It's amazing that Raye's makes their mustards RIGHT THERE, in Eastport--and not only that, the same family has done so for over 100 years. Everything is handcrafted with a stone-ground mustard mill and made in small batches. If you're a mustard aficionado you'll find everything from plain yellow mustards to various kinds of stone-ground; mustards made with beer, and others with wine; spicy mustards, sweet mustards, peppery mustards; seasonal blends including things like (of course) Maine blueberries and cranberries. What's great is that you can buy regular-sized jars and also little ones, and there are various sets and gift baskets to choose from too. And of course, you can sample anything you want! The staff are all super friendly and knowledgeable, and just ask for a cracker or pretzel with whatever you want to try, and they'll oblige. Cute mustard-forward gift store in tiny Eastport, Maine. Stopped here on a cruise recently and enjoyed walking the neighborhood. I had Raye's noted on my wishlist as a must- see and it was worth the stop. Raye's has more than every single flavor of mustard you've already heard of- savory and sweet and every flavor in between is here in their store. Also chocolate, kitschy doodads, fun little souvenirs are all to be found here. But the real reason to be in the shop is the mustard and once your impulse purchases are home and used up, you aren't empty as you can order your favorites online. The staff is very accommodating, allowing a determined fellow shopper to taste test multiple flavors (like the boss mustard sommelier she obviously imagined herself to be!) before gently reaching around her to keep the line of the rest of us moving along! Great mustard, no question. And I agree that the prices are high, but it's a tourist shop. My main beef is that the mustard mill is closed to visitors due to its decrepit condition... awaiting renovation, the sign says. I asked at the downtown store, and they said maybe 2 more years as they're trying to get grant funding. This is the funny part. Kevin Raye, of the owning family, is a well known Maine Republican politician... was once state Senate president and once ran for governor. Any irony here that a Republican business owner wants free money to fund capital improvements on a business they've let go to hell? Says a lot about the hypocrisy now found in that party. This is a truly "Down East" business. A small business, but one with character, a history and flair. The tour is free, the pretzels are not unique but the mustard is really amazing. There are so many varieties of mustard they are hard to keep straight. You can sample many of them. We were permitted to see how they century old manufacturing process continues just as it was originally intended and that this family business has a personality all it's own. If you look at this relatively small building, it is hard to imagine that this is the home of a major gourmet mustard producer. I was surprised to learn that this small factory located in the Eastern most city in the US has been running nonstop since 1903. I was even more surprised to learn that Raye's Down East Schooner mustard has earned top honors in the Classic American Yellow Mustard category, a gold medal in the 2012 Worldwide Mustard Competition. If you visit Down East Maine, perhaps you think of Machias, Cutler, Lubec or Campobello Island (Canada - bring a passport). The small town of Eastport, is a real gem. A fun place to visit and learn about the history of stone ground mustard. The mill is small but impressive when you learn about how much mustard they produce and the different local businesses they partner with and supply to. The ladies in the front are truly amazing! Not only great customer service but you can tell everyone there is passionate and invested in what they do. We sampled so many mustards (along with our daughter who kept "sampling" one in particular, different spoons each time haha) and have been happy to Raye's Mustards back at home with us in California. We bought a bunch of small ones as gifts and everyone who has received one was excited to hear the story and try their mustard. Keep up the great work out there! So I saw their ads in every Down East publication. Every. Single. One. And I thought, 'This can't be good. They advertise too much.' But we were in Eastport and had time to kill. And my mother collects mustard - she's got 17 different mustards in the refrigerator on last count. So against better judgment I stopped the car and went in. How wrong I was. Raye's has the last stone-ground mustard factory in the US. Imagine giant grindstones, the kind used for Mexican chocolate or old fashioned grain mills, spinning and forcing hundreds of pounds of mustard down a line that hasn't changed all that much in the last 100 years. Production is a thing of beauty, and the mustards are, actually, quite remarkable. I make mustard at home, and the mustard at Raye's not only blew me away, but taught me how to make better mustard. There's a 'tour' you must take if you stop in - tasting the mustard is great (they have nearly 2 dozen available to taste), but the viewing of the grindstones and the vats coupled with the explanation of the process makes the visit worthwhile. You'll learn that 4 generations of Rayes have kept the mustard mill going, first for use in sauces in canned herring, and that after the collapse of the herring fishery in Maine in the 1960s, they re-jiggered their business to meet the needs of retail customers and restaurants. Prices aren't unreasonable - when we were there, we bought 3 large jars for $9.00, each delicious in its own unique way. I can't wait to get home and open up my jar of Raye's Down East Schooner, one of the best American-style yellow mustards I've ever tasted. Oh man. read more

Besides the standards, you'll find about 30 or so different options that include everything from basic mustards with mix-ins to unique styles with a cranberry base. One is provided a taste sample at their little store on the main road to Eastport. This place is so cool! The owner is really nice, and she gave us a tour of their amazing traditional factory works. Everyone there was as sweet as can be, and the mustard was an absolute revelation. I like mustard, but I've never experienced actual mustard CRAVINGS until trying Raye's. We bought 2 gallons to take home to my uncle and aunt at their request, but I'm afraid they won't get the two full gallons, because we couldn't stop eating it! NOM. I bought some of the brown ginger flavor to bring home - I'm betting it'll turn my mustard-hating husband into a convert. Absolutely stop here when you're in Eastport. We are long time fans of Ray's mustard and were excited to see the reviews of the store and tour. We arrived mid afternoon on a weekday in September and although 5 people were in various parts of the store, not a single one greeted us or acknowledged we were there. We had no offers of a tour either. We did help ourselves to taste some new items and bought over 10 jars of mustard. At check out it seemed the clerk was being bothered that we were buying product. I would suggest management at this company train their staff on how to work retail customers. No every time I eat my many jars of mustard I will remember the sour experience we had while visiting Eastport. read more

I've not been to Raye's business, but I buy their products online because they are so delicious. Raye's sweet and spicy mustard is to die for! We order 8-10 jars at a time and would not be without it. There is nothing like it. We got hooked when my husband bought it at specialty store. I use nothing but Ray's Mustard. Our favorite is JAMESON TAVERN. We like it on ham on our plates at serving time. Just love a combo of honey, Jameson tavern and a little of Sweet and Spicy mixed together and served on heated Tyson frozen breast of chicken. It is so flavorful. Top Dog and Hot & Spicy are so good on burgers and hot dogs. These four are our favorites and my family highly recommends them. There are no other brands of mustards that compare to Ray's. read more

I need to preface this review by saying the mustard is really awesome, however, the service lacks. Our first trip to Rayes was a positive experience with the staff being friendly, warm, and professional. On our next venture out, and we brought friends that were visiting and I was so embarrassed. I had been raving about the mustard and the service. When we arrived we were not warmly greeted as on the first visit and the woman sat behind the counter the entire time. She was rather crass in her interactions with customers and to be blunt, downright rude. She treated us as if we were an inconvenience. Our guests were mortified as were we. No friendly service that day and honestly we should have gone to downtown Eastport to a little consignment shop run by a retired teacher to buy our Rayes....... the service was excellent and the prices cheaper. read more
