At least double the price of what can be had by buying from an online pharmacy. But they have you by the short and curlies. You must have a prescription, to get a prescription you must see a vet and pay for their consultation. Once you have had the consultation you must then pay for the prescription. The prescription only covers one drug, so if like me you need two you must pay for two prescriptions. I still save nearly £1,000 per year by doing it this way, so you can see just how extortionate vet drug prices are in order to still save that amount of money.

I can't say enough good things about the vet who operates this business: Geoffrey Smith, MRCVS -but…read morelet me try! His business is small and run out of a house (that I assume is also his home). He is the only vet there and so you get his full and personal attention (he did take a brief vacation last year when he had a young lady take his place - and she was wonderful too!). Indeed you could imagine a British TV show about this man and his business. Oh wait a minute - that was done already back in the day (1978-1990): "All Creatures Great and Small" The surgery itself comprises a waiting area and his office/surgery. We LOVE the personal service that he gives, so does our beloved little guy "Ricky Martin" our 6 year old Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix born (and dumped roadside) in Houston, TX - thank goodness we found each other!! The occurrence that comes to mind is about 6 months ago when little Ricky (on an extended leash while walking with me) was attacked with no warning by a ferocious German Shepherd (Alsatian) which the owner was allowing to run free (forbidden in the UK) - yes I later found the address of the thoughtless owner, reported him to the police and now he has to keep the dangerous dog on a leash with a muzzle or he will go to prison. However, Ricky was bleeding and we got him immediately to the Doc who calmed him, shaved the area of the bite, studied and informed us that had the bite been 1/4 inch deeper or 1/4 inch to the left the carotid artery would have been severed and he would have bled out on the spot. He explained everything to us, advised why he was NOT going to use stitches, gave us painkillers for the little guy and antibiotics. Follow up a week later and all has been well since he pretty much fully recovered a month or so later. Poor little Ricky will not walk with me through those areas where he was attacked - his memory remains, as does ours of this wonderful, caring vet Two big thumbs up and one little paw up! Hall 20 is quite a walk from Birmingham International railway station but I knew where I was going to it wasn't so bad. Lots of lovely animals to look at great for kids to see pets they might not have pestered their parents for previously. It looses a star for being far to warm in the hall but I presume the building doors can't be opened in the same way that they can for regular events. Was glad to see lots of water available for the animals to try and correct this. Well worth a visit for an afternoon!

I love animals, but living in a one bed flat (and being almost constantly out), my lifestyle doesn't lend itself to keeping a pet at home. The National Pet Show was being held at the NEC in hall 20. If you've been to the National Exhibition Centre before you'll know it's a bit of a labyrinth. Hall 20 is right down the other end of the centre from the train station, so it's about a 10 - 15 minute walk from Birmingham International. Outside the show was a small desk where you could enter a competition to win lots of different prizes, however these were all orientated towards pet owners (free food, bed etc), so we gave this a miss. Once in, there was animals everywhere! Lots of cats, dogs, rabbits to the more unusual lizards, Degu's and chickens! We did a bit of a circle around the hall and checked out the ferret rescue, before making our way around lots of different pet related merchandise. We ended up seeing donkeys, ponies and alpacas before and getting to the dog shows. There must have been around 30+ different breeds of dog to stroke and admire. After this section was the cats! There wasn't as many different types of feline, but they were all totally gorgeous and very friendly. The owners of all of the animals were brilliant; answering questions and giving insights into the quirks of each breed. After the bigger pets came the "small furries". As a huge rat fan, I was pleased to see the "National Association Of Fancy Rat Owners" were in attendance, as well as a showing from guinea pigs, rabbits and degu's. As well as the furry side of pets, there was a lovely stand from the "National Chicken Rescue" where little chicks were happily chirping away and "Wierd'N'Wonderful" who had bought along a brilliant selection of lizards, scorpions and spiders to look at. I have to admit, it seems as though we missed the cheese, wine and other bits and pieces that have been mentioned in the reviews! We did catch some of the "rabbit show jumping" (Which was quite a sight) before calling it a day. I had a lovely hour and a half petting the animals and chatting to the owners, but this is definitely a show geared up towards small children and pet owners. Don't get me wrong, I would revisit; but if you're a pet person or have small kids - this is a must go!

I cannot praise Ashfield House vets highly enough!…read more I use them both for as a volunteer for a local animal welfare charity but also for my own pets. The staff are exceptional and all vocationally driven. From the reception staff to the nurses to the vets - animal welfare is clearly a driving force for them. This is not to say for your own animals care it isn't pricey (which vets isn't!) but I believe their costing to be fair and the quality of care is beyond doubt. As vet care is expensive one thing you can rest assured is they are a practice which fully explain the costs to you in advance and will not undertake unneccesary work for their own financial gain. For those with their animals insured they have members of staff specialised with helping you in your claim. The main site at Long Eaton has hospital status and they are able to carry our surgical work from the routine to highly specialist. Having brought them many trauma and abuse cases through my volunteer work I have been amazed by their expertise on several occassions which gives me greater confidence that should any of my own animals ever be in such a situation, they would be afforded the best possible treatment. Many of their vets sepcialise and if you speak to their knowledgable reception staff they will be able to recommend a vet should your pet need a specific area of care. Their specialist fields included oncology, orthopaedics, dermatology, optholomogy and much more. A visiting pet behavourial specialist also holds a clinic here. They run a number of clinics and clubs including the weight club and the puppy club which are well worth attending. They have a second branch in Spondon and a specialist feline clinic at Bramcote. Most importantly this vets will do all in their power to make you and your pet comfortable. This is especially important at times of stress after an accident or on losing a pet. There is a small car park for clients to the rear of the surgery.
