More often than not something I was looking for was in stock and I went home with a new CD to lose myself in. I almost never had to special order anything. All the staff I've ever dealt with (Usually owner Gordie) have been rad, laid back and helpful. The selection ranges from a good amount of local albums, a healthy dose of indie staples and new albums from bands that matter. If you're looking for music more along the lines of top 40, this isn't your place. The used selection is always healthy and will probably have something you're looking for - and often at an incredible price. Stop by and see just how great this store is. Saint John is lucky to have it.

Don't go there if you don't have a lot of time (or patience) on your hands though. The 45s are scattered all over the store with no rhyme or reason as to how they're situated (condition, genre, price, used or new.) After a bit of digging, I got frustrated and moved on. I didn't feel like getting down on my knees to sort through the unalphabetized singles in the milk crates on the floor. SecondSpin dudes, if you're reading this - organize your 45s and pick them up off the floor. Also, the store doesn't have bags. You'll have to bring your own. It was raining the day I was in there so I asked for a bag for my purchases. The counter guy looks at me blankly and says "I have no bags, man." He said this as if I was already supposed to instinctively know this. So I had to put the records under my shirt so they wouldn't get wet. I'm giving them three out of five for their reasonable prices and diversity of stock. I can live with the byob policy but I shouldn't have to bring kneepads to search their stock. Sort it out, guys.

However, I did find some used books that I wanted, and I walked out with a bunch of books and paid less than 10 bucks. I went back there yesterday, as my daughters were looking forward to getting some new ((to them)) books, and the place was in even worse shape. A few places couldn't be navigated without being super careful about tripping over books on the floor. My 14 year old daughter wanted to immediately clean the place. In the end, we got three books in total. While trying to pay, the owner asked my husband "So, where are you visiting from?". ((Pretty assumptive, as we only live slightly north of Calais)) They were apparently "new", and while I was at the door just waiting to leave, I thought I heard the total wrong. Turned out she charged us full list price for the books. $37 dollars for 3 books. I left feeling totally scammed, because I know, and when I got home I checked Amazon, we could of gotten those same books, used for less than $4 in total, and new, less than $15 in total. I'm all for shopping local, but I will never go here again. Not a single store charges the full list price anymore, and the owner is really condescending. If you step foot in this store, be prepared to pretend you know nothing about books, authors, or how to use Amazon.

But this place was just downright filthy and cluttered and it gave me the creeps. The lady who was there the day I went in was totally inattentive and in the middle of our conversation, she answered her phone and started a personal phone call. Piles of papers laying around and the books that were categorized were not organized to make it easy to read the spines, with one going one way and the other one going the other way. I love the concept old cluttered book stores and hope to own my own some day, but his place is a disgrace.

Jim's Books has been there at 8 Elm Street since he bought my childhood home from us after my Dad's…read morepassing. 'Charlie's Barn' was there for YEARS full of books before we were lucky enough for Jim to buy it and continue it's stewardship, the posts that used to hold the 'Chalie's Barn' sign are still there in the corner of the barn that was so much part of my childhood from the 60's. This summer, I took my grandchildren up to Machias and we stopped in to see Jim and the book barn. Indeed, just as crowdeed with interesting volumes as when my Dad had it. Jim was gracious enough to allow me to show my Grand daughters the old Franklin stove I used lug wood for, the unheated bedroom I slept in for 17 years, the kitchen, my Dad's den,.... what a trip down memory lane.
