Another nice, easy hike to add to our list around the Roseville area! Biggest tip is to be sure and go online to reserve ahead of time and pay a small fee, if necessary. Reservations are required on weekends, some Fridays, and selected dates. Otherwise, Mon thru Thu are free with no reservations required. Parking available inside is limited so come early to avoid the hassle. I believe they open at 6:30 AM and closing is dependent on sundown. We hiked with our 2 little girls and dogs. Even with the little ones, we were able to make it to the Canyon View Overlook and back. In case your dog needs a bathroom break, bag it up and I recall there was at least one trash can along the path towards the Overlooks. Help keep this hiking gem clean! Scenery was gorgeous, hike was pretty easy without difficulty, and be sure to visit both Overlooks for some beautiful sights. We took the North Legacy Way, in case you're curious. Paid for the ticket reservation online. $8 for all day parking pass. They have $4 options but those are for early morning or later in the afternoon. I much prefer a reservation system like this because it saves on the stress and time of fighting for parking and an overcrowded park. People who rated this low are just mad because they didn't do research or come prepared. Theres plenty of trail options here but we did the main hidden falls loop trail that was on AllTrails. (Poppy Trail, N Legacy Way, then Hidden Falls Access Trail, total loop about 3.2 miles) It was a beautiful hike with tons of mushrooms everywhere right now, and hidden falls is flowing! Theres two observation decks. I kind of don't like how the deck at hidden falls is right above the falls so it blocks the falls, you have to look down over the rail/ledge, so there's no way you can get a good photo with the falls behind you read more

When we arrived we were greeted by John, the park attendant who provided us with a map, illustrative, verbal instructions, as well as other helpful info as we set out on our quest to see the Falls. This is the first park I've ever visited that had a mobile sink AND running water! All the walkers, hikers, bikers, friends, families and couples we encountered were nice. A good number of dogs which as I retired dog mom, warmed my heart. The Falls were absolutely beautiful. I appreciated the signs that talked about the vegetation as well as signage to each trail to help visitors avoid getting lost. We ventured out later than planned so we definitely will be returning. One of my new favorite trails! Such a beautiful park! Auburn always takes the cake for the most amazing hikes. I highly recommend going on a weekday to avoid the hassle of parking reservations. Also, with temperatures rising I HIGHLY suggest going early morning or late evening/sunset hike. I went @7AM surprisingly a group was already there. About 20 other people also hiking, going on a run. At the entrance of hiking trails, there's a map that showcases various trails, including the level of intensity (easy/moderate/difficult), and which ones have access to Hidden Falls. The hike had lots of shade from the gorgeous trees! I was mesmerized! It was a gift to be able to be surrounded by such beauty. Ugh- I miss it already. While I walked with my friends, we heard birds chirping, bees buzzing, and sounds of the water crashing. We also had a morning breeze that made the hike so much more enjoyable. There's an overview bridge area to gander at the waterfall. However, the best views are floor level. Take the time to explore and scope the scenery! My friends and I ended up finding a hidden spot, tucked away- Plenty of shade, great view of the waterfall, and away from other hikers. We had a picnic there, painted, and enjoyed the glistening water! In that area there were so many beautiful butterflies that danced around us. Such a lovely experience. The heat quickly rose to 90°+, so we left around 10-ish AM. On the way back we ran into a few more hikers and TONS of horses! They were so beautiful and majestic! Great trails for equestrians to enjoy. The hike back sucked! Firstly, sweating bullets from the heat. Secondly, due to the trail to the waterfall mostly being downhill- it was an uphill battle to get back. So worth it! But just so you know what to expect. This waterfall is super pretty, and there are places where you can get in the water a little bit. The hike to the waterfall is over 50% shaded, I would say. The downside is that the hike there is mostly downhill, which means the hike back is all uphill and very challenging if you don't hike regularly. Like I'm pretty sure that people starting their hikes were seeing me coming back up and second-guessing their decision because I looked like I had been chewed up and spit back out haha. You can't go here without a reservation either so plan ahead. Parking is $8 I think, but there's a bathroom with seat covers, toilet paper, and hand soap at the start of the trails. read more

