First time I had a nail salon owner be as concerned about my nail's health as the appearance of my nail polish. Jennie and Cindy are each excellent at their craft. Cindy does the pedicures and Jenny the manicures. I had Gel X nails applied for a vacation I was taking and they lasted me more than 3 weeks. I only removed them because I wanted to give my own nails a breather and to check on them, if not for that I could have gone another week they looked that good without lifting or changing colors. (I have heard the polish can yellow if you use a lot of hot water bathing or washing dishes without gloves.) But not in my case due to the care Jenny used in applying them and painting them. And here is where this salon outdid itself in my opinion, when Jenny removed the Gel X nails she was gentle and took the time not to just file away the false nails but to insure my own nails didn't get damaged in the process. She was very mindful of not rushing the process. Then when it was time to apply polish to my nails she used TWO coats of base. First a nail protectant like Nailtique and then a nail strengthener, clear coat to smooth the surface for the colored polish. No charge. No questions. Just did it the right way. ( My manicure is on week two and no chips.) I asked Jenny if she gets walk-ins because she is tucked behind Dario's on Bridgeway. Her reply was no. Makes sense but I'd like to see her receive more business based on her thoroughness and the obvious pride she takes in her work. So, if you are looking for a Nail Salon that is Owner operated and you're ready to receive excellent care and are happy in a small environment filled with flowers and the chirping of songbirds from the outside greenery and are tired of the gossipy places where you know if you hear "tea" about others you are talked about in the same manner when you leave? This is my new local go-to and the dip manicures I prefer to most other places I've tried both in SF and northern Marin. Not to mention the price is super competitive - which in this economy, I need to consider. Tucked away behind a restaurant you'll find High 5 nails. A small nail salon that delivers. This time I got tips and dip, because my pedicure is still flawless from (here) a few weeks ago. The owner doesn't lay on the dip too thiccccc (as some places do) but makes your nails feel more natural. She just did an amazing job adding on some fake tips and brushed my American (a color) dip with some unicorn/Pearl chrome dust to give me that TikTok H Bieber look. I love this place, but suggest making an appointment for midday to make sure you can get in! I said it before, but I'll say it again: if you are concerned about picking up flesh eating bacteria from the jets in salon pedi chairs, I highly recommend that you ease your mind with a salon that uses bowls or pedi tubs. SCENE This is a really quiet and quaint shop to get your nails done. There were only three pedi chairs, which was cool because I could go with two girlfriends and chat it up. TREATMENT I got the milk chocolate pedi - loved it. My tub here was scattered with rose petals making for a super relaxing experience. Then, they exfoliated my heels with some sweet smelling brown sugar mix, followed by a chocolate foot and leg mask. I loved that the mask was sweet smelling and tingled like there was a hint of peppermint - nice finish to a sweet deal. DEAL I saved super big by buying a Groupon. However, I just noticed that Yelp also has a a sweet deal which is awesome for repeat customers - those Groupons are usually one hit wonders. COLORS I liked the color selection here because they had a lot more mattes than my regular place. The paint was done flawlessly, which isn't always easy with mattes (they tend to streak if you don't know what you're doing). Also, my nails didn't chip as quickly. PART 2 If you are a person of color, please think twice before going here!!! Today, Tuesday, 1/28/20: 5 nails begin to peel, lift, and crack. I called in to ask for a fix as it has been less than 5 days. Tracy graciously said she can take me at 1:15pm. On the way there I thought to myself, this shouldn't have been happening, especially if she had prepped my nail correctly for gel application instead of rushing through it. I arrive, she looks at my nails and said I must have been rough on my nails, because they should not have been doing that. I asked her if washing my hands, putting lotion on my hands, or putting moisturizer in my hair was too rough, because that's literally all I've done. She still was trying to blame me because she's "been doing nails for 18 years and NEVER had this problem". Strange. I had not been picking at or messing with them, opening things, or scratching rough surfaces, so if gel is meant to last 2 weeks, why 4 days later they