Communication with this builder is nonexistent. Once the paperwork was signed and the selections were made, we didn't hear anything from them until the following year and that was after, I try contacted them. It took this builder a year and half from start to finish. Workmanship is mediocre at best. When I started to walk through weekly some of the problems that I noticed was holes in the drywall. Personally, thinking in the future it will crack and need repair. I would not recommend this builder. read more

Hillcrest is a terrible company. Oyvind is completely untrustworthy and they will look to cut corners and screw you every chance they get. When we moved into our house in November five years ago, we started noticing draftiness from the windows and extreme icing over them. We were told that was just new house moisture. The next year, one of our neighbors was having a window replaced and noticed that the windows were not insulated properly. We were still under warranty so we called and demanded that they check the window insulation and found out none of our windows were insulated. To their credit, they fixed the problem, but we had to find out from the neighbors about it, they weren't going to tell us themselves. Several months after building, we started noticing moisture around the door to the garage. It was bad enough that the power kept getting tripped on garage door opener and outlets. We called to have it fixed as we were still under warranty. We were told that everything was fixed. A few years later, we started getting mold around the door. We called to have a restoration company take care of it costing several thousand dollars. One of the people doing the repairs said unprompted, "I'll bet it's Hillcrest. I heard they build sh*tty houses". A few months later, we had our kitchen sink fall in while doing dishes. We called up a cabinet contractor to get a quote to fix. He assumed it must be a cast iron sink or something really heavy. When we told him it was stainless steel, he was shocked. 5 years after building our house, Hillcrest started building a house next door. After having our lawn installed for several years, Hillcrest sent us a letter telling us that they needed to do grading work at the back of our property. They did not ask us for permission, they sent notice. A couple weeks later, we had a bulldozer driving through the back of our property. The original grading plan called for a one foot swale. They dug a 5 foot ditch. This was because the yard had been graded the wrong direction. The entire back yard would need to be regraded in order to correct the problem which would mean multiple years of weeding and watering to get it back to how it was. We tried for months to contact them to work something out. They had surveyors come out to take the measurements and insisted everything was done according to the plan. When we asked to see the survey results, they wouldn't share them. We filed an E&O claim with their insurance company and they've given false information about the sub contractor that did the work and the agreements they had in place with them. Believe it or not, most of our neighbors that we've talked to have had much worse experiences with Hillcrest. It's our belief that our project manager held it together as best he could and without him, it would have been the type of disaster we've heard from many others. My regret is I didn't read other reviews and Better Business Bureau reviews before buying a house from Hillcrest Builders. They do NOT answer phone calls, do NOT answer emails, make lots of promises to fix problems, but never follow through. Painting of door frames was not completed until I made several requests. Disposal is still broken. Dishwasher was not working; Mike came out to fix it and ran it without removing the instructions and warranty paperwork from inside it! Light fixture and exhaust fan over the shower were dangling from the ceiling. Siding on the outside is still bowing out. Gaping spaces around discharge chutes to where mice and pests can enter the basement. Crack in the foundation wall where it's obvious water leaked in. And when I asked Mike T. when the property would be graded and the lawn planted, he said he's got some customers who've been waiting over a year for their lawns. To make matters worse, the property has concrete from the driveway pouring in huge mounds where the lawn should be, and the weeds are over 3 feet tall. The City has informed me that if the weeds are not cut down, I am liable for the fine under the weed ordinance! My garage was filled with construction debris, long boards, moulding, empty and full paint cans. Again, Mike told me they leave the paint in case the owner needs to touch up the walls. Except the paint was NOT the color I have in my house. To his credit Mike did haul away the boards and junk. I would advise against anyone ever working with Hillcrest Builders. Long story short, we decided to buy a spec home because there were few homes for sale in the area. There were many false promises and the communication was completely lacking the whole way. We missed our closing date which was a huge problem because we rushed to move out of the house we sold and had to be pay the bank a fee to extend our loan past the lock-in period. We have small children, and not knowing where you'll be living is difficult to say the least. Basically you are told whatever it is to bait you in and sign the purchase agreement. After that, you're second fiddle. The house is a good price but you get what you pay for. Lots of headaches, stress, lack of communication, false promises, repairs that aren't fixed in a timely matter or fixed at all, a lawn that will not be finished until who knows when. Heck our grading was completely unacceptable and unsafe until we got our grass, almost a year later. Construction debris was all over the place until months after move in, even after many complaints. Our weeds got to waste height in many areas before they were sprayed and chopped. We were told we'd have a lawn last fall, but it took almost a year to get one. I think Hillcrest takes in way too many projects to finish any of them in a timely matter. My suggestion, scope out the neighborhood and check out different builders before settling on this one. Maybe some neighborhoods have fantastic project managers, with good communication and prioritization skills, but we haven't experienced that. read more
