I had been craving my staple salmon skin and unagi handrolls pretty much my entire time in NZ and I finally got them when I came to Hikari, with a little menu modification of course! Our server was amazing, she needs to be awarded employee of the year because she was so accommodating, understanding and NON JUDGMENTAL! I got the salmon sashimi (large) which was out of this world, the salmon just tastes so fresh over here, and then I asked for my special salmon skin handrolls with no rice and after asking the chef she reported that it's 100% doable! Of course when I ordered them- yes I ordered 6- there was only ONE THICK PIECE of salmon skin in each roll, but still very very tasty... I just have to realize the portion sizes are ALWAYS bigger in the states- ;) Of course when done, I wasn't quite satisfied yet, have I mentioned I could seriously win a fish eating contest? Thus I ordered the Unagi that is typically served over rice, over salad greens instead.... And the portion size was EXTREMELY GENEROUS!!! I fell in love and wished I could just jump into the salad bowl and stay there forever! I wasn't the only one dining though, my friend ordered the beef tataki, the chicken karage, the Pork Goyza and the soft shell crab and I didn't hear a peep from her, meaning everything was extraordinarily delicious! No complaints, worth every penny!! If I could, I'd go back for breakfast!

This small and unassuming Japanese eatery on "restaurant row" turned out to be very impressive in its inviting style and top-notched food. The wall mural alone easily gets 5-stars! The layout is open-aired and typically Japanese sushi bar. The friendly staff was welcoming. We started with a shared 300 ml bottle of Otokoyama sake ($19.90), served cold. I ordered an entree of seaweed salad ($7); my partner ordered the seared beef tataki with yuzu ponzu sauce ($13). I was hoping for a seaweed salad that was different from the store-bought fluorescent green stuff; sadly, that's what showed up. That said, it was fresh tasting and plated prettily. The beef tataki, on the other hand, was flavorful and elegantly presented. For our main, we ordered the sushi & sashimi platter ($42). Amazingly fresh sashimi, and sushi rolls that were wonderfully flavorful! There was not an iota of fishiness in any bite. Clean and pure. Definitely one of the absolute best sashimi and sushi meals I've ever eaten! I'm taking it down a notch due to the unimaginative seaweed salad, as well as the leisurely service pace. That said, we shall definitely return to Hikari upon our next visit to Queenstown....

They have fresh sashimi and delicious hand rolls. I ended up dining at Hikari twice during my stay.

We had not paid extra for the guaranteed window tables, but we're still one table away from the views. The food is buffet-style so you can really just pick and choose what you like. Start small and move your way through, but keep in mind that they are pretty strict to the 90 min time limit - we got a reservation for around 5:45pm and they were letting us know that the restaurant was closing (I think they probably do a full clean and changeover before the next seating) around 7/7:15. It was plenty of time to eat. I liked the salads (they had a really good salmon and apple cold salad), the green-lipped mussels and venison. Desserts were decent - although the person serving the ice cream gives a pretty small scoop of one of two options (cookies & cream, and a berry one). Post-dinner coffee was limited to instant coffee. Sister is a little bit more picky and didn't like the food as much, but I was able to find enough to eat. I think it's definitely worth a visit, but would consider options in future visit.
