So, first and foremost, it is extremely convenient by bike or car! However, when I walked in for the first time today, I was even more excited. You walk in to a very small and welcoming reception area with no line! (I was able to deal with all of that 'initial paperwork stuff' within 10 minutes.) Since the clinic has multiple departments, including family health, urgent care and chiropractor, they ask you to wait in the area designated to your department. Again, we were the only ones in the place and were able to avoid that mass waiting room like usual. The waiting area had large open windows to watch the happenings on Chicago Ave.; a nice change from dull white walls. The actual walls are decorated with tasteful artwork! I love the actual exam rooms! They have two doors so that the nurses/doctors can access them from their own office area rather than the public entrance. It eliminates so many people walking around and the uncomfortable feeling that someone is dying because it reminds you of that episode of ER or Grey's Anatomy... I digress. The staff was extremely pleasant! They made me feel welcome and calm. Everyone explained information in detail, but without sounding like a pretentious 4th year med student. The nurse even showed me information (and pictures) on the internet during our appointment so that I had a better understanding - helpful and educational! I can totally see this being my new primary care provider soon. Great location! Great facility! AND, it is located right next to the Town Hall Tap and Pumphouse Creamery - two of my favorites! Doctor, lunch and dessert all in one short trip. I love it!

I checked into the Urgent Care at Park Nicollet, where a very helpful person asked if I'd like to check out Smart Care. She said it was a new service and virtually no wait (v. the long line at Urgent Care). I thanked her and trudged a short way down the hall. Honestly, that moment likely changed my life, or at least my health. I was treated quickly and expertly and have since made Smart Care my primary provider. I've stopped in for vaccinations, treatment for muscle strains, more stupid sinus infections and have always felt that I received the best care possible. I can easily reach out to them through the MyChart website or with a quick phone call to see if an office visit is necessary. The whole team is friendly and knowledgeable. I always feel as if my concerns are heard and acknowledged. I recommend that anyone looking for a primary care team check this out!

SmartCare by Park Nicollet offers much lower prices, but dramatically limits you to providers within the Twin Cities metro area. Even then, many physicians (including my long-time primary care physician) who work for Park Nicollet are not part of the SmartCare program, which tends to rely on Physician's Assistants (PAs) for primary care needs. I've never been impressed by doctors with diplomas, at least outside of specific surgical expertise. I know many PAs whose expertise rivals those of general practitioners. For 90% of us, you don't need a doctor to diagnose your sore throat and prescribe meds. (In fact, an increasing amount of primary care is *finally* being made accessible through virtual visits.) It's been an active year for me, medically at least: two total knee replacements; a few asthma complications that required medication adjustments; a fun visit to the foot doctor to see if he could help level out my leg lengths after the first knee surgery; pre-op and PT visits for the TKRs; a lovely colonoscopy; and a few other visits I think. All within 10 miles of my Plymouth residence. Next year I probably won't go interact with the healthcare system more than a few times. Only nitpick: The appointment scheduling lines are consistently understaffed to handle call volume, so wait times of 30 minutes are not unusual. Ideally you can use the website to schedule an appointment, but sometimes you need more assistance.

Spoiler: it was more like starring in a low-budget horror film, minus the Oscar nomination. The nurse, with all the urgency of someone microwaving leftover fish, jabbed me with the so-called numbing solution. "You'll be fine in a minute," she chirped, as if pain receptors were instant-off switches. One Mississippi, two Mississippi... oh look, the scalpel was already out. I didn't even have time to blink before the doctor decided, slice. The pain was immediate, cosmic, like my soul was being evicted through that incision. I felt everything, down to the tragic soundtrack of my own internal screaming. When it was finally over -- which felt roughly three centuries later -- I staggered out, clutching my dignity. The drive home was an out-of-body experience where I nearly blacked out at every stoplight, but sure, it was all "routine." If Yelp had a section for medical trauma reviews, this one would read: Five stars for efficiency, zero stars for waiting five seconds for the numbing to actually work.

She was so judgmental, argumentative, and completely unwilling to help. Extremely expensive visit. I called several times even with my insurance company on the line just trying to get a simple billing code reviewed. The representative was dismissive, rude, and acted like helping patients wasn't part of her job. She refused to escalate the issue or connect me to anyone who could actually review the problem and i even asked her for an email address so I can personally reached out to the appropriate person and this still said no" she said there is nothing to review, is there anything I can let you with? I kept silence and she have a good day. I said ok, but I need to be heard and my COMPLAINT still needs to be resolved . I've never been treated with such disregard when just trying to handle a medical bill. It felt like that lady only cares about collecting her paychecks, not helping patients. I truly hope Allina management listens to these recorded calls and holds their staff accountable. Patients deserve respect and transparency, not attitude and avoidance

I went to see Dr. Martinez for my annual physical for the first time, anxious and excited to meet the new doctor I picked. I made the mistake of assuming that my time with her would be similar to the many physicals I had before.Unfortunately, things turned sour the moment I saw her. My experience with my previous doctor was always about my care, and her full attention was on me to examine me and answer all the questions I had during the ~30 minute physical exam every year. There was nothing I couldn't ask her in that time that would trigger a different billing code other than an annual physical.Dr. Martinez immediately made my visit's focus about billing, wanting to change my appointment to an acute visit instead of a physical because I had questions and updates about my health--which was just standard practice between my previous doctor and me. I didn't have any new symptoms that had not been discussed with other doctors before, but somehow I got billed for both a physical and also an acute 30-minute office visit. My whole visit was 30 minutes long, which included my wait time while she was running in and out, wait time for labs, and the lab work itself. So even if she interpreted my general health questions and updates as something outside the scope of a physical, I'm not sure how she could bill me for a full physical and a 30-minute consult when I saw her for 20 minutes max--and I'm being very generous with that estimate. She was mean, argumentative, completely unhelpful, condescending, and used split billing as a predatory billing practice. She is the definition of how to take care out of healthcare.
