The more research I put into local artists, the more I find source material from the Richmond area. That includes numerous artists that are from the Golden Era of Indiana Artists as well as the book written by the RAM curator Shawn Dingwerth. This free museum is open on Tuesdays through Saturday from 10 to 5. Parking is free in the lot on the north side of the building and on the street. The museum is attached to the school, so it has made due with size constraints and old building problems, but will be undergoing some large construction/renovation in 2017 to ensure better lighting (the current UV emitted by old lights is damaging) and climate control so that when space becomes available, more paintings will be able to be displayed. On my visit, the staff was very helpful and I had the opportunity to talk with the curator which I found quite interesting since I had read his book about the Richmond Group (local artists from the late 1800's to early 1900's) the week before. There are several galleries that have a theme for each: Ceramics, Contemporary, "Golden Age Artists", Portraits, and an exhibition hall. The lobby holds some of the large sculptures and paintings as well. The museum has an extensive program to reach out to local children to give them the opportunity to see the art first hand and learn. Programs are tailored to the age levels and focus on introducing different styles and cultures with each visit. The works themselves are truly representative of the different styles of art and serve as a time capsule of local artists that may be under appreciated by the current generation. Along with the Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute and the Haan Mansion Museum in Lafayette, the RAM has preserved our State's cultural best. The National Model Aviation Museum is the largest model aviation museum in the world. Who knew that Muncie held such a treasure? At this very specific museum, you will see model aircraft of all sorts, memorabilia, equipment, and even a space for children with simulators. I would keep your expectations low for the children's area, though. Other than two simulators, there is not much for children to touch and explore. But if you're an adult who loves model airplanes, you will have a great time here. I was told that people who study model airplane history will sometimes come here to go through the collection of books, magazines and manuals that the museum owns. There's a whole library that you can explore, if that's your thing. This is a neat place to visit if you're in Muncie, simply because there's nothing else like it in the area.

But it's a fun hobby, and there are some very impressive models out there- and some crossover to homebuilding planes and to military drones, etc., so it's pretty interesting. The museum is outstanding. Covers things from the Wrights and others building models to test theories, etc., through the golden age of, say, the '30s through '50s, up to the current new golden age with jets and helos and a range of planes from hard-to-crash-and-break entry models to ones that cost as much as a new car. Loads of examples, all well cared for and displayed. A surprise around every corner. Not huge, but big enough to spend a couple of hours. There's a workshop you can see through big windows, and a library you can use. Plenty of models and trinkets and clothes in the gift shop. Well worth a visit if you are at all into aviation.

The Hancock County Historical Society is a hidden treasure that houses local artifacts and history…read morefor the county. The building is a beautiful and original old church from the mid 1800s located in Riley Park with other preserved buildings. Inside, the old handcrafted oak woodwork transports visitors back in time. The staff is wonderful, engaging and passionate about history. They provide tours of the museum and host lectures monthly. The museum is open afternoons from April through October. The hours are generally 1:00 - 5:00. Michael Kesner is the director and he is just about the friendliest and most knowledgable Hoosier you could ever meet. The museum contains examples of clothes, photos, farming and homestead implements from the 1800s through 1950s. Artifacts are on show cases with written descriptions. They produce a monthly newsletter with stories of local history and are always looking for new members. They was no admission fee when we were there but they have a donation box out. The building is fully accessible with close dedicated parking. There is a small restroom on site. The Historical Society is a fun adventure back in time and a must do on your visit to Greenfield. I was so mesmerized that I forgot to take photos.

Billed as Indiana's largest four day festival, the Riley Days Festival has been going on for a long…read moretime (I remember going in the late '80's when I lived in New Pal.) I had forgotten how large this event had become. They close down the National Road (US 40) and State Road 9 the first weekend of October each year. So, you can imagine that this event, which covers multiple blocks is one you need to be willing to walk a fair distance to get to. (Note: A shuttle does run from the County Fairgrounds for those who can't walk as far.) I found some street parking several blocks from one corner of the event. Tents line each side of the streets. Some house small business items. Some promote churches or politicians. Other vendors forego the tents and set up State Fair type food wagons of just about any type of food that can be eaten without a knife and fork (or plate). And the place is packed. You can't hurry through to get a quick view of what is here. The crowd meanders and stops unexpectedly, so even if you know where a particular vendor is, you have to allow time to get there. And when you do, there will most likely be a line. Seriously, if you can't make a sale here, you probably should just close your business. People were stopping at just about every tent. I am not sure what activities and entertainment they have since I wasn't planning on staying for any of those. If you like browsing through a huge number of tents to look for something unique or interesting, then you will probably like attending this festival. Just make sure you bring your best walking shoes. The Riley Festival is a big event every year for the town of Greenfield. The town itself has grown…read moreover the years. They have some very nice restaurants, car dealerships, bowling, a theater, and a Movie Theater. Look for the special chocolate shop and antique store. Now, back to the festival. I am a music lover since I have played piano and guitar for 59yrs. I also sing. What I was getting to is that I saw 4 different platforms where there was live entertainment. Some was rock and roll and some was very mellow. Something for everyone. There was food trucks and booths all around the square. The smells wafting through the air and our nostrils drove us crazy. As we walked through the crowd and twisted lines we tried to decide which place we would settle on. Tony set his mind on a BBQ place and got Potato Salad for a side. That was $10.00. It was also a joke. There was about three tablespoons of pulled pork on...wait for it...on a hot dog bun!! He also had about 4 small spoons of potato salad. I decided on a plate of Fried Veggies for $8.00. They were ok, but not the best I've had and super greasy. We walked around some more, ran into friends, bought some Christmas gifts, finished shopping. Decided we wanted the Apple Dumplings with Ice Cream. Well, those were the best thing we had!! I definitely have to learn to make them. Next time I will skip the food and go straight to the apple dumpling booth. There's only one so you can't miss it. The Cakehole is here with many flavors of cupcakes. Don't miss out on the best cupcakes ever!!

