, including historical events, buildings past and present, as well as neighborhoods, heck I wouldn't be surprised if they even had stuff on the house you live in, really great resource. I also love looking at old newspaper ads on Microfilm, you learn so much about everything from vintage furniture and fashion styles to mannerisms, and what the times were like. The artwork back then was gorgeous, even old movie ads from earlier eras can be very artistic. Oh and I find it very entertaining to read some of the sales pitches in the ads, really can be funny sometimes, especially some of the ones during the Great Depression of the 1930's. So much to do at this Library, you're gonna need a bit of time to discover and enjoy everything there is to offer, at least on your first visit. read more

This place is an absolute gem. Obviously it's a completely stunning building, and enormous! So there are many spaces to tuck in and read or study, and a lot of public resources available. There's also a ton of art in there! I loved wandering through the Cargill exhibit that was showcasing art from area high school students - there were some remarkable pieces in there. There was also a gallery collection on the fourth floor, but it wasn't open when I was there. (Will certainly require a return trip.) And the children's area is amazing! There are SO many books, so many hands-on opportunities, and so much natural light. In no way is this a convenient location to where I live, but I will absolutely be taking my toddler here on a regular basis going forward. I see a lot of reviews have called out some of the "sketchy" people who regular this library, but you guys. It's a public library. It is intended for the people. If the individuals who seek to use these public resources aren't up to your standards, that's on you. read more

As with many downtown public spaces - this somewhat competent library unfortunately is a little seedy for how new (and expensive) it is. The elevator smelled of urine, gross. It is at least quiet, has OK meeting spaces, and a lot of work areas. It is a little confusing inside because there are not floor maps readily available, if you are looking for, say room N202. It is tempting to take the escalator to 2, but you can't access the main part of the library. At a cost of $110 Million to taxpayers - one might expect A LOT more. But that's government! read more

This library is lovely, but security is intense! Are there that many people trying to steal things? Probably. If you park in the ramp, make sure you take your ticket with you -- pay machines are only available on foot. $5 for 3 hours is a decent deal for a morning downtown. read more

The library in downtown Minneapolis is more epic than Despacito. Here is a place where the booklovers, the houseless, and the weird genealogical society people can all co-exist in a cathedral of knowledge. If you are into handwriting analysis, there's a really old autograph collection. And there's a room you can reserve with a piano they just let you bang on. I would have given 5 stars, but I'm always worried that someone will be crushed by the motor-driven book shelving that collapses entire aisles, just like the garbage compactor scene in the old star wars. Oh and I can't wait until they build the planetarium on the roof. read more

This place offers bona-fide adventure! I have no idea if anyone here actually reads books. I know they use computers. For what? Porn, arranging drug deals, pirating movies, that sort of thing. I come here whenever my favourite spots at my university are clogged up, because this place is HUGE. But to be honest, I never get anything done because there is too much action and excitement happening around me. Here is a brief list of what I've observed: 1) Five security guards/cops shouting down a man who refused to empty his pockets when requested. I really appreciate that they were not forceful with him, but it made the library a lot less quiet. 2) Jackson Pollack-inspired fecal masterpieces on the bathroom walls. 3) A man sitting upside-down, legs up against the aforementioned bathroom wall, smoking from a bright red bong. 4) A very intense Chess club meeting. Wednesdays, 10am-noon. 5) A man peeing just outside the front doors. This is crazy because the library is like the only place downtown with a public restroom. 6) An emaciated woman hacking up blood in the big hallway that runs through first floor. 7) People two to three income brackets apart, enjoying the same vast collection of literature. I give this library 5 stars for entertainment value. But in all seriousness, I also give 5 stars for the insanely helpful staff. They are very knowledgeable and seem to have great enthusiasm for what they do. Kudos to whoever hires these people. If it wasn't for the brief, but semi-frequent, feelings of unsafeness when I'm here, I would give this library a full 5 stars. read more