I honestly didn't expect to love this park as much as I did. It's quiet, beautiful, and feels like a little escape from everything. The trails are super chill not too hard, but enough to feel like you're out in nature. The waterfall isn't huge, but it's really pretty, especially after some rain. It's also a great spot for walking, biking, or just sitting by the water and zoning out for a bit. I saw a few families, some people with dogs, and everyone seemed to be enjoying the calm vibe. Only thing I'd say is parking can be kind of tricky on busy days, so maybe come early if you're going on a weekend. If you're into peaceful nature spots that aren't too far out of the way, this place is 100% worth checking out. read more

We live close so the fam and I decided to go on a quick Christmas Day hike...crazy weather-so super fun...but then the lightning came...fast! We were (thankfully) near the entrance, so Jacob in the ranger building offered to let us hang with him while the lightning storm passed. My kids are on spring break so I decided to take them hiking . I have been to Hidden Falls before and it's just so beautiful. First off you have to get a parking pass on their website (placer.ca.gov ) certain weekdays you may not need one, but you have to check on the website first . I went on a Tuesday and I did have to get a parking pass .The price is $8 all day and $4 for half a day . Upon arriving there is a little stand where they scan your. parking ticket to enter . The guy also gave me a paper map with all the different trails the park has to offer from easy ,moderate to difficult. Which is pretty cool . We chose North legacy Trail, which was the easy one, but we did have to start at Poppy Trail to get there. It's just so beautiful being out in nature with the big trees and the beautiful trails . The golden ticket was when we made it to the overview deck where the beautiful waterfalls are at . We got to sit down a little and just enjoy the moment. On the way back we even got to get a little lower to where the water was at. My sons loved it ! There is some restrooms when you first enter the park and there is a few portable restrooms inside the park. You should be able to find it in your map of where they are located at . Overall my boys and I had an amazing time here . This location is great for families of all ages depending on what trail you pick . Take a lot of water a paper map and keep in mind you will not get any phone reception inside the park . We can't wait to go back for an other day adventure. read more

I finally made it to Hidden Falls!! I have been trying to get here since February 2020. Every time I plan to go, something else comes up! LOL. But, not this time! I made the trip to Hidden Falls today and I'm so happy I did! It was a nice mini getaway from Sacramento, without a super long drive with traffic! I came to go on a mini hike, but, really to see that hidden waterfall! I took an easy trail (S. Legacy Way, I believe it was), it felt moderate after awhile with all the rocks and inclines! When I finally got to the waterfall, I was so happy I pushed myself! I was able to relax for a bit, take in the cool breeze before going on the long trek back to the parking lot (~30 minutes each way). It felt longer getting back because it was lunch time and my lunch was in the car(ha! A protein shake and ice cold water!). Note to self, bring trail max or nuts next time! The bathrooms were closed, but, there were portable toilets (BYO hand sanitizer!). A map at the entrance of all the trails rated by level of difficulty, and paper maps available to take on the go. There are wooden trail signs every 0.5 mile with names of intersecting trails. There are both concrete and dirt trails (which I walked) depending on how rugged ya wanna get! I definitely will plan to return again in the Spring when the weather is warmer! (My poor fingers were freezing for a part of the time I was there) read more

