It's tough to register, though, as spaces are swooped up VERY quickly, and this year they capped families at two weeks for the summer.

After college I returned to visit Williston and met with the then Headmaster [my old one too] and I was able to fill a position on the faculty for a semester and then in the Summer School. This experience was a springboard to my Boston College Law school education, and clearly a positive element in my career and life to date. This June [2025] will be my 60th Reunion. I will go with gratitude and anticipation of seeing my friends from Williston. As our Class Agent for decades [a ceremonial chore, I assure you], I am in constant communication with guys I was in school at Williston with. We may be "old", but we are thankful for our education at Williston more than 60 years ago, and happy for the life-long friends we made.

My family has not had a good experience at Williston. The heads of the school are not approachable. They look like they are always in a bad mood or are mad at students. They are always inconsistent when it comes to who is disciplined, and who isn't. One kid could break a school rule and get in sent to the dean, and then another kid could do the same exact thing and never have to visit the dean. The energy behind the scenes at Williston is negative, most kids who go there do not like Williston but appreciate that their parents are spending the money to send them to a private school. It seems more like a public school with rich (not wealthy) people in it, than a private school---kind of shabby and gawdy, not traditional new england private school, like they were desperate for students and let in a bunch of thugs who maybe can throw a ball well or who own Mercedes and BMWs but live in a cul de sac in a pre-fab pop-up McMiniMansion and visit the mall weekly. I preferred the private schools I visited on the coast, much classier that Williston.

My oldest followed 2 generations and went to that school as well but my middle son marches to the beat of a different drum. So I was not too surprised when he applied to Hampshire College. My son was very carrot and stick orientated so very focused on grades and he was accepted to 9 of the 10 schools he applied for ... RPI being one of his top two choices with Hampshire being the other. I was intrigued how he would deal with a evaluation based classes. He has adjusted pretty well. So far I am thrilled with his experience and he seems to be fitting right in.

I attended Hampshire from Fall 94-98. Bridging the years where Hampshire went from the grads who…read moretook 10 years to get a diploma (LOTS of "student sabbaticals" which weren't allowed after some school changes) and the "new kids" who fell under stricter guidelines. Pre-2000, a lot of Hampshire students were left with a "sink or swim" style of education. The faculty were amazing (Marion was excellent with Tai Chi and other classes and the outdoor programs were excellent, David Kerr and others were supportive and definitely helped me stay on track. Being one of a small number of financial aid students, the feeling at the beginning of each year was incredibly stressful (if you couldn't prove you had the funds, sometimes making the difference up in cash before matriculation, you couldn't start the school year). Financial stresses aside, it was one of the best times of my life. Hampshire College gave me insights into the way I work and strengthened my belief in self worth and my ability to achieve whatever I set myself up to do. Hampshire is a direct reason why I was able to take more risks after college, pay off a tremendous amount of debt in just a few years (yeah business consulting!) and achieve a lot of the successes I have now. I learned the undergrad education wasn't so much about what I studied, but how I set goals, researched, learned, and achieved whatever I set out to do. Those lessons have given me more than any piece of lambskin was worth. Yes - there were Hipsters at Hamp before Hipsters were a "thing" and there will continue to be the trust-fund babies who opt to float through four years of f-ing around and not really doing anything but spend money and get high. There are more, way more, motivated students who are pushing themselves to be more than what most colleges and universities expect. I'd argue there are more alumni from Hampshire (graduates or drop outs) who've succeeded because they were real examples of what a Hampshire student is - motivated, dedicated, self-assertive, risk-taking, and willing to fail several times to achieve success at whatever they're doing than there are from other more "normal" schools. I loved Hampshire and while it still definitely needs to improve its alumni relations, it's a constant work in progress and it's great to see awesome kids coming and going from there still...

I got 4 detentions for no reason. The first, I called someone a mouse. They said they were okay…read morewith it. But one day, I got sent to the office, and they said that I get a detention because he was too scared. THATS HIS FAULT! NOT MINE! The second, I slapped someones butt as a joke. They took it too seriously, like literally. They called me down to the office again, and said he felt uncomfortable. I get he felt uncomfortable, but instead of trying to solve the problem and say, "hey, I felt uncomfortable, please dont to that again", he told on me! It was only a joke. The third/fourth, I accidentally gave someone food, but the assistant principal took it too seriously. AND GAVE ME 2 DETENTIONS! if you are looking to go to a school, dont come here unless you wanna get 10000000 detentions for something you didnt intend to do.

Pros: Michelle - She manages the business end and handles meals. She was incredibly helpful and always very pleasant. Dave - He's one of two instructors and most of what I got out of the course came from working with him one-on-one. He's super talented and all of my encounters with him were positive. I (along with most other people in the course) sought Dave out for any questions and help. The food - Michelle put together a great lunch every day. The skill set - I walked away from this week confident that I could handle basic layouts and build a structure using the skills I learned here (which is the whole point of the course). The safety - The instructors take safety very seriously and quickly react to any questionable behaviors. Cons: Class size - There were 26 people enrolled in the course including four "apprentices" which left two instructors who knew what they were doing to teach all of us. Organization - The first half day was spent sitting in a classroom watching minimally helpful overhead sheets and the second half watching demos. It would have been very easy to integrate hands on exercises on scrap wood and mix this information in over time. Barn raising - Friday was dedicated to assembling the frame we built Tuesday through Thursday. There were too many hands for too little work. Dave said you need a max of fourteen people to raise a structure like the one we built. You had to actively fight to participate. The "apprentices" - Really two of the four were actually pretty good and cared about learning. The other two seemed to cause more problems than they fixed. Ultimately I learned a lot from Dave while I was here (and Brad, another instructor who was there for one day was also great). Will was pretty impatient and not particularly helpful. The mix of people who were taking the course was about 50% carpenters (some with timber framing experience and some without) and 50% from random backgrounds (some teachers, a cobbler, some IT folk, a student, etc). Everyone was able to keep up and a carpentry background really isn't necessary. The group instruction wasn't that helpful but if you take the time to seek out knowledgable staff (or peers who have already done a piece you're working on) you can learn a lot here. It's really what you make of it. If you're looking to get a basic crash course in timber framing this is a good place to get it (despite class size and some other kinks). You can make as many mistakes as you need to (and should, this is a great way to learn) and someone will be able to show you how to correct it before you try this on your own.

For my daughter's sake, I've been waiting for classes to end before writing this. We had been with…read morethe studio for several years. Over that time we have seen many families pull their children out for one reason or another. We planned to move our daughter to another studio before this past season started, but she begged us to let her go back because she loved her other teachers, and her friends were there. About half way through this season she told us we needed to find another studio after this season because she couldn't take the tension and drama anymore. The studio was once a good fit for us, but no longer is.
