It was a hiking trip and I was afraid that I will lose my passport so I only brought my drivers licenses and a digital copy of passport. However, the lady at the counter didn't say that the copy would work. Maybe we communicated in English and it's not her first language, it took her a long time for her to ask for the digital copy and accept it. I was to pay $428.28 USD for the week when I picked up the car. There was no reference to payment in Swiss Francs. When I picked up the car in June, Europcar charged me 379 CHF (I now suspect the equivalent value of $428.12 of Swiss Francs in January 2025). That sum (379 CHF) converted to $479.93 because of the devalued dollar. Now, I can well understand having to pay in Swiss Francs if my contract called for payment in Swiss Francs, and I would have done so without a thought. But my contract was in US Dollars only; there was never a reference anywhere in the contract to Swiss Francs; and I never agreed to pay Swiss Francs. Both Europcar and I agreed in a binding contract for payment in USD of $428.12. Long story short, I was taken for $50 dollars. This is a relatively small amount, but it is the principal of the matter, and this speaks volumes about the character of this company. I expected Europcar to be something much more than an extremely small and petty enterprise. Very disappointed!

There was no one around, no nearby stores, and no traffic on the road. I checked the SOS function in the car, but it was not active. To my surprise, I also discovered that the vehicle had no spare tire, which could have resolved the issue immediately. I am unsure why no spare tire was provided, as this would have greatly alleviated the problem. Stranded on the roadside at approximately 1:00 am, I contacted the local police for assistance. Despite several attempts, I was unable to reach Europcar's customer service or the provided contact number (+41-044-8044646). Eventually, the police arranged for a tow truck. As a tourist unfamiliar with the area, it was extremely difficult to communicate with the driver and navigate the situation.

The invoice was in German and I signed it at the airport without looking after I was assured by the clerk that $31 is the total amount that would be added to my bill. Instead, the clerk added some alleged winter features which anyone would suppose to be included as a standard, since I rented the car in January in Switzerland and being charged for some "special " winter package is ridiculous. The pickup was not in a tropical destination. I'm still trying to get my money back with the help of American Express.

Beware! Avis scammed me out of $4,000!…read more I rented a car for 3 weeks from Avis. I declined the ~$70 per day insurance. The car I was given was in very poor condition: lots of body damage, missing door seals making it very noisy on the highway. The agent told me that the car was in poor condition and not all the damage was logged and suggested that I could take pictures but it wasn't completely necessary because they were aware of the state of the car. It was very late in the evening and I was exhausted after a long day of travel so I foolishly didn't take any pictures. When I returned the car I was billed $4,000 for a variety of tiny dings around the car that were very clearly related to a variety of small incidents, no doubt over the lifetime of the car. I did appeal this. The appeal was denied on the basis that without pictures I couldn't prove that the damage was preexisting. I asked for any pictures of the car before I rented it so that I could show the damage _was_ preexisting, but was ignored. I also asked if the appeal staff could talk to the agents in Geneva familiar with the car. I was ignored again. Overall, I had a very sub-par car for my rental period and then was basically scammed out of $4,000. Needless to say that I will never rent from Avis again and I'd definitely recommend avoiding them.

I noticed it the next day and drove back to the airport to have it updated which was a major inconvenience to the start of my trip as I had already left Zurich area. This was brushed off by the associate without acknowledging the subsequent issues this mix-up could have caused if I drove a car that wasn't logged appropriately on their end. Second, after the car was returned and already invoiced- I received an email stating that there was 'damage' along the wheel arch which was classified as 'scratch down to primer.' This is inaccurate as the wheel arch of that specific model is made of plastic and there is no paint/primer there. Rather than providing clear pictures of the 'damage' substantiating their claim, they are automatically charging me $600+. This lack of accountability and poor customer service are reasons why I will not rent from this company again.

Instead, they offered me a bigger SUV, but only if I paid an extra 60 CHF per day, which I refused because I wanted the same price I originally booked or a similar vehicle without extra charges. Then they told me I would have to wait 3 hours for a similar car. I agreed, but after only 1 hour they called me back saying they found a "better car." When I returned, the car they offered was actually smaller and not even equivalent to what I originally booked. At that point, I lost trust and requested a full refund because this felt very misleading. The manager agreed and told me I would receive a refund confirmation email within 1 hour. However, it has now been over 7 hours and I have not received any confirmation. This is the worst car rental experience I have ever had. Poor communication, misleading information, and unfulfilled promises. I do not recommend Sixt Zurich Airport at all.