We're at that time of year in Minneapolis during which more and more pockets of the city slowly begin to resemble outtakes from "The Walking Dead." I got on the 12 bus the other day to go from The Lowry down to the Hennepin County Library, and saw people with such improbably shaped faces, hollowed out eyes, and defeated postures that I started to view the bus ride as a warped, mobile piece of public art. Two drunken louts antagonized the bus driver while a young mother played ratchet ass music from her phone at full volume. An elderly man with his mouth agape was so strangely contorted in his seat, it seemed he'd been screwed into it as if he were a macabre ornament; his wife, next to him with her limbs loose as a Muppet's, her head sunken into her lap, and her jacket draped over her, truly looked dead. It was 3 in the afternoon. Godspeed You Black Emperor could've scored that bus ride. So powerful. This was great prep for my time at the library, a building that looks like a spaceship that looks like a boat that looks like a spaceship? *Scooby Doo confused face* I love the place. Half the people in there have no want or need for books; another 25% are probably doing things on the public computers that even the NSA doesn't want to know. But if you can wade through the crowd of aimless people copping squats in the seating areas and the computer labs, you'll find a saintly and eager staff who are as helpful as they are patient. The resources are fairly abundant - I'm an archival nerd who likes to read back issues of newspapers, so I've been thrilled by the collection here. The higher up you go in the building, the more accommodating and quiet the study spaces become. The noticeable security presence is initially off-putting, but they do manage to keep the place relatively quiet, and sort out the riffraff before instances of bad behavior escalate into something much more disruptive. The selection of books and DVDs is impressive, and as long as you take the time to figure out the lay of the land, you can find good spots to read and work. And if I haven't made this place sound charming enough, there's a strip club right down the street. This city and its downtown, man. The most charitable and loaded description would be "unique." The Hennepin County Library is simultaneously your refuge from and reintroduction to the zombie apocalypse. If that kind of thing passes as ambience for you (it does for me), then this is the place for you to grab a book and get to reading. P.S. - Avoid the coffee shop on the main floor, it's a couple of steps south of mediocre. P.P.S. - Did I really just review the public library? Have I officially jumped the Yelp shark? This is such an incredible library. It deserves an entire list of awesome. 1. It is, in my humble opinion, the most beautiful building in Minneapolis, inside and out. The inside of the building is drenched in light, and it's spacious, and quiet, and comfortable. It makes me feel like I'm resting in a quiet birch tree grove on a mild, sunny day. Stop laughing you hater, it's true. 2. It is a cinch to bike to this place, or get there via public transit. I believe the light rail stop is ten feet from this place's door, and every time you blink there's a bus stopping outside. 3. Dunn Brothers. In the building. Caffeine + books is one of my favorite combinations on the planet. 4. The selection is solid. Need a book on feminist philosophy as it relates to sado/masochism? They've got it. Need something they don't have? Librarians are actually book magicians. 5. It is freaking awesome that they have such a cool-looking teen hangout. It looks like a place that I would actually frequent if I were still a teenager- instead of hanging out at Barnes and Noble, huffing but not buying books. read more

I'm a self-admitted nerd, and haven't found a Library I don't like, but Central Library is tops. Even if you're not into the whole reading thing, take a field trip to see the building. It's lovely, with tons of windows and natural lighting. There's a small gallery upstairs with rotating art exhibits that are always worth a visit. Getting there is easy - light rail, buses, and underground parking are all options. Love the Dunn Bros on the first floor too, and the library lets you bring in drinks. Free wifi, and more than enough computers that you can use for free (you just need a library card). Printing is available for a nominal fee. Support your local library, and check this place out! read more

If you're anything like me, halfway through a semester, you're sick of studying on campus and you've ran out of good study spots. This is a wonderful alternative. Minneapolis Central Library is filled with large floor-to-ceiling windows with lots of natural sunlight so you feel better about being cooped up in a library, studying your life away. It is an absolutely beautiful library and is located right in the middle of downtown Minneapolis. There are tables everywhere and several different floors. Whether you prefer the individualized cubbyhole type study desks, a larger table near windows, or a conference room which allows for group discussion, all of these are available. What's nice about these is you will also find outlets practically everywhere, so there is never a worry about that. There are many different aspects of this library to explore and many different areas to study. They even have a nice fireplace that you can sit around if you just want to enjoy reading a book, a play section for younger children, a piano room to practice your musical talents, newspapers, and several computers. The staff are extremely friendly and are very willing to help you out with anything you need, or even if you just want a book recommendation, they are a great resource for that as well. Though certain areas may be a bit noisier than other parts, I've never had a real issue with it and you will most certainly always be able to find an area that suits your sound preferences. In the entry of the library, there is also a Dunn Bros Coffee shop which closes pretty late on Monday-Thursday at 9:15 PM but a little earlier on weekends at 5:30 PM so if you ever need a sandwich or a quick caffeine boost in the midst of your studying, it's located right inside the library. Parking is available underground, but you have to pay by the hour which is unfortunate however, this library is located right outside of the light rail stop (Warehouse, Hennepin Avenue) so that is another alternative. In terms of the location of this library, it's located in such a wonderful spot! It's surrounded by many different bars, restaurants, and even Nicollet Mall. It's easy to go out and grab some lunch or dinner since there are so many nearby restaurants, or maybe even a drink if the studying is really getting to you. Nicollet Mall is also nearby which includes a Target in case you want to stop by to grab some snacks, all in walk-able distance. This is definitely one of my favorite libraries and I've been to quite a few- definitely worth checking out. read more

