We stopped in for a late dinner after a very long two travel days coming to Chester from New Orleans, Louisiana. I'm very well used to being disappointed by lack of flavor in "Louisiana" or "American Southern" food outside of the actual American South. My entire family and I were extremely pleasantly surprised at just how good and genuinely authentic this food was. I got the "louisiana hot" chicken burger, which actually was spicy, and well seasoned, and delicious. The regular fried chicken basket was some of the best seasoned chicken my brother has had in a while. Veggie burger, cobb salad, and brisket sandwhich all got positive reviews. The only thing my brother noted is the "georgia sweet tea" is nowhere near as sweet as we make it back home! But that's totally negligible, because the delicious meal and welcoming environment was wonderful. Highly recommend. read more

Absolutely amazing food! Everything tasted so great and just like home! Super hard to find a decent American restaurant, but this place hit the mark! Staff was super friendly and sat us as quickly as they could. Was told a 40 minute wait, but it was more like 30. Our waiter was very nice and accommodated us as best as he could! It's very cute and clean restaurant. Was a bit hot because of all the heat lamps around, but still a very enjoyable nice. Pretty expensive, paid about £78 for 2. Hickory's has an extensive menu of apparently very authentic dishes from the southern states of America (judging by reviews from actual Americans) Portions are good and the food was well cooked and flavourful. Drinks are also great with a few unusual imports and non-alcoholic options beyond the usual fare. There is a lot of seating both inside and out, we were inside and it was quite loud but not unmanageable. The service was good but not particularly fast, which isn't surprising considering we dined on a Sunday night. It's by the river so it's busy and booking is recommended. There is a small car park around the back but I can't imagine anyone managing to get a space there, you'd have to be very lucky! There's street parking (with a charge) nearby, otherwise there's a multi-storey at the top of the road. There's a small cinema inside for kids, which I thought was a very nice touch. I love trying out new places. Finally back in the area and decided to give this place a chance. I had heard good things about it, so was excited to try it out! For our starters, we had the pulled pork nachos! We shared it among three people, which we could have probably ordered a second one as it wasn't that large of a portion, however, it did leave us hungry which was good since we were about to have a big meal! I had the Hog Mac n Cheese. If you know me, you know that I am a Mac N Cheese lover, so for me to say that this was good Mac n Cheese, I do honestly mean that! I would most definitely order it again! Pro tip: the Mac N Cheese comes with half of a pretzel (should be a whole in my opinion) but you should definitely dip it into your Mac n Cheese! Yum!! I had also ordered the mango and passion fruit tea as well. I was surprised to find that there were bits of fruit in it. It was refreshing and went well with a good old American meal! We had Hickory's recommended to us on a trip to Chester for business. It was a group from UK, Europe and me as the only person from the US. I was a little skeptical when I looked at the menu, and wanted to understand what the UK version of southern pit BBQ was like. I am a native Tennessean and chose the Memphis style ribs with a Memphis dry rub. I enjoyed them and think this business would succeed deep in the heart of Tennessee barbeque country. We weren't sure what Texas Barbecue would taste like in Chester, England, but we needn't have worried. The location with its view of the River Dee is lovely, especially on a warm July 2022 day. And the barbecue is everything a Texan could want! I just went for the straight BBQ sandwich, and found their sauce super; I put on my chips [fries in the US] too. While vistiing my best friend in Chester, I decided to choose here to soak up the wine. On entering , this place was packed, luckily there was only a 30 minute wait for a table. Sidling up to the bar the drinks menu was reasonably priced on the cocktail front. The barman was not cheerful but we ordered a m & m milkshake and a mojito.. both were really tasty for the price ( not more than a fiver!) It was not long before we were guided to our table. Which consisted of a red leather american style booth and a packet of complimentary popcorn . A waitress with a newbie waitress came over and asked if we wanted her to go through the menu and explained she was training the other waitress. Ethusiastically she talked through it all and you could tell she had revised the menu. The choice was immense with customisable items from salads, burgers, ribs , hotdogs, wings, nachos & meat platters.. To begin we selected the pulled pork nachos to share for £6, we almost went for the platter but my friend advised it was huge. Instead we ordered these sausages with burnt ends. Not long afterwards the nachos arrived with the same friendly service who whipped our empties away. The portion of pork was really generous on the nachos and was so succulent and smoked to perfection. I was so glad we opted to share one! Next