The employees I feel so little things for the individuals they serve to make sure they are treated with dignity and respect. Joy is the head nurse and she also does a great job. It is about team building and making sure new ideas are brought up to make sure residents are loved and cared for. I am so glad my mother in law care coordinator recommend to check out Gracewood when I was told there might be an open bed. They are very much about team approach.

The staff is like a family who are looking out and always interested but also give mom respect and privacy. She has had a variety of ups and downs and everyone including the house manager, the nurse and the staff all are honest and kind with me to keep me informed and connected even when I can't be with Mom as much as I wish. All the staff seem to really like the residents and visit and chit chat when they can. I am so appreciative that I am never "nickel and dimed" for all the little things like someone helping Mom to get dressed sometimes or doing a quick coat of paint on her nails. The building smells good and is decorated for seasons and holidays. It is relatively small which we all like so that Mom can stay active and have some freedom even though her dementia is significant. Her geriatrician visited and made a house call and was very impressed at how well rooms and overall layout were designed to accommodate the needs of elderly and ability to integrate different levels of cognitive and physical abilities together. Check it out!

There is also a much older, but historic, building known as Carondelet Center. The Village is a wonderful residential facility for older folks and is not necessarily a nursing home but there are nursing facilities. Explaining this is by offering different levels of housing from no care needed apartments, memory care and assisted living. Amazingly good food in the terrace main dining room. Decorated like a high level restaurant the food is top notch. You can't walk in off the street and dine but need to be the guest of a resident. There are other dining options for residents as well. There are daily activities including a pool, gym, classes on just about everything artistic and holistic, a library, music shows, movies. Visiting a resident I found it very quiet. There is a long waiting list, so long they even have listing closed for now as the wait is in years not months.

When I was moving my mom's belongings out of her room, I discovered her room had a rodent infestation of enormous proportions. There was a solid sheet of droppings under the cushions of her couch. Most of the interior fabric was eaten away. There were droppings inside my mom's bed frame and along her headboard. The shelf of mom's closet was blanketed with droppings. The infestation created a serious health risk to my mom as well as the other residents. The Hantavirus is contracted through breathing air contaminated with rodent dropping. And it can be fatal. A few weeks after my mom had left, I received a letter from Marvella, informing me they would not be refunding my mom's damage deposit because they needed to replace the carpet in her room. Yes, there was a blood stain on the carpet from when my mom fell and hit her head. After realizing they were never going to clean up the pool of blood, I tried to wash it out of the carpet, but it did leave a stain. I find it ironic that Marvella had my mom living in the midst of a rodent infestation (including droppings in the carpet) but they chose to further punish my mom by keeping her damage deposit. She didn't tear the place up by hosting nightly keggars in her room. She's a 91 year old woman with advanced dementia who fell and hit her head. Does that sound like treatment she should receive from a nonprofit, Christian organization run by Presbyterian Homes?

From the very beginning, this facility has shown a consistent pattern of neglect. When my mother…read morewas moved into Memory Care, everything became significantly worse. She has lived in a constant state of urine and feces. Her room smells so bad that even after I personally cleaned, did her laundry, and repeatedly complained, nothing changed. No one helped--not staff, not supervisors, not management. It feels like everyone is protecting each other instead of protecting the residents. My mother has asthma, and even the strong ammonia odor did not seem to phase anyone. Staff continued to insist this level of filth "wouldn't make her sick." The reality is that she was left in unsanitary, unsafe conditions day after day. When my mother first moved into Memory Care, a manager named Stormmie told me she had set up my mother's unit. That was not true. I have the photos. The room was never set up properly. Because of her confusion, my mother slept in a wooden chair for days, thinking it was her bed. She began losing control of her bladder and bowels, and I have personally had her hand me feces with her bare hands because no one was caring for her. The most alarming incident happened on November 6, 2025. A strange man was found inside my mother's locked room in the secure Memory Care unit. To this day, no one has explained how he entered the building, the locked memory care wing, and her private room--completely unnoticed. Considering the severe understaffing and the frequent inattentiveness of staff (many of whom are often on their phones or even asleep), it is unfortunately believable that this occurred without anyone intervening. EMS was called and transported my mother to United Hospital. A sexual assault kit was performed. EMS also reported her living conditions to Adult Protective Services. Despite all of this, the hospital discharged her back to the same unsafe environment later that day. When she returned, staff--reportedly under the direction of Stormmie--had completely cleared out her room. It looked like she was being moved out. Every single item was gone: clothing, bedding, shoes, glasses--everything. Furniture was turned to the walls, drawers emptied, lamps shoved into the closet. She didn't even have a pillow or sheets. When I asked staff for bedding, I was told, "Everyone has one, but we don't have any more. We'll try to find one tomorrow." I had to purchase pillows, bedding, and shoes myself just so she could sleep comfortably. Treating an Alzheimer's patient this way is cruel, retaliatory, and completely unacceptable. Since then, every time I return, the unit smells terrible. My mother is not changed regularly. Her bedding is soaked in urine. When I asked for clean sheets, three staff members confronted me as if I was the problem. One woman in all black began yelling that they "can't help my mother because she bites and kicks." Another told me it was my responsibility to provide bedding--despite the fact that I already bought it, and it mysteriously disappears. A third walked toward the closet to get a sheet, then turned around and yelled, "You ain't going to disrespect me. I'm not getting you anything." All because I asked for my mother--who has Alzheimer's--to have clean bedding. How is an elderly woman living in urine not disrespectful? How is asking for basic care "disrespectful"? Their reaction said everything. Even my mother's friend visited and was appalled. My original review was taken down. So I am reposting. Because people deserve to know. Tell me how a man breaks into a locked memory care unit. Tell me why my mother's room was emptied while she was in the hospital. Tell me why staff retaliated when I asked for clean bedding. And tell me why the facility deleted my review instead of fixing the problems. Families should not have to fight this hard just to make sure their loved one is clean, safe, and treated with human decency.