This library is dynamite. A futuristic, majestic library. It looks like it was made out of the same sandstone, steel and glass as Target Field. Its design is a bit strange, especially the overhang in front where water occasionally pours onto the stones below during rainfall. There's a garden area on the roof. The interior of the place is set up like some crazy modern art museum or something. There is a main interior lobby and then two stacks on either side of it, with funky staircases and the elevators from Robocop. The really amazing thing about the place is how much public space it houses to just chill, work, read, surf the web, whatever. I wish it had existed in this capacity when I was a student because it would have been a great place to work and study, even better than the student libraries. The location of the place is ideal, because it's easy to get to, but it's the 'Central' Library, so I guess that's redundant. The library also has a bookstore on the first floor by the coffee shop. They sell books and stuff that is permanently withdrawn from the library's collection for dirt cheap prices. I've found some good items in there. Also, right now they have a baseball exhibit, which, while nothing amazing, adds an additional dimension to the space, where they can host lectures and displays on a given topic. read more

This library is an architectural gem and a fantastic place to get some work done (if you can peel your eyes off of the stacks and cease the people-watching, that is.) It feels wrong to give a library a less-than-five-star review. This is the home of books, after all--a mecca of music, a haven for hardcovers, the palace of paperbacks...well, you get the idea. Libraries rock. This library, too, rocks. It's all shiny and new and it looks like it was built by IKEA. Such a pleasure it is to stand over a cool floor vent on a hot summer day while perusing page after page of magnificent reading material! But the problem I have with this library is that someone put too much form before too little function, making it unnecessarily difficult to use. Pet peeve: planting the beautiful birch trees WAY too close together outside the front of the library. It looks good the first year... and then they take turns dying off. They've already started the process. The metal ornamentation on the font of the library is perfectly peaked to collect water--leading to an improvised rain-spout right in front of the doors, and, in the winter, a deadly dash into the library where you avoid massive icicles. (To be fair, in the winter they always rope this off to prevent massive-icicle death...but really? Why not just, you know, avoid death-at-the-entrance?) The book return is on the opposite side of the library entrance--so you enter from the Nicollet side (or parking ramp) and you have to walk past the library entrance, all the way over to drop off your books, and then all the way back to enter the library. It's a small thing, but it's a continued annoyance (why not allow you to enter the library on both ends?). It's just a bunch of little design. . . thoughtlessnesses (is that a word? No? It is now.)... that lead to a more unpleasant library experience than they should--especially considering that said library is brand-spanking-new. Next time lets look at the library design with the practical, heavy user in mind. It's also worth noting that you can park free for 10 minutes while you drop off your books (and you can do this underneath the parking ramp). The meters outside are a totally unreasonable 8 minutes per quarter (considering that the drop-off and library entrance are so far apart, you're always going to need two quarters). read more