came the mains.. once again the portion was HUGE I wish I had opted to share this one too! I ended up leaving the tasty fries, salald and half of the chunk of bread and one sausage,, it was just too much! the burnt ends were in yummy bbq sauce and was divine. The sausage was good, when I bit in it I think it was cheese that came out of it?? Overall I had heard mixed reviews about this place but I honestly think, coming from Manchester, the portions are excellent value for money and everything was tasty and the waitresses were perfect. We are native Mississippians and Hickory's was our first dining experience in Chester. The food was fabulous and authentic. The burnt ends were phenomenal as were the smoked meats. The service was friendly and efficient. They accommodated a large group of us and the manager spent time with us and showed us the smokers. Fabulous experience! The other feels it's great, but due to it being in Chester and us living in Manchester it won't become a regular haunt. Me... My sister in law had booked the table as a treat for the 4 of us , her and her husband wanted to treat us , they asked if we were celebrating anything particular. a little uncomfortable moment as she explained that i had just been diagnosed with Cancer so they were treating me. We had a few drinks in the bar while we waited for our table as we were very early, the staff behind the bar were all very friendly clearly enjoyed their work. the atmosphere and music in the bar and restaurant was perfect for this type of place. They called us through to the table and insisted on helping to carry our drinks for us. We were seated in a booth which we were happy with , the young lady serving us was very happy and enjoying working there , she informed us it was her second week but loving it there. i then got offered a free cocktail for myself as a small gesture of good will, which was a lovely thing, we then order food starters all around all very nice , another round of drinks. We ordered the mains i had the Brisket i had the same previous time we came here 6 months earlier, my wife had mac and cheeses with fried chicken that was very tasty, all the main every one was very happy with, more drinks double JD & cokes , southern comfort cokes , beers we were having a great night, ordered some puddings and more drinks brilliant night all around, We then get a visit from the on duty manager He goes on to explain how they are american restaurant and believe i the term pay it forward and he had heard about my situation how i had just been diagnosed with cancer and as a gesture of goodwill wanted to let us have our entire meal on the house, to say i was overwhelmed would be an understatement, there was not a dry eye at our table. What an amazing thing to do for somebody. my sister in law at the end of the night went looking for our server to give her a tip for doing a great job , but she had just left for the night, so she left it with the manger , What they don't know is how big our family is (5 siblings on my side and 5 siblings on my wife's side all with partners and children) who will all be told this story and will probably visit in the future. i most definitely will be as it now one our favorite place to eat and my type of food read more

We found this place completely on accident, stopping at a random town for lunch and to stretch our legs when driving from Edinburgh to Wales and this was an amazing find! Being from Arizona in the USA, we were skeptical about BBQ in England but the owners story said he had traveled the US and found all the best BBQ and opened his own place in England so we gave it a shot! The food was fantastic. Solid BBQ and huge portions, wish we could have brought everything we didn't eat with us. The only thing we did not like was the shakes. May be a local thing but they seemed to watery for us. The service was good and we sat on their lovely patio with a view of the river which was really nice. This is a hard place to review. I have attempted to visit them twice before but both time have been put off by a wait for over an hour to get a table. On this visit I was seated on the food bar right next to the kitchen and I have to say I would be in a hurry to sit there again. It is not the most pleasant place to have a chef getting rather angry at servers to put out plates when they are all busy serving customers. The food was ok. The burger I had was a little dry and the pulled pork tasted a bit bland. The entire meal lacked that American BBQ feel. The food wasn't the melt in your mouth type quality you would get in the states and they just seem to be missing the mark in running a kitchen like a kitchen rather than a BBQ. I like the smell of smoke round a BBQ. The member of staff I had was nice but service on the whole was slow and haphazard. A rare 5* review, because it really IS worth it. First visited end of April with a friend. We enjoyed the sun, sat outside and have an incredible shared platter of rips and other tasty bits. Th service was excellent, and to my delight, I found the dogs are welcome in the outside seating area. I went back again the following Monday (Bank Holiday) so waited over an hour for a table, hoping it would be worth it. The staff were fabulous with my dog, brought extra bones for him when we left. The food was as fabulous on the 2nd