Who would have thought that the little town of Auburn would have such a gorgeously green park filled with beautiful wooded trails and flourishing waterfalls?! One thing that I'm learning is that there is so much natural beauty to be explored in this part of the north. Did a 9 mile hike here last year that looped through the bulk of the park and ended near Canyon View Falls, and it was absolutely gorgeous. You'll get a nice mix of trails here from your heavily wooded forest treks to your exposed hilly fire road jaunts. I started on the Poppy Trail which switchbacks down into the forest and passes by gushing creeks, bright green foliage, and shaded groves. Saw lots of berries and ferns all throughout the canyon and it was such a soothing sight. I then crossed over a bridge to the South Legacy Trail. This trail is a wider path and mostly flat. It's also a lot more trafficked with both hikers and bikers. The bikers are pretty polite though and the trail is wide enough to where they can safely pass you by. The South Legacy Trail intersects the middle of the park, so you'll have some really beautiful views all throughout. Finally, I connected to the Creekside Trail which gradually inclines back up and then takes you up to this stunning viewpoint where the waterfalls are. And let me tell you; the views are quite majestic up there. The falls were flourishing with so much water. There are actually two waterfalls on that trail; Canyon View Falls which are the larger of the two near the Canyon View Lookout and Hidden Falls. Hidden Falls are definitely hidden! I would have never known that a second set of waterfalls would be tucked behind a small mountain at the end of the other trail. But damn... they are ravishing. This hike was around 9 miles long and it tired me out, but it was so worth it for the views. I'm sure there are much shorter loops that you can take to get you to the falls if that's your main intention. A few side notes; parking is $8 and must be reserved in advanced online if you're visiting Friday-Sunday. Also, be careful of where you park. I think I must have parked next to a tree or a garbage can or something. I honestly can't remember at this point. But after leaving this park, I had ants in my car for a few weeks. My car was only about 2 weeks old at the time, and that was the first hiking trip that I had taken it on, so... yeah. I had never had ants in my car before, but I feel like there was an infestation nearby and they were able to somehow crawl onto my car. Just a fair warning to look around after you park. But anyways, loved this park and that wonderful hike. I would love to return again to do more hikes in the future. It's just a scenic area. read more

Hiking! Hidden falls is a great hiking place especially for newbies. They are pretty hidden. No wonder it's called 'hidden' lol. Due to covid, reservation is required online. You can reserve for full ($8) or half ($4) day. Also, they are only open on certain days so be sure to check online. Came here on Sunday morning and was greeted by the staff at the gate. He was very nice. He scanned my parking ticket and off I went. Parking is easy as they have parking lots there and good amount of spots. In the front, there is a board there will trails map. There is also portable potty there for guests to use. There are many trails here. Ranges from easy to hard. I took the easy trails since I'm a rookie. The north and south legacy trails are 6.6 miles total. While on the trails, it was nice and quiet. I did encounter 2 deers. Even though these were easy trails, there were some spots that were a little elevated. On these trails, you will be able to see the waterfalls. Nice views. Do bring lots of water as walking will make you thirsty. There are portable potty within the trails if needed. Be aware of poops on the trails. There are lots of them! read more

Came here for the first time last weekend with a few friends. I haven't gone on an actual hike so this was a bit challenging for me but the views and scenery were incredible. There were quite a few benches and rest areas which came in handy for me since I needed to take breaks quite often. The waterfalls looked really nice and I enjoyed seeing the various forms of wildlife. Reserving a parking spot was a little annoying though since it required me to make an account, enter my home address, and enter the license plate number of the car I was taking. I highly recommend taking a hike here if you're up for a little challenge. I just wish their online reservation system was better and didn't require as much information as it currently asks for. If that system was better then this would be an easy 5 star review. read more

BRING WATER BRING WATER BRING WATER!!! Shall I say it again? There are no potable water locations once you begin your hike. So, you need to be sure you have water, and a snack... you know, just in case you get lost in the wilderness...LOL A. You must have a reservation to get in. (as of this review anyway)... make one online, print it out and show at the kiosk B. Great, clean restroom facilities at the parking lot area. And, then again at a couple places along the way. C. Pack in and pack out... What this means, is that you must bring your own food/water... and be sure to take everything out when you leave. That includes dog poop bags! This is an extremely clean and well maintained park. We happened to come to the park on a weekend, and it was almost 100 degrees out. HMMMM maybe reconsider the temp next time before heading out. The park was not crowded at all, and those we encountered were very friendly. Nice well maintained and well marked trails will get you where you want to go. Poppy Trail heading to the falls is a series of switchbacks heading down into the valley. Cross a portion of the stream (over a bridge) and head on down the North Legacy (wide gravel road path) or Hidden Falls trail (narrow dirt trail through the trees). We took Hidden Falls trail as it meanders through the trees sort of along the stream. There is an overlook just before the actual falls area which is nice, and some ways to get down to the actual stream. Some precarious so be careful. It was heartbreaking to see how incredibly low the water was. Not much of a 'falls' experience right now (first of July 2021). You can definitely see where the past water lines were. Coming back was more of a chore as you are hiking uphill the entire way. And, the 100 degree heat didn't help. But, we made it back, just sweaty and dirty from the loose trail dirt. read more