are bubbling, cracking, and peeling? Sounds like an application problem to me, but I never stated that to her face. She took off the gel of the nails that needed fixing. I told her my thumb nail looked like it was going to lift as well. She told me she knows what she's doing, and at that point was getting snappy with me. After she finished, she forgot to put a clear top coat on my thumb as she said she would, to "secure" the thumb nail, since she didn't want to fix it like the others. However, when I asked her to put it on my thumb, she told me she applied it already. It was clearly not applied. She then takes another customer and starts working on her feet. After I insisted this was the last thing that needed to be done, she then told the other lady to apply for me. The lady applied it then used her nail to "clean up polish" that got my my skin around my nail. She accidentally lifts the gel from my nail base, then trys to cover it up by adding more polish. I mentioned it to Tracy. She is very annoyed with me and she told me my nail was fine, just don't pick at it.... so leave. I go to my car and examine my thumb which had already started curling on the side. I was still there so I went back inside. Tracy then stood up and started yelling at me and going in my face saying she is losing patience with me. I told Tracy to please lower her voice as I am not causing a scene like she is and her energy was making me very uncomfortable. I was a customer who paid for a service that I felt was rushed in the very beginning. I came in to get my nails fixed in every step of the way I felt I was being rushed and hushed. All I wanted was to get my nails fixed and I would pay for it if it's not a courtesy for them not lasting more than a day without lifting. She then refused to service me and told me to take my business elsewhere. I let her know how confused I was by this treatment. The lady she was working on was just acting as if she didn't just witness Tracy being extremely rude to me. I asked the lady was I doing too much to ask for a nail to be fixed and if it seemed rude to her I was being yelled at and cussed out by the owner. Tracy interjected saying she spend an hour on my nails the first time (not true). The customer said she was just trying to relax, but she's been coming to Tracy and knows her to take her time, she fixed my nails "for free" and I continue to have a problem. I let her know I understand her experience with Tracy has been nothing but pleasant, however I haven't experienced the same equal treatment. I felt rushed and now I'm being yelled at for getting a nail fixed I offered to pay for in the beginning. Tracy continued to let me know how unwelcomed I was and I was not allowed back. I'm not sure the extreme animosity my way. I hope it's not racially motivated, but it sure seems that way, and there are many other reviews and verbal confirmations of this happening at this establishment. read more

This review is for the mani/pedi's I've received, not any hair service. Tracy does a swell job with my gel manicure and the girl who does the toes, does a decent job too. My only complaint is that last time, the girl who did my toes finished up and then passed the same tools she used on my feet to Tracy, who then tried using them on my hands! I was actually paying attention and told Tracy that I wanted fresh stuff and she didn't make a stink about it, but the fact that she tried, weirded me out. I originally found out about High 5 Salon due to a Groupon I purchased, and now, I will never go anywhere else. I usually go in for Shellac and a pedicure and recently they also started waxing me.This salon is easy to get to, there's always parking, it's extremely clean, and ALL of the technicians are efficient, skilled, patient and friendly, they don't gossip amongst eachother, they play great music...Its also very well priced. My daughter had acrylics put on, and I had a mani/pedi along with an eyebrow wax. Although the chairs are older, they are very comfortable. The separate footbath was nicely decorated with thin fruit slices. Both women working were very pleasant with the right balance of conversation and quiet. I booked my appointment for 12 and I wanted a full for my acrylics, my usual nail salon only takes about 30-40 mins to apply the new acrylic and file and all of that. It was 12:50 and all she had done was removed my polish. I was in a big rush that day and didnt had the time. She cut my with the nail drill multiple times and tried to pry off my existing acrylic with a nail tip, I was in so much pain and told her multiple times. My nails were all different lengths and shapes by the end up my appointment and I was not impressed with the polish application. It took 2 hours to get a fill in my very short acrylics.
