If you prefer a smaller more intimate tour that provides a personal experience you will not forget than I would definitely recommend Hey Captain. They have small boats that accommodate up to 12 people I believe (I believe you can rent the whole boat as well) which is a perfect size for an interactive tour which is what they provide. The entire staff that greeted us at the dock were fantastic and everyone said good morning or began a conversation with you. I think there were a total of 7 people on our tour and very comfortable. They provided blankets as it was a bit chilly and a top should it rain. They also offered beverages such as wine, beer, and soda which was great! Our captain was Sebastian (aka SeaBass) who was GREAT. Very informative with many many facts, history and information on the structures, buildings, boats and ships, etc. He was very interactive with all of our group and remembered all our names and origins. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the time on the canals. We also took a large boat canal tour the next day and while it was nice and informative, it was a recording of the information and not nearly as informative. When we arrived in Copenhagen, we saw the big canal boats. My husband said, "Is that what we'll be doing later?" I was so happy that I was able to say, "No!" . No better way to see Copenhagen's canals! Spring for the slightly more expensive, DEFINITELY MORE INTIMATE experience. Even it's just you traveling alone or you don't have enough people to fill the boat yourselves, it's the least touristy way to see the must see sights/experience the canals. The guides are superb, and they may even let you drive the boat at some point! Equally important: you can buy beer on the boat. read more

I came to Copenhagen with my dad and aunt. While we were here, we were told to do a canal cruise. We parked and walked up to the wicked cool, retro blue van and bought our tickets for the next trip. All aboard with Victor and we were on our way. Victor had us all introduce ourselves so we could all be friends for the next hour which helped since we were in a smaller group of people. He offered complimentary beverages for everyone as well. Throughout our trip, Victor showed us a lot of cool landmarks along the canal and gave a detailed history of each piece along with the history of the city itself. We knew for sure that we wanted to take a boat tour in Copenhagen. There were two main options I saw: The big boats with what seem like a hundred people, or Hey Captain with smaller, new and stylish boats that hold up to 12 people. I'm very happy we went with this option, and highly recommend it. Although this option is more expensive than the bus-boats, I think it's totally worth it (and honestly, compared to how expensive everything is in Copenhagen, I think this is great deal). The tour was one of the highlights of our trip. It was relaxing, laid back, informative and intimate. I wanted to do it again the following day! Pros: great new boats, comfortable, intimate, laid-back, drinks included, great captain, informative, good route. Cons: Nothing. Sure, we thought about taking a generic, overcrowded canal boat tour, but I am so glad that we went with this intimate company. With no more than 10 people on the boat tour with you and a knowledgeable driver, you're sure to have a more memorable experience. One of the Highlights of the Trip! Incredible tour of the canals and city of Copenhagan. We got to see all the different areas of the city and the guide was an architecture student so he knew all about the history of the buildings new and old. There were complimentary alcoholic beverages, beer, wine, Glogg, and soda. It was November but they came prepared providing blankets and other items to keep us warm. I even got to drive the boat for a little bit (with the captains permission of course)! Overall a great time and I would highly recommend springing the extra couple dollars for this tour. We had the extreme good fortune to find this company on our one day stopover in Copenhagen. We contacted Joel to see if there might be an earlier tour we might catch that was not listed online. Sebastian responded within mere minutes and indicated that we could go on an earlier tour, allowing us to easily make our early evening flight. We had no problem finding them and their cute Volkswagen bus along the waterfront and were so happy that they allowed us to stow our gear while we took their tour. Coincidentally, we got to ride with Captain Sebastian (not the same Sebastian who got us on the early tour and checked us in) who hailed from the same part of the US as we did. We had beautiful sailing weather, lovely travelers and calm waters. All the things you hope for but cannot plan. What made this excursion so extraordinary was the boat, their attention to details (chilled wine or beer, waters and soft drinks) and their staff. Sebastian possesses that easy going ability to connect with everyone and a real excitement about showing others his favorite sites in Copenhagen. His exuberance is contagious and made us wish we had more time in this beautiful city. We know we will return one day and will take a longer tour, as we just barely scratched the surface with this one our tour. I just can't say enough good things about my experience in late August with Hey Captain. The online booking process was very easy, and when I showed up near the boat dock, I gave my name, as I had prepaid online. Our guide was Nana (see photos), an architecture student, and she was great. She imparted a lot of knowledge, not only about the history of Copenhagen, but also about the buildings and how the architecture has evolved. The boat is small, could have held 10-12 persons, but we had only five of us, all first-timers to the city, and she was very interactive, answering our many questions. The wine and beer were free and the boat was well-stocked with these and with lots of water (still and sparkling). We got lucky today. First off, our captain Sebastian was an awesome guy and really knowledgeable of the area. He took us to some actual hidden gems of the city. That was also what the tour was called so it lived up and then some. Even luckier we happened to be the only booked for this tour so it was just the three of us, me, my wife Taryn and our close friend Nicole. All the spiced cider you can drink, beers, sodas, whatever you want is also on board. We got to see so much of Copenhagen and the new island construction as well, it was amazing. I am pretty sure that Copenhagen is one of the few basically perfect cities in the world. We got to see so much of how perfectly planned, executed and maintained others parts of the city were. Make sure you do this tour, the boat has a roof for the winter so no matter the time of year, check them out, except January and February, they closed. read more

My husband and I took the Hey Captain tour last week and had an amazing time! This tour is such a great alternative to the super-touristy canal cruises filled with travelers from the cruise ships. The boats are small and intimate and we shared some great laughs and conversations with our fellow passengers.