This is an excellent spring/fall hike. I went for the first time after hearing about it for years. I was finally willing to go because of the reservation system- there's nothing worse than going into nature and being surrounded by more people than the area can handle. The reservation system was easy to use and check in at the park was quick (just show your pass). The trails are very well-marked and packed down. The trail to the falls themselves are a mix of gravel and packed dirt. Hiking down to the falls themselves are relatively easy, plenty of switchbacks. The falls are currently running and the pools at the bottom have nice clear water. Our dogs loved playing in them and we enjoyed taking off our shoes to cool down for a bit! Significant portions of this trail are exposed during the middle of the day, so follow the recommendations to bring water or fill up at the fountains by the restrooms. Also, if you're going in the spring close to the evening, consider wearing bug spray. As it got close to 5pm I was eaten alive by mosquitos. read more

I love this park so much, that after visiting in the fall of 2020, I also made it my birthday hike in the spring of 2021. It's a remarkably well signed trail given it's a regional park and you can do a variety of shorter or longer loop hikes. In the fall I was greeted with lingering foliage and in the spring an array of colorful wildflowers. Weekends and what they deem "high usage days" (probably holidays) require an advance parking reservation which you can make online and is $8. I took the following trails: Poppy Trail, part of Blue Oak Loop, Seven Pools overlook, seven Pools loop to canyon trail and then the Hidden falls access trail. In my opinion the seven pools overlook and Canyon overlook are not to be missed. It was also quieter on the trails that didn't lead directly to the falls. In fact, because I went on a weekend, much of the park was not crowded at all-the reservation system does a great job of managing any potential to overcrowd. There is no parking outside the park either. Trails are well maintained but on my last visit there was no potable water. The hikes here are moderate but you will face an incline from the falls on the way back to the parking lot. Bring plenty of water-especially in the spring and summer. Even on an April afternoon of about 80 degrees it felt much hotter on these trails. Wonderful hiking, scenic falls, lots of wildflowers in the spring and worth the drive out here, even from the East Bay. Just all around lovely regional park. read more

I originally planned to head back to the parking lot via the rest of Hidden Falls Access Trail but I got kinda lost and accidentally took Bobcat Trail, which lead me back to North Legacy Way.....so I ended up just taking the same trails back to the lot lol #welp. I definitely recommend taking Poppy Trail as it's mostly shaded. This trail is listed as a difficult trail on the map, but as a person who doesn't really hike often, I was able to manage it (no huffing/puffing, no scary things like narrow cliffside terrain). For beginner hikers, it's a great introduction to the concept of trail switchbacks especially as the inclines/declines aren't steep. The Canyon View Falls were tiny lol not the best time of year to see these falls I suppose. The gazebo-style viewing deck for these falls was neat though (there is notable incline in the short path leading to the viewing deck and honestly the view from the deck isn't all that spectacular compared to what you can already see at ground level.....it's just a nice place to sit and relax especially as there aren't many spots to sit in the park). The Hidden Falls is a medium-sized waterfall. Pretty. The viewing deck here is easier to reach and closer to the waterfall compared to the Canyon View Falls viewing deck. Saw much more people chill here. Even though there are map displays and trail direction signs throughout the park, I still recommend printing out a map as the large number of trails intersecting each other can be a bit overwhelming to some people (I encountered a couple of people who seemed lost.....it wasn't just me! lol). Would I recommend someone to drive 3+ hours here just to see the waterfalls? Eh, not really especially during this time of year.....but if you're really intrigued about the many different trails this park has, then head up on here! read more

