If you are anywhere near the Empire Theatre with some time to spare, this small rare and second hand book shop is a treat to visit. Just look out for the big clock. There a books packed on shelves from floor to the high ceiling for the depth of the shop. Outside there is a 10p bookcase with some interesting titles. The sign above the door reads "Books purchased from Single Items to the Largest Library. All Subjects, All periods, 16th Century to Modern Paperbacks." They also purchase classical and jazz LPs and CDs but the first floor department is not open yet. There are all manor of books to browse from specialist subjects to old annuals. Henry Bohn is a mini second hand book shop that has surprisingly and most recently attracted my attention. It is a mystery that I bothered to walk in after so many years I've passed this shop. Outside the entrance currently has a collection of books on sale for as cheap as 10p each. I don't know anywhere else where you can buy books for 10p! Most of these books are in adequate condition and of course readable. Inside is a different story. There are stacks full of books that feature many genres such as classics like Shakespeare and plenty of other literature including poetry. Plus, if that's not enough to tempt you, then they have a variety of music CD's. For example, jazz, classical, blues and LP's too. All of these items are affordable and if you have any unwanted items, you can trade in for cash depending on the type of book and condition. This is what's great about the shop as both sides can benefit. In terms of the layout, it is rather narrow and the lighting is a bit dull. Other than that, you can't really argue much about the items they sell. There is something for everyone here and it could be your lucky day if you come across a valuable read. read more

After being moved from its original Lime Street location I thought this place was never going to resurface. But oh boy, has it. I rediscovered it on London Road this week and the place is now well and truly, wall to wall, ceiling to floor, decked out with every category of books you can think of, from Shakespeare to Astronomy, and it's all clearly set out. The first thing that hits you on entering is that tell-tale musty second-hand book smell. Even the stairs had books lining them when I went in, possibly a safety hazard but heyho, it all adds to the character! Where did this place come from? Is it one of those places that has always been here and only crusty old professor types can see it? Walking in was a bit like entering a set from Ghostbusters particularly Ray's occult second hand book store. Nothing quite that interesting here unfortunately, just second hand books on the usual topics of history, art or science. However the secret to using these shops is of course whether you are a dedicated book hunter searching for something in particular in which case the very dedicated staff - who were arguing about one book's classification when I came in - will be very useful or of course there are huge well stacked shelves which can provide a lucky dip if you just want to discover a whole new author or genre. read more

Henry Bohn Books has been there for many years but I only visited recently for the first time. Henry Bohn Books is a stereotypical second hand book shop. It is pretty old fashioned and its stacked from floor to ceiling with intriguing old books of all different types. It has that unmistakable musty, yet not unpleasant, smell of old books. There is a huge range of books available here from classic novels to childrens books. Everything is very inexpensive, even the most expensive books are usually less that £5. Calling all book lovers.... Henry Bohn is a second-hand bookshop that has been providing locals with tales of awe and wonder for years. The original shop was on Seel Street then Lime Street and has now relocated to a different premises on Seel Street. Wandering around the shop however, you could assume it's been there for decades as every shelf and surface is covered with well-thumbed paperbacks and hardbacks. There's every category of book you could want from biography to local history but my favourite section is of course, the fiction. Alongside previous Booker and Orange Prize nominees, I found some rare novels by late British publishers like Ringpull and Payback Press. read more

This is a fabulous second hand book shop, particularly if you love old books and hard covers. It's wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling books. Some of the shelves are so tall that you can't reach the top even with the little step stool provided ... My favourite sections are the crime fiction section (lovely old dime novels, and Agatha Christie galore), the classic novels (not a one you don't have you can't find here), and the children's section mostly composed of very old, very colourful hardback fairy tales and nursery rhymes. I do wish they would carry a few more paperbacks and modern books, though. I'm an old book fanatic, don't get me wrong. I read and decorate with old books! But sometimes it's comforting to have a ready paperback novel in your bag, and being a poet, I'm especially looking for some more modern books of poetry to better study the current climate and market. (Being a starving writer, I can barely afford a new book a couple of times a year.) The prices here can range from very cheap to very expensive. It depends on what books you want. There is always a small selection of bargain books by the door, and sometimes there are more boxes of cheap books in various places inside. The average book ranges around £1.50-£4.00, but some of the antique hard covers can range from £10-25. read more

Fear ye not, literary lovers of a bargain. Although the shop had to cease trading so the monstrosity of concrete that it traded can be ripped down it now occupies a grand position at the bottom of London Road and in what was home for over seventy years of another Liverpool institution- Browns, the watchmakers. but that's another review- A grander home but still the same wonderful choice and service but most of all at sensible prices- students take note, get there early before it's all snapped up. With luck and a fair wind John Bohns will see out many years in this lovely premises and so they should. read more

This shop is THE precusor to heaven, for that's where I thought I had been transported. Old-fashioned (in the best sense of the meaning), with the accompaniament of a Mozart symphony - what could be more pleasing. The range of books is staggering. I was particularly impressed by the amount of stock on the history of the American Civil War. Wish I had known this when I was writing an essay many years ago and found it difficult to obtain such books cheaply in Britain. Unlike the real heaven, I shall be returning there regularly. Any visitor to the area should make this shop a must visit venue, you will not leave without a purchase. In all a wonderful bookshop which you leave feeling all is well in the World. Roger read more

I only really noticed this shop today as I was passing by on the bus. My daughter & I went in and omg I love it. Straight away you get the smell of musty old books. I love that smell. If this place had a coffee bar in it and bean bags I think i'd stay there all day. It has a huge variety of books literally stacked from floor to ceiling. It's a book lovers dream.