Best place downtown for sure. Spent many an hour here studying and waiting for buses during my ridiculous commute to the U. Great hangout space for teens upstairs, great quiet spots for spreading out your books. Chairs are definitely comfortable enough for a nap. Security does a wonderful job keeping the area silent and food-free. Awesome selection of books and DVDs, and the huge Hennepin library system can get you anything you need that is not at this particular location and deliver to the library for pick-up. Last but not least - the architecture is beautiful. I did a project for an architecture unit on Central Library - did you know there's a garden on the roof? Amazing, beautiful stuff. I guess I'm the only Yelp reviewer who is afraid of heights. This building here is ridiculously designed and is virtually unusable for anyone with height phobia issues. They have this giant waste of space hallway running through the center of the building and each floor (there's like 4 floors) has narrow ridiculous catwalks connecting each side of the building (across the giant meaningless hallway). They also have staircases and weird see-through elevators that ascend all the way to the top floor. Because of the sheer ridiculousness of this architecture, I have only explored the first floor. I refuse to walk across a 4 story catwalk to read some books. The old downtown Public Library which they tore down was far superior and had a wonderful Planetarium (this new one doesn't). It also did not have the absurd design with the crazy balconies, it had 2 floors and that was all it needed. And it had that fountain thing with the weird book-shaped sculpture in the front. I miss that. How dare they tear down that building and replace it with this balcony-laden abomination. read more

This library is my stomping ground. Huge selection (of course, its a library), they're really good about transferring things from other locations fast, and the building is BEAUTIFUL. My favorite part is the Dunn Bros on the first floor. I love finding a new good book and lounging in the coffee shop to read it. Big windows=sunshine and good people watching as well. I do wish it was connected to the skyway (even 2 blocks in Jan is a long way to trek), but I'm glad the hours changed and that they're now open on Sundays. Yeah public libraries rock! read more

Best library in the city, for sure. It has so much to offer. You can find a book or movie, use the web, or just spend some time people watching. There are tons of nooks and crannies for those of us that want to find a comfy secluded paradise for reading. No better way to spend a rainy day! I love the whole library system in Minneapolis. You have the ability to browse books online and reserve them for a specific location. No more driving to Southdale to grab Frankenstein... I now have all my books sent to Central so that I can grab them on my way to the bus. read more

Upfront - the Central libe loses a star because it's closed on Sunday and Monday, as are the rest of the libraries in Minneapolis. Get your act together, Twin Cities West. When it is open, the Central library is the coolest. I love walking up to it because it makes me proud to live here - such a neat building. And always full of people. I am one (of the few?) who still checks out books from the library, and I usually come here, even though I have a branch a few blocks from home. Just because Central is bigger though, doesn't mean the books I want are here. In fact they're usually checked out if they're recent. The secret, people, is HOLDS. Then you get an email when your books arrive. It's like Christmas! My most frequent reason for being at the library is to do work. I sit on the third floor by the windows and watch the traffic and bikers avoid each other on Hennepin. It's been a productive spot for me. I appreciate how well spaced the work tables are. Even if people take a phone call, we're far enough apart that it's not intrusive. Another plus are the computers. There are hundreds of public stations. Which is a good thing since they are at nearly full occupancy most of the day. If you're trying to do work, bring a laptop, since it's not nearly so peaceful "in the pit" as I call the computer areas(in my head). The one small complaint I have is that it takes me a while to find books. I guess they have maps but they don't all show where to find the call numbers - maybe I'm just used to instant information online, but maps are a pretty basic requirement. For the vehicularly enabled: parking is hard and/or expensive. Take the bus, ride your bike or walk unless you have patience and money to burn. read more

I used to go to story time here every once in a while, as it's fun to go to the big one, but I was usually disappointed by the performance. But they have a huge children's section, and with babies or toddlers they can play with the big cushy blocks and browse through the ships filled with board books. read more

Always a good trip to the central library! They have everything you could ever want. Magazines, movies, books, references, even a coffee shop for after you check out your books. I take the girls I nanny here, they're 9 and 12. They love the youth section, we spend a lot of time there. They have bean bags, tables, and computers. It's always a nice outing. I can get stuff done on my laptop while they read their manga and other books. We're both happy! read more

This has got to be the biggest library that I have visited this side of the Mississippi. The Librarians are very helpful; there are a wide variety of books on different subjects; I could spend the whole day here. However, some of the people hanging out here are pretty "shady", "ghetto", and "ratchet". Some people talk loudly and watch inappropriate videos in front of, dare I say not, kids!! The bathrooms are nasty and the aforementioned people loiter in them, doing "who knows what" in them. I also saw some guy attempt to steal a cell phone from a desk; he looked at me quickly, put the phone down, and scurried off. This library has the potential to be 5 stars, if the above issues were taken care of. read more
