Like most bakeries of it's day, this bakery is a shadow of it's former self with it's only redeeming quality is their outdoor neon sign that they had restored. While pastries are adequate, Pearson's Bakery down the street is the better of the two. Though to be fair, Pearson's quality has slipped through the years as well...especially their chocolate chip cookies and the fact that they only carry the very small cartons of milk, whereas Hi-Way Bakery has the larger milk containers. Hi-Way Bakery serves as nothing more than a gathering place for retirees to hang out, gossip and solve the world's problems because the barbershops aren't open that early. And forget about their award-winning sheet cakes from years ago...now non existent! While it's always good to support established local business, it's time the business quits resting on its laurels and makes an attempt to recapture the essence of what put them on the map in the first place. I can't say enough good things about Hi-Way Bakery!! I made a last minute decision about ordering a cake for my grandson or making it myself... I chose Hi-Way at the very last minute and they had exactly what I wanted, ordered and picked up all within 45 minutes!! We all loved it!! These donuts and the coffee cake are super sized for real morning meals. I ate 1.5 donuts and a slice of cherry coffee cake and felt very satisfied. The way these donuts are non uniform in size and shape is a stark contrast to the cookie cutter donuts you get else where (think dunkin donuts - Note: I still like them too). Arrived to pick up our order on Friday and they did not have it ready. The man was very rude and claimed we never even placed the order. After a couple of minutes he actually found our order but instead of putting it down for Friday they put it down for Tuesday. Prior to that we had to even prove on our phone that we actually did call Highway bakery because he just would not believe us. So they wrote down the wrong date but refused to admit that they did. I love this bakery. I always impressed with their selection, even when they have half off. Picked up my aunt's birthday cake this morning. Even though they were busy? I didn't wait long. Wow! Everything we tried here was delicious! At our get-together we had almond crescents, chocolate bismarck's, spice donuts, iced long Johns, etc. Each one was fabulous. THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM! I have been coming to this place for years. I love the taste of the pastries made here. They are usually big and soft. The coffee is always hot and tasty. The service is excellent, they are always nice and helpful. If you do not come early, their will be less pastries to choose from. I know what my family likes and if I get there after 8am, the items they want are usually sold out. You can only use debit or credit for orders over $5.00 (or something like that) and they will charge a little extra for using a card, but trust me it's well worth it. I visited the bakery for the first time after reading about it on the ABC channel 7 app. I like the flavor of the yeast raised donuts, but they are very dry inside. The coffee is excellent to me.
