Our first time to Hilltop Retreat. We were visiting the area and a friend suggested the restaurant. They are open on Friday and Saturday night and Sunday morning. It was Saturday evening and the hostess who greeted us was very friendly. The restaurant was busy and she found us a table on the outside enclosed space. We waited a few minutes and a server greeted us and said they were very busy so she would take our drink orders before our regular server would become available. We waited a little longer and our new server Melody brought the drinks and apologized for the wait. Melody was very nice and professional. She checked on us throughout the evening. I ordered the chicken Parmesan. My husband ordered coconut shrimp with a baked potato and our friend ordered the walleye. We each ordered the cabbage soup with the dinner. The chicken parm was delivered on a huge plate of pasta with red sauce. Unfortunately neither was flavorful and there was just way too much pasta. The chicken had a small amount of white sauce on top. The red sauce was not seasoned at all. My husband said the coconut shrimp was fine. The baked potato arrived after he finished the shrimp so that was disappointing. Our friend said the walleye was okay. The cabbage soup was good but needed seasoning. While the staff is friendly and attentive, the food is just not great, at least the dishes we ordered. read more

Made reservations after my boss suggested they were necessary (tiny town, lack of choices). Showed up and our "reserved" table was where the kitchen and bar met; very loud and hectic. LOTS of empty tables when we arrived at 4:45 p.m., but we still got sat in an undesirable area. App of cheese curds. Meals were Hilltop Melt, country style pork ribs and king prime rib. The cheapest meal was happiest with their food: Hilltop Melt with Sweet Potato fries. My mother found that the pork ribs were dry and bland (and I did try them and they were indeed bland and the only flavor came from the BBQ sauce). Don't brag that your boneless, country style pork ribs are cooked for 18 hours, when the result is dry and bland. My king prime rib was served later so the hashbrowns could cook, according to the waitress, yet the hashbrowns that my mom and I both had were okay on the outer edges, but not warm/cooked on the inside. The prime rib had decent flavor, but it was tough and required a lot of sawing through with a steak knife. The best part of the visit was our waitress Hannah; food was mediocre. read more

Arrived right on time for a 6:30 reservation. Waited a few minutes to be seated by a hostess who looked like she wanted to be anywhere else. Never cracked a smile. Server brought water and menus. When she returned several minutes later we ordered drinks and our meals. Waited OVER AN HOUR for our food! Mine came without fries. "They'll only be a few minutes more." Sever asked if we wanted two more iced teas "since you've been waiting so long ". When bill arrived were were charged almost $50 for two fish fry dinners ($14.99 each) When we asked about total we were told iced tea was $3.99 each, so hubby and I spent $16 for nonalcoholic drinks! No free refills here! Even if that's their policy, you'd think they'd spring for a couple iced teas to compensate us for the wait. Yes, it was a Friday night in NW Wisconsin, but they had plenty of servers. The food was fine. Wonder what it will be like when the summer tourist rush arrives. Needless to say, it won't matter to us. We will not be returning. UPDATE : Contacted by owner. Very apologetic. Working hard to make this right. Obviously our experience is not the norm. Hilltop Retreat is a neat place. Perfect for date night, large groups, and kid-friendly too. There is a mini arcade with seating by it for families. As you walk into the main restaurant, there is a large stone fireplace. We had the Canadian walleye. It was excellent. The dinner came with our choice of soup or salad. Everything was good. The service was fast and friendly. We will be back! read more

Prime rib was awesome, but when we asked for horseradish to go along with our prime rib, they seemed confused, and brought out horseradish in squeezable Hienz squeezable packages . The appetizer of fried mushrooms was delicious.!! read more

Our first time here. Enjoyed the decor and atmosphere (kid friendly but with upscale restaurant feel). Wife and me arrived without reservation but a spot was made for us. Enjoyed the prime rib and special drink "bourbon bomb". Will come back with kids but will make reservation. read more

My wife and I went in there this weekend to check it out as we heard there was new ownership and a new menu. We were greeted with a big smile from the bartender and the owner (Justin). They made great cocktails and the wine was great too. Food was also some of the best we have had. read more

Cheers to the Hilltop crew. Other two reviews over 2 years old. New owner and team are doing a great job. Great salad bar with lots of choices and fresh veggies. Wild rice soup was spot on and not too salty with a great balance of rice to chicken Had the chicken caprese dinner. Chicken was tender and great flavor atop of great garlic mash. Finished the meal with a brandy alexander. All the staff was friendly and outgoing. Will be back. Worth the drive. read more
