I've never written a Yelp review, but after reading the last review I felt compelled to write of my experience because it is a world away from what that person experienced. I don't think the fact that you weren't married or had previous children was a reason for being turned away, but I do know that Dr. Shapiro has been full for years. I, myself, came to see her as a lesbian who had 4 children through donor insemination and she was always fine with it. Over my years with her she has been super attentive to all of my concerns and has seen me through some mental health crises/suicide attempt, caring for my very aged mother, the suicide of my son, and most recently, my transitioning to male. Although she's never had a trans patient before, she has taken over prescribing my hormone therapy and has been instrumental in getting me the letters I've needed for gender affirming surgery. I am beyond grateful for the years I've had with her and dread the day she retires (which I know is no longer on the distant horizon). I don't really think she needs any 5 star reviews since as I mentioned her practice is full, but I felt I had to offer a counter opinion to the individual that felt they were turned away because of having an "alternative" (?) lifestyle. From the friendly greeting at the front desk to the very professional doctor who decided I was even sicker than I felt, I was in and out in less than an hour. I left with a nice set of instructions for my own care, and when my symptoms worsened two days later I returned and was (again) treated with empathy and understanding. Oh, and a prescription for strong antibiotics and bedrest! It's nice to know we have such a facility here in Bham, and that there's another option besides the ER when things are urgent but not to the point of dialing 9-1-1.

I probably won't follow up, but I wonder, if nothing else, about statistics. Did no-one want to 'count' me?

After calling and telling them (who has his chart mind you) about why he was sent there, they said he needed to go to the ER BEFORE they would see him. Seriously? Now we need ungodly coats of an er visit before a Dr will see us? So, they haven't even seen him yet and have given garbage quality of care and equally crappy service. Reviews from the last year on Google show patients 20, 30 and 50+ years are running for the hills due to how far this place has declined. Due yourselves a favor and don't even bother.

And he had the audacity to use those scare tactics on me. Let me just reiterate that. I was already feeling discouraged about my health problem and I was going to this provider for help. I was complying, trying multiple medications that I could not afford, doing the lifestyle changes they recommended, and they felt as though I was not taking it seriously and made me feel awful about myself. Every time I saw Sarah after that, she was extremely hostile with me and would not give me the time of day. As a practice they are completely untrustworthy. I have a friend who have brought in their infant and were given the wrong vaccine. I have friends that have also attempted to seek care from this office and also felt like they were not given the time of day or talked down to. Not only does she talk down to patients, Sarah also talks down to the support staff. And like several other reviews, getting a referral sent was a nightmare. And calling to the office is a nightmare. To get to the point, I don't trust these providers and I will never return to Fairhaven Integrative Health and I strongly do not recommend this clinic to anyone.

I understand that physicians get behind for a myriad of reasons, but if they are running late, the office should give you a call and let you know so you have the option to reschedule. This is not a unique circumstance, although it is the longest. I have been made to wait for inordinately long periods of time many times over the years. No longer. I do not recommend NSFM. It seems as though they are more focused on patient volume than patient satisfaction.

From the kind receptionist who patiently explained the paperwork, to Mary in pre-op who took the time to walk me through everything and put me at ease, to the nurses who cared for me so warmly and seamlessly every interaction reflected genuine kindness. Even with so many patients moving through each day, your office never feels impersonal. That really stands out. I especially appreciated my doctor checking in multiple times to reintroduce himself and make sure I felt informed and comfortable. Thank you all for the compassion and professionalism you show. Did I not know how to contact one of the urgent care clinics (I did see after that they had these but not open til 1pm). Did I not know that I could get Azo at any drug store? From what I understand this is just to help with the discomfort but doesn't exactly treat anything. Maybe she was having a bad day. I don't know. But I wonder why people go into this line of work if they just diminish your reason for being there?