We love Riley Days!! The first Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Sun of October Greenfield hosts a street…read morefestival in honor of famous poet James Whitcomb Riley. Hundreds of street vendors set up booths on US 40, State Rd 9 and several surrounding streets. You'll find lots of arts / crafts, holiday decor, candles, woodwork, metalwork, cookware, clothing, scarves, house decor, purses, bedding, hats / sunglasses, toys, and candy. In addition to the product vendors there are probably 30-40 food options - mostly fair food style trucks. If you've ever been to Riley Days you know the shish-ka-bobs in front of the courthouse lawn will have a long line but are worth the wait! I also love the Papageorge Gyro truck, BBQ options, and don't forget the banana split elephant ears or pineapple whip ice cream. There is also live entertainment on the south side of the Courthouse lawn in a gazebo and across the street from there an additional entertainment tent is set up. You'll find everything from singing, dancing, clogging, fashion shows, a kids beauty pageant, and live bands. Also there is a large kids area with several blown up bouncy houses, fair style games, and face painting. On Friday morning the local elementary schools host the Parade of Flowers where kids line up and place flowers on the statue of Riley in town ( half endearing, half creepy in my opinion ) but tradition none the less. Saturday morning is another parade with local businesses and a Queen from the local high school being crowned. Come check all this action out! Parking can be a tad hectic but mostly free. Check the surrounding side streets of South and North but $5-$10 pay parking is available in a few places as well.

Then this is THE place is for you. Disclaimer: I'm a Jayhawk, so I *think* I know ball, but believe me, Indiana is THE authority on high school basketball. There is no better treasure chest of names & faces, photos & artifacts, and timeless displays than the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Dr. James Naismith may have invented the game, but Indiana perfected the art, etching memories into our sports conscience. Some names you might recognize, some you'll definitely know, and others you may not realize had Hoosier State roots. From the time you enter and get to watch a short film on the state's rich history of high school hoops (appropriately titled 'Only In Indiana'), you are ferried down multiple avenues in time. From the miracle of tiny Milan HS in 1954 (the basis for the movie 'Hoosiers') through the last all-school tournament in the 1990s, the moments are all here. Watch footage of Bobby Plump's championship-winning shot in 1954 or listen to John Wooden's coaching talks. Take the time to peruse the early days of Branch McCracken or the Franklin Wonder Five or just marvel at the moments captured from the youth of Robertson, Bird, or Alford. This isn't so much a museum as it is a cathedral, an epicenter of hardwood achievement. If basketball had a Vatican, then this is the apse & altar on which to pay homage. A handful of greats are memorialized - in stained glass, mind you - while the enshrinees are housed in a wing all their own. This state pulses basketball through its veins and the passion isn't only seen, it is felt, with a fervor that can't be matched. Admission is $5 and parking is right next to a New Castle high school, so there's lots of space. There is a billboard on I-70 that reads 'In 49 other states, it's just basketball...BUT THIS IS INDIANA' and if that doesn't pique your interest, then you're not trying. Take the time to walk these corridors. See what you might remember. Learn about that which you may not have known or forgotten. But mostly, just pay tribute to the greatest collection of high school basketball history & achievement that you could ever find.

Their theater shows a 12-minute video about what it means to play high school basketball in Indiana and it made me cry. The staff is extremely friendly. My only nitpick is some of their new interactive exhibits don't work very well, but the staff admits upfront that they are still working out the kinks with the new technology. While you're at the Hall of Fame, check out a basketball game at New Castle High School, the biggest basketball gym in the country, which is next door!