visit and this time, I made it to dessert enjoying the best cheesecake I've ever remembered having in a UK restaurant. Visited this place for lunch for a friends birthday party. We had reserved a table for 10 and they sat us in a large booth, although it was still a little restricting in terms of space. There were 2 toddlers with our group and the waitress was great with them, she took them to the games room to choose a game to take to the table. It's very American here, they serve decent portions, most of it is served with 'slaw' and it's all pretty unhealthy! So don't come if you're on a diet! I ordered chicken fajitas which was ok, I've had better. The guacamole, cheese, sore cream and salsa portions were a little small and there was a big bowl of undressed lettuce which I've never had served with fajitas before, strange. Fajitas were about £12, ok price wise, but I've tasted better and for less! I tired some of my friends Hickory beef burger, but it was a bit dry and thin. The birthday girl ordered pork ribs and it arrived on an impressively large wooden board (taking up most of the table) and covered in Hickory sauce. The portion was nearly the same size of her! She was delighted with it, although when I tasted a little (she was sharing it out as she couldn't manage it all herself) I thought it was very fatty. Staff were great, decor is fun with quirky pig snout for door handles and the location is lovely, right on the river. Amazing! Hickorys grill is just fantastic. We went in a busy Saturday night and the staff were great. The atmosphere is awesome! The outside is a traditional pub kind of layout, but the inside it's themed like an American smokehouse (would you believe!), but not too 'in your face'. We were lucky enough to sit on a bar style table overlooking the prep area. The only downside to this was that we had to look at everything that we almost ordered (serious food envy going on here). To start, we had a portion of 'burnt ends' between two. A small portion if you are sharing, but starts the meal off nicely. The crispy cajun coating was fantastic! This came with a put of bbq sauce. For our main, both of us had the xxxl burger. The name really should give something away. It's got a really high quality burger, a nice big dollop of bbq pulled pork, smothered in cheese with a nice crisp salad. Then, they put what have to be 2 of the biggest onion rings I've ever seen on top. It does cost nearly £15, but it's worth it! Now, I've already mentioned that it was busy, and when I say that, I mean BUSY. That didn't seem to bother them at all, and the food was delivered so quickly. We decided that we have to go back before we even finished our food, and, to be honest, I'm usually pretty fussy, so, take that as a good sign. Overall, the starter, two mains and three beers cost just over £40, but it was well worth it. This thing called the sun peaked through the clouds with a little bit of wind but we sat outside anyway but under the cover 'just in case.' The river and expensive homes were nice to look at from our table, we were lucky for good weather. Grilled vegetables was an amazing surprise aNd I substituted the fries w cheese chilli fries which was just jalepeño and so-so cheese. I can't remember but... Burnt ends were nice little greasy, as were the prawn starters, again a little greasy. My partner had the steak & said it was lovely. (With the price tag or course!) This place truly is a good as it gets!!! As soon as you walk through the door, you will find your self greeted by happy, enthusiastic staff. The atmosphere is fantastic and so is the American decor. The food is slightly pricey but I promise you that it is well worth it. The only criticism I have is that they need to get Blue Moon on tap because the bottles are a little pricey (The authentic American beer is another great reason to go). The American diner it is today must have once been a serious restaurant, at least it looks like one from the outside. Upon entering the smell of popcorn greats you. Water and popcorn and in some cases balloons are for free. However the music is so loud, the waitress had to ask twice before I recognised she was talking to me, people are yelling all over the place. Long before we were even seated, while waiting for my girlfriend in front of the toilets (which also happens to be near where the serving staff pick up their orders from the kitchen), I had the pleasure of watching the fellow who calls "service!" wipe his nose with his hand, while dozens of plates heaped with greasy, processed cheese-smothered fare passed by. From this vantage point the giant onion rings alone looked appetizing; the rest of it screamed not so much "American" as "British" with an overpriced, low-quality "American" chain sheen. That said, the dearth of riverfront patios in Chester, coupled with sore legs from a day of walking, and (I admit) the almost 5-star rating with thirteen reviews here, suggested we end our day by giving this one a shot. I settled on a pint of Brooklyn Lager (£4.50!) and we decided to share a sundae (£9.50!). We were both expecting something utterly decadent and disreputable, though at least tasty. The menu had no description for the sundae, but the server assured us it came with cookies, sauces, and sundry other tasty things. What we got was a giant bowl of ice cream with four cookie sticks, a minuscule amount of crumbled cookie somewhere near the top (the best part), and an indiscernible, mostly melted mess at the bottom. We couldn't figure out if they were raisins or gelatin candies and stopped halfway through. Interestingly, we noticed another couple at the next table do exactly the same thing with theirs. The nice patio coupled with the mostly honest menu advertising bumps this place a step above my worst review. The Brewery Tap a short walk away isn't perfect, but it's a cautiously recommended better bet for quality and value. read more

