These guys didn't do any WORK for me, but what they did do was give me an honest opinion, and plenty of add-on information. I had some arborvitae with some droopy branches in my backyard. Jim called me and without having ever seen my property, diagnosed exactly what I had, and advised me against having anyone come out. He recommended taking my time and trimming the trees in the areas with issues and assured me they would grow back because that is what he would do. Other landscapers gave me quotes of $2000+ to do more work than what he would have taken on, and pretty much convinced me that it was the way to go. I've been working with Jim McSweeney and his team for more than 10 years now, and they've done all kinds of work with my trees and landscaping, and I've always been more than 100% happy with him and all of his crew. I feel so lucky to have found him. He gives excellent advice, and when he's baffled by something, he's not afraid to say so. Most recently he and his team took out about a dozen dying spruces and two maples that had become dangerously weakened in their old age. Chipped a great deal of the wood into mulch for me, also did some pruning and put in 4 new rose bushes. Did all the work wonderfully and left the place totally spic and span. Both Jim and his team are always happy to answer all my questions, whether serious ones or just curiosity. And the big plantings of new bushes and ground cover that he did several years ago, on the side where the spruces have been dying, are looking wonderful and healthy - he gave us excellent instructions on how to care for them, and checked up on them a couple of times a year. He really cares. (And he also treats his crew really well, with good living wage, health insurance, etc -- which is undoubtedly why he has such a great crew.) read more

We called Jim McSweeney because he was recommended to us as a very good certified arborist. We had a very large dead tree that was a hazard to our home and we needed someone to examine it and help us with it. Jim gave me lots of good information, spoke with our town's conservation person and helped us get a permit to remove the tree. Jim and his crew did a great, skillful job in removing the tree and without doing any damage to any other trees or bushes or plants in that same area. They were incredibly professional, careful and focused on the work. They even used the wood chips from some of the branches to help with some of our other trees. Also, we had two huge trees that had fallen in the woods behind our home during the heavy winds last November. The trees were uprooted and left two giant holes in the ground. Jim and his crew very carefully cut each tree in exactly the right spot that allowed the root pod from the tree to right itself and fill it's own hole naturally, protecting the environment of our woods and making it safe for our family to walk back there. We've hired Hilltown Tree and Garden to work on the trees at our second home in Western Massachusetts on two occasions. We have a long row of very old and majestic sugar maples along most of our road frontage, and another equally noble and old specimen next to the pond in our back yard. We lost one maple during a hurricane seven or eight years ago when a heavy and very long bough couldn't handle the wind and broke, bringing part of the trunk down with it. That tree had to be brought down (by another firm, with whose work we were very happy.) We were determined not to lose any more of these grand maples, if we could help it, and finally decided to spend some money to preserve them. Jim worked with us to determine which trees we should focus on, where the weak points were on each tree, and what should be pruned, what should be thinned, and what should be cabled. He explained everything to us patiently and carefully, and together we developed a plan. His team of experts worked hard and steadily to do the work. When questions arose, Jim consulted with us before acting. Each individual workmen had a role to play and had the skills to do his job, but they also had an easy rapport with one another and worked as a team. Along the way, Jim took the time to point out work that needed to be done and identified those jobs we could do ourselves.He offered advice on how we should proceed (for example, strategies for how to handle wayward lilacs and forsythia bushes). We were thoroughly satisfied with both the work performed and the process of working with Jim and his crew. Recently, our insurance company threatened to cancel our insurance unless we removed all the branches overhanging our garage. We discovered the warning late and had to move quickly. A couple of tall ash trees had to be taken down, and many branches had to be trimmed. Jim fit us in to his schedule; the work was quickly, skillfully, and carefully done. His men reached what they could from the ground, climbed trees when that was necessary, and dispatched the job quickly, with no damage to anything. We have a lot of trees. Next time we need work done that we can't handle, Jim's coming back. read more

Hilltown Tree and Garden is the best! They just completed our large perennial garden and we couldn't be more thrilled with it. Jim had so many fabulous and creative ideas about how to transform our front yard and entryway area into something inviting and beautiful. Even though things still need to grow in, the transformation has been incredible and we've already had tons of people in the neighborhood complimenting the garden and asking us who installed it. This garden really is special - not your typical landscaping job. For me, the best part of working with Jim was being able to entirely put my trust in him with the decisions around the garden. It's immediately apparent from working with Jim how incredibly knowledgeable and thoughtful he is in his work. Jim discussed different plants with us and got a feel for what we liked and didn't like, and after that we gave him free reign to run with it and do his thing, which is exactly what I wanted to do but wouldn't have felt comfortable doing with any other landscaper. The final product has exceeded my expectations, which were quite high to begin with. Jim's prices are not low, but we feel that the final product was absolutely worth the price. We did less work than we would have been able to do with another company in order to stay within our budget, but the quality of what was completed was so good that there's no question that we made the right decision.
