I give it an average star rating because these days is just a costly version of any typical, yet capable public school with the addition of arrogance in their approach.

I've often tried to sift through all our years and determine what they most learned/received at Orchard and if I had to pick one attribute (and there are many), I'd pick confidence. They are all confident public speakers. For example, when my daughter was a junior in high school, she won an award that required her to speak at a dinner with over 400 people present. I tried several times to get her to practice and review her speech in advance, knowing that the previous recipient had a professional speech writer. In frustration, one evening she said, "Mom, I went to Orchard. Don't worry." She delivered a flawless speech without notes. They are all confident about their ability to learn. Orchard likes to say they help create lifelong learners and they do. Each of our children knows how to learn and they like to learn. They are all confident expressing themselves to anyone. In high school, their teachers observed that unlike many shy teens they were not afraid to ask questions and advocate for themselves or for others. And, this has continued throughout their college and post-graduate years. Orchard invites and teaches children how to respectfully approach adults. At Orchard, education is not just about science, English, history, etc. While these are important, it's also about helping develop good people and preparing them for the future.

The smaller class sizes have made a huge difference for our children. Their teachers genuinely see them for who they are, not just academically but as individuals. There's a strong balance of accountability and encouragement. Students are challenged to do their best while also being supported and known. What sets this community apart is the faith-centered foundation. During a major life event for our family, our kids weren't just supported, they were surrounded by a community that consistently prayed over them and walked alongside us in a very real way. That kind of care goes beyond the classroom. What matters most to us is that my kids are thriving. They feel valued, they're growing in confidence, and they're being poured into by teachers who care deeply. That kind of environment is hard to find, and we're grateful to be part of it.

My first week there was a "random" drug test and Phil Nikirk (the high school principle at the time) watched as me and another student took a piss sample in the restroom. I'd say it took 5 minutes for me to actually go, it felt like this guy was breathing down my neck. Not only did I feel violated, the harassment continued throughout the year from all high school teachers. I'd get weird looks, and felt as though they wanted to burn me at the stake. This was partly because the school had driven me to a manic episode that pretty much ruined my senior year. Although I had to take a leap year, I still managed to play lacrosse at the same college I had committed to. The high school staff managed to create two semesters of suffering, at an apparently "good-willed" school. Lets not forget the prison-like exterior, it gives me the chills. Funny thing is that this school managed to convert me to a huge believer in faith when I left for college. You would be saving yourself lots of money by not coming to this school! As well as your child's sanity!

We were very excited to have gotten in and joined this school. But quickly discovered that the…read moreschool was not willing to deal with and help our son who was in the prek classroom. He went through a phase of behavioral issues and instead of dealing with them, the school kindly asked us to stop coming, even though we had paid tuition through the year (which was not refunded). After some meetings about what we were going to do and them about moving forward they had no plan in place and it became very evident that they love the students, but only if they are easy for them. They treated us all very badly and made our 4 year old extremely confused. Stefanie was less than desirable to work with and had her puppet Rae do all of her dirty work for her. After two months of not "inviting" our son back after we were working with him at home and a child therapist, we decided to pull him out indefinitely. Would not recommend this very yuppie school to anyone. Kids need guidance and help and if you want them to fail you like they did us, then by all means sign them up. Good luck.

Because the local…read morepublic schools had a poor reputation, my parents enrolled me in the elementary school at ABC Stewart and my brother in the pre-school. Although I was pretty young at the time and only attended for a few years, I look back at ABC Stewart as being an amazing experience that has positively impacted me in adulthood. ABC Stewart's elementary school is a small, intimate environment. The years I attended the total population ranged from 60 to 90-something students, and the younger grades usually had more people than the older grades. This allowed for a highly personalized learning environment. Although the default was to be grouped by grade, Stewart School allowed us to learn at our own pace. For example, I was ahead of my grade in spelling and English classes, so I was allowed to work with the higher grades for those periods. For math and science, where I was grade level, I returned back to my peers. ABC Stewart is not a true Montessori school but uses many Montessori aspects. We had traditional classes part of the day, but the other part (the fun half!) was independent study. In independent study we could travel from classroom to classroom and learn the subject of our choice. (There was a system in place to make sure kids didn't spend all the time in one subject.) I loved independent study and feel the system instills an enjoyment of learning I didn't get when I was older and in public schools. ABC Stewart Elementary is truly a nurturing and caring environment with great teachers who genuinely love their jobs. Mrs. Carmichael, the founder, is a visionary who is committed to the students, parents, and keeping the school great. If you're stuck in the Columbus area and have kids, I would definitely send them here.

Weekly visits needed addressing their incompliances requiring major clarifications on a regular basis due to their mismanagement and lack of communication. nothing adds up, always something unethical and your children come home saying they are glad to be home and out of prison. Make sure you have $ too. The kids and parents who don't, are treated differently. Wolves in sheep clothing, lack of parental and child support and resources. Teaching our children is a calling and a privilege, not a back up plan. Their indifference is showing. My children loved learning, they no longer do. Watching their light disappear while they box themselves in survival mode as they enter the building is enough.

Our public schools have been educating kids who want to learn for decades and I don't think there is anything wrong with public schools. Delaware Trails Elementary is a great example of great public schools... and Brownsburg's school system overall is outstanding. This is what I remember about public schools: Kids that were happy and proud of their school; Teachers who care about their kids and cry when they move on to the next grade, even though their proud of 'em; Making friends on the bus; Joking about how bad lunch is even though it was fine; and First class education. Delaware Trails reminds me of everything I loved about my public school and even does things much better than my old public school could ever do. I am so glad I decided to send my child here to the school her neighbors attend. Only drawback, Brownsburg's schools are all in the city limits, so it is quite a drive from my unincorporated Hendricks County development. But for my daughter to have such a great public school experience, minor, very minor. Very happy with Delaware Trails Elementary Go Bulldogs!

Instead, the experience was so good they earned the right to keep our son one more year before heading off to Orchard. There were lots of little things I appreciated about his experience here: 1 - Healthy eating! Emily and her staff were consistent in their message that kids need healthy snacks and this fits well with my personal belief we are what we eat. My son came home asking for broccoli! 2 - Geography and pin poking - This is a Montessori activity that I didn't know anything about until his experience. My son completed a map of each continent, opening the door to talking about those areas of the world and what they do there, eat there, sing there, etc. We still have these maps up in our home and use them as a reference when talking about areas of the world. 3 - Reading and singing - Scott coming and playing Rudi music on Wednesdays was a highlight for my son. When he started there, my son wasn't sure about himself or going to school and Scott's music brought out my son's personality and helped give him confidence and joy for singing and learning all the new words, sounds and days that came with those songs. He really started his love of reading here, too, which I appreciate as an avid reader. 4 - Behavior growth - My son really thrived in a time where learning those social skills, learning how to manage your emotions, learning appropriate responses to others in those situations, etc. because of the guidance at this school. I very much recommend this school as a solid choice for helping your young child get started on the right foot for their education.
