Perfect start to another road trip day. Woke up desperately looking for coffee to start our day when we stumbled across this little mom n pops diner type stop and decided to go in for some breakfast as well. There was only 1 lady working, running the show (other girl was out sick) I'm pretty sure she was wearing an invisible cape cause she rocked it all by herself, cooking, cleaning and taking orders, etc. DELICIOUS food, so so affordable and so incredibly quick. I think we took longer to finish our coffees than we did with our overall start to finish eating experience. Highly recommend if you're passing through, although it was definitely a local regulars spot as well. read more

Traveling home, McDonald's had "technical difficulties ". So, we found Herrings. Great small town, great people and good food. The basic ingredients that make our country great. I had the Pile Up and my wife had Biscuits and gravy. The portions were huge and tasty. Our server was super nice. All in all, if you are in the area and hungry come here. read more

Stopped in for breakfast on our trip from Dallas to Denver. Directions took us to the Herring Bank but it was just in the other side of the building. They had a standard diner breakfast menu and everything tasted great! Service was pleasant and the coffee was hot. Water didn't taste terrible so that was a big plus!! Thanks to other Yelp reviews, we decided to stop for breakfast at the Herring Coffee Shop. It is smaller than I thought, but the nice people and good food was worth the stop! We had the biscuits and gravy, which was super flavorful, the eggs and bacon plate, and the best part, we tried the fried pies. Holy cats, batsman.... they were good! Especially the buttermilk one! All of the food was delicious, the price was right and the service was quick. If you are ever in Vernon, check this place out! read more

Great diner in beautiful old marble bank. Farm fresh eggs make the best omelet's tons of meats and veggies and homemade salsa. Tables of locals getting the plate sized pancakes, "dump"and biscuits and gravy. The couple minutes off the highway is worth it. Coffee and 3 egg omelet was $10 with a takeaway coffee. I'm not sure why we don't go here more often, but I love this place. It's your standard breakfast diner food but the atmosphere is great. They are always friendly and there are always friendly, local faces drinking coffee inside. This is the perfect small-town establishment. We found this little small town gem on yelp and decided to give it a go. The food was amazing and the staff was so friendly and accommodating! Our whole family left feeling like it was the best restaurant experience we had ever had! They had sold out of fried pies that morning but the cook volunteered to make us fresh, from scratch fried pies. Oh. My. Goodness! They were amazing! A very unique mom and pop diner located inside the historic Herring Bank. The GPS takes you to the front of the bank. The diner is located on the backside. I was a little apprehensive about it at first because there was only one car in front of the diner. The hubby and I decided to check it out anyway since it had such good ratings on Yelp. Inside is nothing fancy-only about eight chairs and tables and booths that have seen better days. We had been there only a few minutes when it began to fill up. It is obviously a favorite hangout of the locals. Food was regular breakfast foods...you could see "mom" cooking the food. You could order ale cart which allows you to build your own breakfast. The server was very friendly and prices were good. Directions to the bathroom were "Take the elevator to the second floor and it's on your left." That was a fun adventure because it let us check out the historic building. Overall, I'm glad we stopped. It was a homey place. If I lived in Vernon I would be a regular. Hopefully the next time we drive through it will be lunch time because I want to try out the Fried Bologna sandwich. If you find yourself driving through Vernon, you definitely should stop. read more

We had seven folks and they found space for us in a few booths. Food was great. Atmosphere was total small town America and lots of conversation. This was my favorite place in Vernon! The jalapeno popper bacon burger was the best thing I put in my mouth all week next to the chocolate fried pie! I was in town for a conference and thanks to the reviews stopped in with coworkers. Everyone left happy and while it was a small place the food was excellent and the owner, Adam, and waitress, Marsha, were a delight! I wanted breakfast with crispy hash browns at a "Mom and Pop" type place. I remembered seeing such a place when my husband and I were walking around Vernon. We wound up at the Herring Coffee Shop. I knew I was in the right place when I saw the vinyl covered stools at the counter. The board out front announced the lunch special. The dry erase board inside touted fried pies and house-made ice cream. We needed real money, so we had to hit up the atm across the street. When we got inside, we asked if we could still get breakfast, because it was 11am. WWII ads are plastered across the base of the counter. Army men, hobby horses and Life magazines reside in the windows. I got crispy hash browns, a thick cut of ham, some eggs with runny yolks, and toast from the grill. If you're looking for the proverbial "greasy spoon", *this is it*. People came in after us and got a burger. It looked huge, thick and juicy. One lady got some fried pies. We got a couple of fried pies to go. Definitely not my grandmother's fried pies. That would be too perfect! This place is old-school-Texas, coffee shop.
