I attended an event at the Hill Center for a cooking class. The space is open and well laid out for classes that need a kitchen. I didn't have a chance to see all of the property. I look forward to coming back in the warmer months for a concert on the lawn. Mary Ann was very helpful and explained many of the events that take place all year long. I will be back for future events and concerts offered to our community at no cost. What a great way to give back. Thank you Hill Center! read more

A great community center near Eastern Market. Beautiful garden and surrounding, and there is the Little Pearl restaurant right by it (seems to open at night only?). Staff are very friendly, and they have WiFi (different systems / passwords for different floors and different rooms). On the second floor, there's a stall in the ladies' room with a view (huge window). Not sure if that's a plus or a minus. read more

I have always wanted to attend a cooking class, but was reluctant to go alone. A fellow IG friend posted about her class and I was curious. I attended a cooking class with Chef Jennifer. It was the best time and felt like cooking with family. The class was diverse and lively. Chef Jennifer has a bubbly personality and made everything seem simple and easy to the challenged cook such as myself. We got a meal, wine, dessert, instruction, had a great time with everyone.... we were scheduling the next class before we finished our dinner! While I didn't go alone and enjoyed my company, I definitely could have as everyone was very friendly. I wish I had known about this place sooner. The building is nondescript and isn't quite as inviting from the outside. I stopped at The Little Pearl (the carriage house restaurant beside the center) for directions to the center. There seems to be a lot going on here that I'll definitely be back for. read more

Terrible signage- unclear where the entrance and exits are, confusing inside the building as well. Very hot, packed lecture hall with sullen young woman with long dirty-blond hair in charge who did not want to put on the A/C nor did she turn down the bright lights, as she should have to make the guests comfortable. The Hill Center is a great gathering place for Capitol Hill community events. They offer an array of events from cooking classes, to tastings, to live music and even have art exhibits on premise. A few months ago, Bayou Bakery opened on the premises and it upped their cool factor. Even if you don't swing by, make sure you snap a photo or two as you walk by. It's beautiful at night! read more

3.50 stars. This full-fledged activity center houses events at a variety of cost points covering a significant spread of interests. For example, this past week, I attended a complimentary free tasting sponsored by Maker's Mark (which unfortunately centered around a droll spokesman boring us to tears with useless meanderings about ph levels and precious little bourbon) and a Cambodian cooking class featuring the head chef from Toki Underground which doubled as a preview of his new restaurant (and from all indications, no one will be disappointed with the results -- the event was absolutely fantastic). For people who are interested in far more than food and drink (and despite my presence on this website, I'd like to include myself within that demographic), they have an assortment of activities including yoga classes, lectures from prominent community members, conversation classes (I guess I can brush up on my non-existent Portugese), and concerts. While I'm not necessarily enamored with the facility itself, the staff is friendly enough and the events are sometimes incredibly entertaining. As a result, I'll probably find myself here with a bit more frequency. read more

Attended a cooking class after seeing Kia's posts here and on Instagram. I attended Chef Jennifer Jones' brunch cooking class and was greeted by quite a few repeat attendees. Instruction was laid-back/informal but thoroughly engaging. Jennifer is extremely knowledgeable and personable. I highly recommend taking any one of her classes. You won't be disappointed! read more

This place is lovely! I live less than a mile away and had never been to it or heard about it, until my boyfriend and I took a sushi class from iWish, at this location. We got there early, and the flowers were really beginning to bloom, so we walked around outside and enjoyed the wisteria and perfectly cut grass instead of looking at the artwork inside, but we also took a look at the model of the Hein project inside. The demonstration kitchen was great -- easy to see things and move around and get things done. Bright for being in a "basement" (there were some windows!). The staff was incredibly friendly and hospitable -- they seem to really take ownership of the place. This venue is beautiful, and has so much potential! I hope I get to visit it for other purposes soon. read more

Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital is an excelllent new venue for classes, events and activities on Capitol Hill. This facility is beautiful! It is convenient to all forms of public transportation, and walking distance to all tourist attractions in the area. There is rental space available including beautifully equipped kitchens. A very brief list of programs and activities includes Art Galleries; Performances for children and teens, and Family activities; Classes in Computers and Technology for adults; Lectures, demonstrations and classes on Cooking, Food and Gardening; groups to meet with for your Hobbies, Crafts, and Games. you can take classes in Languages and Humanities. You can go to Lectures and Conversations about politics and other topics; and they have Mindful Motion and Health classes and activities such as Modern Dance and Yoga. Hosting a small conference? Getting married? If you are looking for a place to hold a small event (i.e., reception under 200 guests), check it out. The website is extensive and very user-friendly. You will find there, more than enough information to answer your questions. I recommend that you take a tour of the facility very soon. You can rent a classroom or hall for your event, you can host your event there. Street parking is the only thing available currently, but hopefull that will improve very soon. read more

Among the many benefits and activities offered at the Hill Center are the Bill Press interviews. However, the ticketing process, particularly for the more sought after guests, appears to be less than transparent. Instead of a mystery surrounding when the tickets are released, the staff should identify a specific date in a cycle for their release. read more

Classes here are excellent. Cooking with a renowned chef, french with experienced instructors, etc. I stop by just to check out the rotating art exhibits by local talents. Plus the music events draw great performers and diverse audiences. It is so much more than a community center. read more

The remodel of this old Civil War era hospital is totally awesome and a great addition to the Capitol Hill nieghborhood. At night, they have landscaping lighing on and really makes it shine. Perfect place for a reception, fundraiser, or cooking class. read more

We just got married here and I cannot thank the staff at the Hill Center (especially Macky) enough. They really pulled through and made sure that our day was perfect. We had the entire 2nd floor of the venue for our wedding which was a perfect location for our ceremony. Then the staff helped to flip the room for our cocktail hour and dinner-- and even stayed around until the end to make sure that things were moved out and safely put away. We took photos outside and people enjoyed the beautiful gardens during our cocktail hour. We stored everything in a room for pickup the day before and after our wedding. This was a godsend because I can't imagine loading in and out on the same day as other venues do. The staff here goes above and beyond to make sure that everything is great for the event and I cannot recommend them highly enough! read more

Held a small day-long meeting for 50 people at the Hill Center and it was WONDERFUL! They offer competitive prices and the space is really nice and beautiful. Plus it's a great location within walking distance of Barracks Row. They were very nice and hospital and I worked with their Events Manager Mack Daily who was very kind. She even went above and beyond to help make copies of a document we needed in the middle of the meeting. I would definitely recommend holding an event here. read more

We had our wedding party/reception at the Hill Center in April 2018 and can't say enough good things about it. Lisa is so easy to work with. Our guests couldn't stop raving about how neat the space is, especially the artwork on the walls. We rented the entire second level for about 120 guests and it was a perfect size. The Hill Center staff that helped out at our event were superb. We can't say enough good things about this space and highly recommend it. read more

3.5 stars.. We pass this all the time on the way to and from Eastern Market and always wondered what it is?? The grounds are gorgeous. With the combo of a beautiful Sunday and recent opening of the Bayou Bakery we thought it would be a great opportunity to stop on by. But first we were thoroughly confused about what this place is??? We checked online and it didn't seem obviously that we could drop in any time and check it out. After seeing "open for the public" we walked through the entrance and luckily, the sweetest front desk personnel told us the whole place is open, there are gallery exhibits on every floor and just explore. Being sunday, there was a church service on the second floor and some type of event on the 3rd. however the place is FILLED with rooms and hallways that are deserted minus some amazing art work. Each artwork area included a plaque on DC history and prominent figures--which made the whole experience educational and fun. I suggest stopping by here for a small dose of history and a little break from the Eastern Market bustle. read more