Came here at 8 am on. Saturday and the parking lot was empty. It was a chilly morning and but clear blue skies, it's a perfect day to hike along the trails. We went down the south Legacy path and followed the sign to the Hidden Falls lookout. It was nice to have the entire trail to myself... I get to enjoy the beauty that nature offers and have a little peace. The fall was absolutely beautiful! I walked down to the river as well and touched the icy cold. Overall, a great place and I could spend all day there. Be careful of the horse poop along the trails. One thing I don't like is finding little bag of dog poops left behind on the side of the trails. Make sure you reserve your parking spot in advance if you're planning to visit in the weekends. read more

Great hike in Auburn. There are many trails to choose from. If you're looking for Hidden Falls then you want to take the switchback down to the riverfront then follow until you get to Hidden falls access trail. The falls are pretty but not spectacular so don't get your hopes up. You are hiking for the scenery and workout. If you want a real challenge then take North Legacy trail back from the falls. This is a beautiful park. There are many trails, much of it rock or clay. They have an abundance of parking spaces. When driving there it seems like you'll never make it, it's far back from everything. The sights are something to see! After hiking a little over a mile and a half we found the hidden waterfall. It was breathtaking. The area is very well kept and getting there is pretty easy. There were some steep angles, and tight areas, but it was manageable for 2 small dogs, me and my girlfriend. This was our first hiking trip and it surely won't be our last. There were many trails that could be taken. Some are perfect for walking. Some are great for mountain bikes. There's plenty to see! Previously, it was always stressful going there on weekends because I was never sure if there would be a parking spot if I don't go super early. The prices are: $8.00 per vehicle - full day (sunrise to sunset) $4.00 per vehicle - partial day (morning or afternoon) This area is a great hiking spot, with well maintained wide trail path, and picturesque sceneries. Our absolute favorite park in the greater Sacramento area with so many different trails that you can customize a hike to your liking on pretty much every visit. Do note that you need to buy a parking pass for weekend days - $8 and well worth the money as it guarantees a spot and helps keep the park from overcrowding. Maps are available at the gate or online. The trails range from easy to moderate with no huge or abrupt changes in elevation. There are multiple spots to enjoy views of the waterfalls and rivers here along with several picnic areas. Came on a perfect day! Not too warm, not too cool. There are a variety of different trails you can hike with different levels of difficulties. My husband and I spent 3 hours here! (Paid for it later through allergies). Poppy trail was fun to get the the waterfalls but we totally skipped it going back- it's leveled difficult but to me it (an extremely out of shape humanoid here) it wasn't too bad. Very family friendly and the Canyon Waterfall can be seen from a deck- my husband is standing on it in the photo. I'd take a picnic there FOR SURE! We will be back when we get our allergies under control. They have someone patrol throughout the day which is nice especially if you run out of water or something. IMPORTANT! YOU HAVE TO MAKE PARKING RESERVATIONS ONLINE ON THE WEEKENDS. It was $4 for half a day. We did 2:30pm- Sunset. Pro tips: Bring your own water as there are no water fountains or anything available. We have been wanting to get to the hiking trails for several years. Now that the kids are of age to walk a bit it was appropriate to take them out! Its pretty ironic that we drive an hour just to "walk," but it's absolutely worth it. This is one of the easiest, yet most satisfying hikes I've taken with my family. The map is vividly labeled and easy to read, so you know exactly which direction to go at the crossroads (or crosstrails?) Anyways you can plan exactly how far and how difficult of a hike you'd like to accomplish. There is always parking on non-peak days and you can easily reserve a spot during peak hours. Hidden Falls is one of the most organized and upkept parks. ps. wear lots of bug spray, and maybe plan to get wet if its hot enough. read more