Staff are pleasant and food is stunning! I don't even know what to recommend in particular its all nice!! It's advised to book especially if there are more than 2 of you wanting to eat, we particularly love to sit round the "breakfast table" (don't know how else to describe it tbh!) it's a high table with bar style stools set around the kitchen - love it but you can't book these seats unfortunately- they're usually set aside for walk ins with small numbers. The ribs are huge and so tender, the slow roasted bbq beef brisket is amazing my personal favourite has to be the Cajun spiced onion rings!! Can't say I rate the Burgers for value or "wow" factor but then it's a smokehouse if you want a burger go to a burger chain! Obviously this place has a great location -right on the river, so on a nice day it is really good to sit outside where there is plenty of space. It's a American style restaurant that does big breakfasts -pancakes etc and I think it suits the place. We only ordered drinks. The staff were friendly, but the service was slow. Best steak house I have been to so far! As steak lovers we are always searching for a great place to eat ( thats not pub grub! ).. well this place hit the mark. yes it gets very busy its on the chester water side and has a great rep so of course it will book in advance even if 2 of you just to be sure. reason its busy? its bloody good! and on the chester riverside yes its fairly pricey but you get what you pay for! 340g rump steak (thats approx 12 oz uncooked weight) with 3 HUGE home battered onion rings and gorgeous pepper sauce for just close to £18.. (its got a fair sized fat wedge on one side but this is the norm on steaks and needed for the flavour etc). I dont like onion rings normally, but these were class, felt like a meal in themselves, in a tower with a little whole roasted red chilli on top (dont eat the chilli unless you like it HOOOTT! haha..) seriously dont ;-) For what you get and the quality, the price isnt really that bad, I've paid £16 for an 8oz steak in a fairly ordinary restaurant before were they clearly only cared about money and not the customer. If you sit outside people smoke so advice not to if you dont or dislike it. When we arrived and asked for indoors they were happy for us to open our side doors to get air.. we chose not to as the place it air conditioned perfectly so we didnt feel hot or cold. The doors to the side of the seats for the upper section we ate at are a great idea but little too close to people eating outside for me to feel happy to open really, was worried i'd knock the woman sitting by the door on the outside. I would have opened the door as well a crack but the woman outside smoking , the air condic sorted it all out fine though. Didnt feel a prob not being able to open them even on a hot afternoon. When you arrive at your table they bring a big bottle of water and serve some in glasses to you and leave the bottle with you to drink.. so you can sip it and chose to buy soft drinks or alchohol or not.. how cool is that these days!? most places just want your cash for expensive drinks. Glass of fresh squezed orange ( i mean properly fresh not bottle fresh) was £1.80 and half a pint, very reasonable, not like most places watered down carton crap and charge you £3-4 quid for it. freshly popped kernal salted popcorn as a nibbler on your table as well :-) Its extra to buy the fries with skins on when you buy the steaks, but they are worth it! yummy! x 10 never tasted any so good! real potatoes, and very morish. They offer a HUGE steak like Man V Food style steak for £70 whopping quid! buts its masssooofffffff haha sure its ace and well I cant handle more than 16 oz on a very good day but would be good tv to see someone eat that monster!.. steaks taste like pure american hickory grill .. beautiful. Had minor issues with mine but the manager spoke to us personally about it and sorted it. Before we start.... plan ahead and book days in advance to avoid disappointment. If you turn up, you will be added to the list and the wait is usually an hour so try to book a day or two in advance. The service is good, food is served quickly even with a full restaurant. The ribs are to die for, I can easily say its the best ribs i've had... EVER! The meat falls off the bone... do i need to say more? Exactly!!! Eating on the decking area overlooking the river on a sunny evening is very nice! I have been on multiple times for breakfast, lunch and dinner and I have not had a bad experience, the food is A* standard and is priced very well too!! I would keep away from the pulled pork and burger, its a bit dry compared to the rest of the menu. I usually order steak or ribs so if you follow suit you cannot go wrong!
